Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin Watch: USA – Don’t Dictate to Me

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin talks to media following a tour of a sawmill in Richmond just south of Vancouver, British Columbia December 14, 2005.

Reuters has Don’t dictate to me, Canada’s Martin tells US

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin escalated a war of words with the United States on Wednesday, telling Washington not to dictate to him what topics he can raise in the run-up to Canada’s January 23 election.

But U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins, who warned Canadian politicians on Tuesday not to bash the United States as part of their campaigning, denied on Wednesday he was trying to control the election debate.

Martin — who has regularly attacked the U.S. stance on a bilateral trade dispute over softwood lumber and also criticized Washington’s approach to climate change — took aim at Wilkins’s warning for a second consecutive day.

“When it comes to defending Canadian values, when it comes to standing up for Canadian interests, I’m going to call it like I see it,” he told reporters in a lumber yard in Richmond, British Columbia. “I am not going to be dictated to as to the subjects I should raise.”

Well, we will see how well this corrupt political HACK does in the January national elections.

Flap handicaps that corrupt Paul Martin will be the BIGGEST LOSER in this shameless political posturing.

CIA Leak Case Watch: Bob Novak – “President Knows Leak Source”

Karl Rove and Bob Novak, who first published the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, says he is confident that President George W. Bush knows who leaked Plame’s name.

The ASSociated Press has Bob Novak Says President Knows Leak Source

Columnist Bob Novak, who first published the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, says he is confident that President Bush knows who leaked Plame’s name.

Novak said that “I’d be amazed” if the president didn’t know the source’s identity and that the public should “bug the president as to whether he should reveal who the source is.”

Novak’s remarks, reported in the Raleigh, N.C., News & Observer, came during a question and answer session Tuesday after a speech sponsored by the John Locke Foundation, a conservative think tank.

Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer urged Bush to identify Novak’s source or to say that he does not know who it is.

Flap bets the response is “Executive Privilege” and neither confirmation nor denial.

President 2008 Watch: Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to Announce He Won’t Seek Re-election

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney addresses a luncheon at the first annual Massachusetts Conference for Women in this Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 file photo, in Boston. Romney has decided not to seek re-election in 2006, a source told The Associated Press on Wednesday, fueling speculation he will run for president in 2008. The 58-year-old businessman and son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney scheduled an evening news conference to announce his re-election plans.

The Boston Globe has Romney to announce he won’t seek re-election

Governor is expected to seek GOP presidential nomination in 2008

Governor Mitt Romney will announce at 6 p.m. that he will not seek re-election to a second term, setting the stage for an expected campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, a senior aide to the governor said today.

The aide told the Boston Globe that Romney will announce that he will fill out his term, which ends in January, 2007. The move is widely seen as another step in his plans to launch a presidential campaign. His announcement today is expected to be televised live from the State House.

The 58-year-old businessman, son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, has spent less than three years in elective office, but in that time the state has closed a $3 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, schools have scored first in national math and science tests and Romney held out until the Legislature gave him a tough new drunken driving law he demanded.

This will be perceived as a NEGATIVE in his political Curriculum Vitae i.e. never standing for re-election to his only political office.

The announcement ends months of speculation over whether Romney, who took office after winning the 2002 gubernatorial election, would seek the presidency after only one term in office. He confirmed last spring that he was testing the presidential waters. During the past year, he has made frequent trips out of state, often to states that are considered key primary battle grounds in a presidential campaign.

Romney can run but the nomination belongs to either Rudy Giuliani or John McCain.

Stanley “Tookie” Williams Executed: The Funeral

Barbara Becnel, spokesperson for Stanley Tookie Williams, speaks outside of San Quentin State prison in San Quentin, Calif., Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2005. Convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams, the Crips gang co-founder whose case stirred a national debate about capital punishment and the possibility of redemption, was executed Tuesday morning. Williams, 51, died around 12:35 a.m. after receiving a lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison, officials said.

The San Francisco Chronicle has L.A. FUNERAL: Ashes will be taken to South Africa

Stanley Tookie Williams’ ashes will be scattered in South Africa after a large and public funeral planned for early next week in Los Angeles, the co-author of his anti-gang books said Tuesday.

