Iran Nuclear Watch: IAEA Report – “Iran DETERMINED to Expand Uranium Enrichment”

ASSociated Press: Iran Reportedly Aims to Widen Nuke Program

Iran appears determined to expand its uranium enrichment program â€” a key international concern because of fears it could eventually make nuclear weapons, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a new report Monday.

The U.N. watchdog, in a confidential report made available to The Associated Press, said Iran plans to start setting up thousands of uranium enriching centrifuges this year even as it negotiates with Russia on scrapping such domestic activity.

The 11-page report emphasized that a more than three-year probe has not revealed “any diversion of nuclear material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.”

Still, it declared that â€” because of lack of sufficient cooperation from the Iranian side â€” the IAEA remained unable “to conclude that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities in Iran.”

The finding was essentially an admission that the agency cannot establish whether Iran is hiding aspects of its nuclear program that it is obligated to report to the IAEA, the U.N. atomic watchdog, under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Patience is wearing thin in Washington and Tel Aviv.

â€¢ “Iran again declined to provide” a copy of a document located earlier by IAEA inspectors showing how to cast fissile uranium into the shape to fit a warhead.

â€¢ There were “inconsistencies” in tests of plutonium isotopes provided to the agency to help it look into plutonium separation experiments in the mid-1990s, suggesting that not all plutonium had been accounted for.

â€¢ Iran dismissed information based on U.S. intelligence documenting links between the so-called “Green Salt Project” â€” a precursor of uranium enrichment â€” with nuclear-related high explosives and warhead design as “based on false and fabricated documents.”

“It is regrettable and a matter of concern that the … uncertainties related to the scope of nature of Iran’s nuclear program have not been clarified after three years of intensive agency verification,” said the report.

“Without full transparency … the agency’s ability to reconstruct the history of Iran’s past program and verify the correctness and completeness of statements made by Iran … will be limited and questions about the past and current direction of Iran’s nuclear program will continue to be raised.”

Iran WILL continue upon the road of increasing uranium enrichment regardless of the United Nations and the IAEA.
