Iran Nuclear Watch: United Nations Security Council Divided Over Response to Iran Nuclear FLAP
Members of the United Nations Security Council are seen during a meeting at U.N. headquarters in New York, July 30, 2004. The five veto-holding powers of the U.N. Security Council on Monday struggled to clear the way for a council statement on reining in Iran’s nuclear programs, but agreement appeared elusive.

The United States, Britain and France will seek backing for a tough approach to reining in Iran’s nuclear ambitions from the full U.N. Security Council after inconclusive talks with Russia and China, diplomats said on Monday.
All 15 members of the Security Council will be briefed on Tuesday on a statement the three Western powers want the council to adopt in response to a report on Iran’s programs by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency delivered last Wednesday.
NO SURPRISE here. China and Russia will NEVER back punitive action against Iran.
Russia and China have been uneasy about Security Council involvement in the Iran crisis during a series of negotiations among the five permanent council veto-holding members, said the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A council statement needs to be approved by all 15 members while a resolution requires nine votes in favor and no veto from any of the permanent members. The West could try to force Russia and China into a veto if the impasse continue.
“Whether it is a statement or a resolution we haven’t decided,” U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told reporters. “We are trying to take this one step at a time.”
John Bolton may be manuvering Russia and China into a VETO to expose them for the FRAUDS that they are on the Iranian nuclear program. But, what does the United States want out of tomorrow’s meeting?
The Western powers would like a statement that would call on Iran to stop all uranium enrichment-related activities and for the IAEA to report back to the Security Council in a short period of time. Britain, diplomats, said, had suggested 14 days but any date is likely to be closer to 30 days.
Flap handicaps that is doubtful that the West obtains a council statement and only a small chance of a resolution. However, the West is capable of their own sanctions outside of the United Nations and that is what the United States, Britain and France will do if the United Nations gives them NO satisfaction.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s meeting…….
