Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki – Big 6 Proposal “A Step Forward”

Iran’s foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki, left, shake hands with his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos, during a meeting at the Santa Cruz Palace, in Madrid, Wednesday, June 14, 2006. Mottaki said Wednesday that his country wants to resolve a growing standoff with the West over its nuclear program, and described as ‘a step forward’ an offer of incentives designed to persuade Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment. ‘We consider it a step forward to present this package of incentives,’ Mottaki said as he arrived at Madrid airport for talks with his Spanish counterpart. He was referring to a proposal devised by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany that was presented to Tehran last week.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said nuclear incentive proposals made by the world’s major powers were “a step forward,” the Spanish government said on Wednesday after the minister met Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.

Mottaki said Iran’s right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes must be compatible with setting adequate guarantees to overcome the concerns of the international community, the statement added.

“He recognized the value of the proposal presented by (EU) High Representative (Javier) Solana as a step forward in the negotiation process and stressed the interest with which Iranian authorities were studying it,” it said.

Solana, the EU’s foreign policy chief, handed over on June 6 a batch of trade, technological and security incentives for Iran to halt nuclear fuel work in Tehran.

Mottaki is “slow playing” the negotiations while President Ahmadinejad trolls for support from Russia and China. He is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The deadline for Iran is the G-8 Summit in mid-July, irrespective to what Iran blusters.

So, there is plenty of time for posturing……

Stay tuned…….

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (C) arrives at the Pudong Airport in Shanghai to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, June 14, 2006.
