Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has recruited veteran Republican activist Wayne Semprini to lead his New Hampshire operations.

Giuliani, who is mulling a White House run, announced the appointment Monday, following his weekend visit to the first-in-the-nation primary state.

“We picked up a lot of supporters this weekend,” Semprini said.

Semprini, who until Saturday was the state Republican Party chairman, has been involved in New Hampshire politics since 1972.

A good pick up for the Giuliani campaign. Others think not so much.

But, this could be health related?

Semprini had cited health problems as his reason not to seek another term leading the state GOP, but said surgery earlier this month appears to have resolved complications from a hip replacement.

“My rehab is going phenomenally well,” Semprini said. “At this stage, I should be up to fighting speed by the first of March. … I’ll still be involved, but from a different angle now.”

Others already on board:

Giuliani has hired other key staff in New Hampshire, including veteran GOP activist David Tille as his political director. Chris Wood, a veteran of Steve Forbes’ and Pat Buchanan’s campaigns, will lead coalition building.

Previously, Flap had reported on the New Hampshire operation:

Giuliani’s New Hampshire senior campaign team will include:

  • Jeb Bradley’s former outreach director, David Tille, as state political director. Tille had been with Bradley since 2002 and previously worked for Sen. Bob Smith and Rep. Charlie Bass.
  • Jeff Semprini, the son of outgoing state GOP chairman Wayne Semprini, as a regional field director and youth and college outreach coordinator.
  • UNH graduate Misty Haungs as state field director. A deputy regional political director for the Republican National Committee, she is a former Judd Gregg staffer and field manager for the GOP’s New Hampshire Victory 2004 organization.
  • Veteran conservative organizer and strategist Chris Wood as coalitions director. He has long been active in the state GOP, the right-to-work movement and the anti-tax Citizens for a Sound Economy. He’s also worked for Presidential hopefuls Steve Forbes and Pat Buchanan.
