Iran Nuclear Watch: Russia Says NO RUSH on Iran United Nations Security Council Resolution
Russian and Iranian technicians work inside the reactor building of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, in southern Iran, February 2006. Iran has said that it was still counting on support from Russia and China over its disputed nuclear programme, and warned the referral of the issue back to the UN Security Council would derail any possible negotiations
AP: Russia says no rush on Iran resolution
The U.N. Security Council is in no rush to pressure Iran over its suspect nuclear program, Russia said Wednesday, striking a more conciliatory tone than the United States as diplomats began discussing a resolution to put legal muscle behind demands that Tehran suspend uranium enrichment.
Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the council wants an answer sometime soon to a June 5 package of incentives that six world powers offered to Iran if it stopped enrichment. But he stressed the council is not trying to push Tehran.
“We are not in a rush at all,” Churkin said. “We do not want to ambush Iran in any way. We’re very much in a negotiating political mode. We do not want to dictate things to Iran.”
“Nobody’s pushing Iran anywhere,” he said.
And does Ambassador Churkin REALLY think the United States and Israel will wait for the eunuch-like United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program?
Probably…..but America knows what Russia’s interests are – to suck up to Iran and all of their oil money. Same goes for China.
And remember in the Cold War – WE WON, the Soviets LOST.So, naturally Russia loves to watch Iran and the Mullahs prod and poke the United States in the eye.
The Russian tone contrasted with Washington’s. The U.S. has been vocal in its frustration with the Iranian response so far.
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said Washington had instructed him to get a resolution on Iran passed by the end of the week. But with the council so busy on Lebanon, and negotiations on Iran likely to take several days, other diplomats said that seemed unlikely.
The five permanent members of the council met Wednesday to trade ideas about the language of a new resolution. The dynamic appeared to be the same as it was when the council haggled over a statement confronting Iran’s nuclear ambitions in March: China and Russia looking for weaker action, with Britain, France and the U.S. seeking a tough response.
John Bolton can try all he likes but the UNSC will DO NOTHING to stop Iran’s enrichment of uranium. The United States and Israel WILL – when a point of no return is reached.
In the meantime, as the diplomats draft resolution after resolution, the centrifuges in Natanz are spinning…….Stay tuned……

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iranian President Ahmadinejad Sends Letter to German Chancellor Merkel
Parliament Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel (3rd R) visits the Bushehr nuclear power plant, 1,200 Kms south of Tehran in June 2006. An Iranian MP has warned that Iran’s hardline parliament may push though a law on suspending membership of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if the Security Council pressures Tehran to freeze sensitive atomic work.
Reuters: Iran’s Ahmadinejad sends letter to Germany’s Merkel
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has written to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the ISNA students news agency reported on Wednesday, but the contents of his letter were not immediately clear.
A German diplomat confirmed the report but the Iranian Foreign Ministry was not immediately available to comment on the contents of the letter to one of Iran’s leading trade partners.
Germany’s relations with Ahmadinejad have been complicated by his denial of the Holocaust in which six million Jews were killed.

Israel at War: Hezbollah Rockets Slam Into Nazareth
Smoke rises from a Hizbollah stronghold in southern Beirut after an Israeli air strike, July 19,2006.
AP: 2 young boys killed by Hezbollah rocket
Hezbollah rockets slammed into the Israeli-Arab town of Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus, on Wednesday, killing two young brothers as they played outside and wounding 18 other people, Israeli authorities said.
The attack came hours after Israeli troops engaged in a fierce firefight with Hezbollah guerrillas inside Lebanon, in a clash that killed two soldiers and one of the militants.
In Nazareth, smoke billowed from a building damaged in one of the strikes on the town of 70,000 about 20 miles south of the Lebanese border. Nazareth is the largest Israeli-Arab town in the country and is the center of Arab life in northern Israel.
Israel must disarm and neutralize the Hezbollah threat to its own security. News reports say President Bush has given Israel one week to clear out these terrorists from southern Lebanon.
Flap says Israel should be given free rein and when Hezbollah is defeated and all of their munitions destroyed then there can be a cease-fire. Not before……
After all, this is America’s war too.Stay tuned…….

