Translating conservative citizen outrage into local political activism is a worthy goal of the national tax day Tea Party movement and it is obvious that the local POLS did not wish to oblige the movement.

It was a controversial night for the Quincy City Council in its first meeting with newly elected members.

New members now split the council at seven Republicans and seven Democrats and it didn’t take long to put partisan politics in play when it came to allowing one Quincy man his turn to speak.

The council voted and refused conservative resident Steve McQueen, an organizer of Quincy’s April 4 Tea Party event, to voice his opinion about the city’s new proposed budget.

All seven Democrats in attendance voted against McQueen speaking, while all six Republicans in attendance voted in favor of him speaking. McQueen had formally filed a request to speak in front of the council.

“The vote is seven to six this evening so we will not have the speaker speak this evening,” Quincy mayor John Spring said.

Republican alderman Mike Rein was absent.  Had Rein been there and voted in favor to let McQueen speak, Spring, a Democrat, would have been forced to vote to break the tie. When asked what he would have voted, Spring simply said it was a decision he didn’t have to make.

“I don’t think they realize necessarily that the Constitution states that they govern at our consent.  Apparently they’ve forgotten that part,” McQueen said.

Voting against allowing McQueen to speak were Democrats Ben Bumbry, Virgil Goehl, Steve Duesterhaus, Dave Bauer, Raymond Vahlkamp, Jack Holtschlag and Richard Reis.

Voting to allow McQueen to speak were Republicans Kyle Moore, Paul Havermale, Michael Farha, Tony Sassen, Jennifer Lepper and Dan Brink.

McQueen said his issue with the budget invovles pay increases for department heads and non-union employees while increasing fees for residents.

“Passing a water-sewer increase that actually is a pay cut for people in Quincy in some pretty dire economic times,” McQueen said.

Farha said this was the first time in ten years he could recall something like this happening. Duesterhaus was quick to respond.

Flap is surprised, since local city councils bend over backwards to allow residents and VOTERS to speak.

Here is a response from the council members.

Steve Duesterhaus, an alderman for Ward 2, says timing is everything and that McQueen had three chances to speak prior to the council approving both the water and sewer increases and the new $31.2 million dollar budget last week.

“We had ample opportunity for people to comment on the issue Mr. McQueen wanted to discuss so not being timely I didn’t believe it was his right to have the floor,” Duesterhaus said. “That doesn’t prevent him from having his say in another forum or if he feels his information is of the utmost importance to the council he could easily put it in a letter and send it to us.”

Duesterhaus went on to say the council simply followed rules of order and did not have to allow McQueen to speak.

However. every Republican on the council voted in support of McQueen, including Jennifer Lepper.  She says every resident should have the right to address the council, regardless of the issue.

“I personally thought that he should have the ability to have the floor and tell us what’s on his mind,” Lepper said. “He is a citizen of Quincy and he does pay his taxes he should have to right to voice his opinion to us.”

Perhaps the Quincy folks should televise their meetings on the local cable television channel and keep a closer eye on what is happening in THEIR local government.

Obama Mocks National Tax Day Tea Parties

    So, says Kos.

Those of you who are watching certain news channels on which I’m not very popular, and you see folks waving tea bags around, let me just remind them that I am happy to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we’re going to stabilize Social Security — Claire and I are working dilligently to do a thorough audit of Federal spending — but let’s not play games and pretend that the reason is because of the Recovery Act.

No, the Tea Pary folks KNOW what you and the Democrat dominated Congress will do – RAISE taxes.

Ignore the protests at your own peril.

Tax Day Tea Parties and the Republican Party Establishment

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

    Political Cartoon from Ed Gamble

    Well, not so much.

    • Mitt Romney, a top contender for the 2012 nomination who has been cautious in his criticism of President Obama, will not attend a tea party, said his spokesman.
    • John Boehner, the House minority leader, will attend a tea party in Bakersfield, Calif., with Rep. Kevin McCarthy.
    • Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, is on official business overseas and won’t be participating.
    • Eric Cantor, the House minority whip, is in his Virginia congressional district with no public events today, said a spokesman.
    • Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who will likely consider a 2012 run, is out of town and not participating, according to a spokesperson.
    • Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, last year’s GOP VP nominee and a potential 2012 contender, won’t be attending any tea parties “that I’m aware of,” said a spokesperson.

