Richmond prepares for dinners with Giuliani, Obama

Tonight, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will headline a Republican event downtown. And then just a few blocks away Saturday night, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will be the featured speaker at a dinner.

Combined, the candidates are expected to raise more than $1 million this weekend. They’re both hoping to get more than a good meal while in town. They both need votes.

So, will Barack miss the anti-Surge Iraq War vote in the Senate?

Doubtful…….

“We don’t consider him just a New York’s mayor. He’s America’s mayor,” says former Virginia attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore, who is hosting the private fundraiser.

Republican supporters will be coming from across the commonwealth to attend. They will have paid up to $1,000 to get in. “He’s gonna be shaking hands and meeting Virginians and asking for their support,” Kilgore says.

On the menu: Beef Wellington and smoked chicken quesadillas. But Giuliani will be lucky to get a whiff of the food. “I don’t think any candidate ever gets to eat at these things,” Kilgore says, laughing.

Agreed.

In California last weekend the Mayor was able to eat four or five bites of his lunch and then posed the rest of the time for photos or signed autographs.

And the Mayor is definitely looking trimmer.