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Giuliani Leads in Gallup Poll
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani smiles when asked by reporters about considering running for president in 2008 after he addressed the role of the community in the war on terror and disaster planning Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. Giuliani was in the state campaigning for Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka.
The Gallup Poll: Four in 10 Republicans Would Not Find McCain an “Acceptable” Nominee
Gallup’s June 26-29 poll tested Democrats’ (and Democrat-leaning independents’) reactions to 13 potential candidates and Republicans’ (and Republican leaning independents’) reactions to 12 potential candidates. While none of the politicians evaluated in the poll have officially announced their candidacies for president, many have laid the groundwork for a run by visiting early primary and caucus states like Iowa or New Hampshire or by setting up political action committees to raise money for themselves and other candidates.
The Results:
Only three candidates would be acceptable to a majority of Republicans — Giuliani (73%), Rice (68%), and McCain (55%).
Next, I’m going to read you a list of people who may run for the Republican nomination for president in 2008. For each, please tell me if you would find that person to be an acceptable nominee for president from the Republican Party, or not. First, [RANDOM ORDER].

So far, this is Rudy’s election to lose.
Remember Flap’s handicap pick for the GOP ticket: Rudy Giuliani – George Allen.
But Condi Rice is polling very well and it is conceivable that she could be convinced to be on the ticket as Giuliani’s Vice President.
Stay tuned……

Republicans seem more ready for a Giuliani campaign than one would have guessed, given Rudy’s position on abortion and gun rights.

Representative Cynthia McKinney Watch: McKinney Heads to Runoff Election
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, right, gathers with Cindy Sheehan Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at her campaign headquarters in DeKalb, Ga.
AP: McKinney heads to runoff in Georgia
Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney couldn’t avoid a runoff in her first election following a scuffle with a Capitol Hill police officer, and now faces a second contest against her main challenger, Hank Johnson.
McKinney, the state’s first black woman elected to Congress, is seeking her seventh term after a scuffle in March with an officer who stopped her when he didn’t recognize her as she entered a House office building. A federal grand jury in Washington declined to indict the congresswoman, but she had to apologize on the floor of the House.
Johnson, a former county commissioner, has roots in McKinney’s core constituency. With 95 percent of precincts reporting, 1,540 votes separated the two. They face an Aug. 8 runoff, and the winner will face Republican nominee Catherine Davis in the heavily Democratic district.
“The battle’s engaged and I intend to win,” said McKinney early Wednesday.
But, McKinney would not have faced a serious challenge in a runoff election if she had not scuffled with that Capitol policeman. Looks like McKinney will have to show up for debates with Johnson (which she declined to do before the primary election) and face the media and voters.

However, don’t look for any explanations of her behavior or any serious discussion of the issues.McKinney slow played the election and may do the same in the runoff.
AJC: McKinney headed for runoff with Johnson
U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney is headed to a runoff against a relatively unknown challenger in a Democratic primary she was expected to win with ease.
The controversial 4th District incumbent, accused of striking a Capitol Hill police officer last March, narrowly led former DeKalb County Commissioner Hank Johnson.
Alpharetta businessman John F. Coyne III came in a distant third but with enough votes to play the spoiler in his first election, keeping McKinney from topping 50 percent of the vote.
Few political analysts expected McKinney to have much trouble in her re-election bid even though her longheld status as a political lightning rod reached new heights over her very public confrontation with the Capitol guard.
Using a strategy that has been effective before, McKinney ran a low-key campaign — even refusing to appear at major debates against her challengers. She concentrated on her base in south DeKalb, meeting with constituents in the area.

Stay tuned this race may prove to be interesting albeit colorful……….
She was joined at her campaign gathering Tuesday by Cindy Sheehan and Lithonia resident Patricia Roberts, two mothers whose sons were killed in Iraq and who have criticized the war.
Johnson said Tuesday he was prepared for a runoff against McKinney.
“We trained for 15 rounds, and this is round 12,†he told cheering supporters. “We’re not ceding any location.â€
The Moonbats will ALL be out……in Georgia…….
And Allah is correct: Isn’t Cindy Sheehan supposed to be FASTING?Captain Ed predicts McKinney is a LOSER in three weeks. But, Ed, we already knew she was!