The Tea Party movement is not about the GOP, in any case. But, the GOP better get the message.

National Tax Day Becomes Protest Day – Will Tea Parties Change American Politics?

    protest-day

And, the funny thing is that the Tea Party protests are not so much about TAXES but how the Obama Administration and the Congress are spending the tax money.

Today American taxpayers in more than 300 locations in all 50 states will hold rallies — dubbed “tea parties” — to protest higher taxes and out-of-control government spending. There is no political party behind these rallies, no grand right-wing conspiracy, not even a 501(c) group like MoveOn.org.

What’s most striking about the tea-party movement is that most of the organizers haven’t ever organized, or even participated, in a protest rally before. General disgust has drawn a lot of people off the sidelines and into the political arena, and they are already planning for political action after today.

Cincinnati organizer Mike Wilson, a novice organizer who drew 5,000 people to a rally on March 15, is now planning to create a political action committee and a permanent political organization to press for lower taxes and reduced spending. Tucson tea party organizer Robert Mayer told me that his organization will focus on city council elections in the fall as its next priority. And there’s lots of Internet chatter about ways of taking things further after today’s protests.

This influx of new energy and new talent is likely to inject new life into small-government politics around the nation. The mainstream Republican Party still seems limp and disorganized. This grassroots effort may revitalize it. Or the tea-party movement may lead to a new third party that may replace the GOP, just as the GOP replaced the fractured and hapless Whigs.

Michelle has more on the history of the Tea Party Movement.

So, will this movement survive past tax day?

Yes, fiscal conservatives have found the power of the internet and social networking genrerated grass roots organizing. The tax and spend mantra of the Tea Parties will united like minded individuals in a call to action that will translate into local political action and beyond.

    Stay tuned…….

Flap has not really pushed the Tax Day Tea Party movement here because there are references to it all over Twitter and other sites. But, when the FAR LEFT Journolist starts memes against the movement it gives me great pause.

And, so why the Tea Party protest?

    This pretty much explains it.

Chris, don’t tell me you believe that both political parties, Democrats and Republicans are “DUPLICITOUS” in the tax and spend game?

And, sticking American taxpayers with enormous debt that will require generations to retire?

But, the Obama strategy, and a transparent one at that, is to cause massive inflation and “stick” China and other foreign countries with the bill.

    What a plan……

In the meantime, the American Tea Party tax and spend protests continue.

Day By Day by Chris Muir

Yes, Chris, the Tea Parties are organizing and Flap will be attending one on April 15th here in Ventura County, California. Here is some info from the organizer’s Facebook Group:

A group of concerned citizens is organizing a Rally to be conducted at the Government Center in Ventura. The primary purpose of the Rally is to send a message to the State and Federal governments that we are deeply concerned about the level and direction of government spending. This group’s overall mission is to encourage public policy that promotes limited government, free markets, and individual liberty.

To get the word out about the Rally, the organizers will appear on talk radio programs, promote through many venues on the internet, make phone calls, send emails, and will post fliers throughout the area with all pertinent event information.

Attendees are being asked to bring a tea bag to the Rally to show their solidarity with the original tax revolt that was foundational to our nation. We intend to express our digust with the number of unnecessary spending programs that are being passed into law. The collected tea bags will be presented to government officials.

    Join us, won’t you?

    ++++++++++

In blogging matters, Flap will be visiting his father in law who is in the Los Angeles VA Hospital for most of the day and evening. Blogging will be intermittent at best.

However, catch Flap on Twitter in the right sidebar ————>

Sorru, but, I was away yesterday with errands and visiting my father in law who is in the hospital. The above is yesterday’s Day By Day.

The Tea Party tax revolt which started with the Obama Economic Stimulus Law commonly referred as PORKULUS is growing as the Democrats go back to the well to spend and then spend some more.

Here is Michelle’s round-up of yesterday’s Tea Parties.