Barbara Becnel said that Williams, who was executed early Tuesday, wanted his ashes to be scattered in Africa.

“He wanted to return to his ancestral home,” Becnel said. “We chose South Africa because I know some members of the Mandela family.”

So, now Barbara Becel is playing the race and apartheid card in Tookie’s death.

Flap can only imagine what a spectacle this funeral will be.

Williams and Becnel met Winnie Mandela in 1996, when she visited San Quentin State Prison to speak to them about the Internet Project for Street Peace, a computer program that links at-risk youths in Richmond with young people in Cape Town and Soweto.

The ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela was one of numerous public figures who made unsuccessful appeals to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant clemency to Williams, who turned anti-gang activist after being convicted of four 1979 shotgun murders in the Los Angeles area.

Didn’t Winnie Mandela murder Stompie Seipei Moketsi? But, she got off on a technicality……

    Read about this here.

The body of the 51-year-old Williams was removed Tuesday from San Quentin and taken to an Oakland mortuary. Becnel said the body will be transported to Los Angeles for a memorial service that will probably be held Tuesday.

A site has not been picked, “but it will be a large venue that can hold more than 16,000 people,” Becnel said. Confirmed speakers include rapper Snoop Dogg, NAACP President Bruce Gordon and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, she said.

California Taxes Watch: Smokers Will Pay More

An unidentified man smokes a cigarette in Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005. A coalition of health organizations wants to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 300 percent in California to boost funding for hospital emergency care, nursing education, cancer research and a variety of other health programs. The per-pack tax would jump by $2.60 under an initiative the coalition hopes to have on the November 2006 ballot, supporters said Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005.

Timm Herdt of the Ventura County Star has Smokers might pay more

Proposed tax measure would impose $2.60-per-pack increase

Hospitals and healthcare advocacy groups in California, which had been headed toward an intramural fight over dueling tobacco-tax initiatives, on Tuesday united behind a single, massive tax measure they hope to put before voters in November.

The measure would seek a $2.60-per-pack tax increase on cigarettes, which would raise the price of a pack of cigarettes by about 65 percent and give California by far the highest tobacco taxes in America. The increase alone is higher than the current top state tax rate of $2.46 in Rhode Island. Along Tobacco Road in North Carolina, the tax is just a nickel a pack.

When added to the existing 87 cents per pack in California, it would bring the state taxes on a single pack of cigarettes to $3.47.

The only jurisdiction that comes close is New York City, where the city and state each impose a $1.50 tax for a combined tax of $3 per pack.

    California Death Penalty Watch: Moratorium?

This undated photograph courtesy of the California Department of Corrections shows the San Quentin Prison execution chamber.

The Los Angeles Times has Death Penalty Moratorium on the Table

Five Democrats want a hiatus until 2009 while a state panel reviews the system. The plan, unrelated to Williams case, faces a fight.

State legislators in early January will consider what is likely to be a contentious proposal to postpone executions for as long as three years.

On Jan. 10, an Assembly committee plans to consider legislation that would place a moratorium on executions until a special commission finishes examining whether California’s criminal justice system allows innocent people to be convicted.

The bill, the first of its kind in Sacramento in more than a decade, faces substantial political and legal hurdles. Its hearing — scheduled long before convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams’ execution Tuesday — comes as the state is poised to perform a record number of executions in the coming year.

The California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice, created by the state Senate last year, is studying the extent to which people have been wrongly convicted of crimes. The commission, composed of people on all sides of the issue, was charged with suggesting improvements to lawmakers by the end of 2007.

Among the topics the panel is set to look at are the frequency of police suppression of exculpatory evidence, and false testimony from witnesses and jailhouse informants.

“There’s a half a dozen issues that are recurring in exoneration cases,” said Jon Streeter, a San Francisco business trial lawyer who is chairman of the panel. “We see them time and time again. They tend to arise in death penalty cases, where the problems can be the most serious.”

Five Democrats have proposed the moratorium until either the Legislature “has fully considered” the panel’s suggestions or, if lawmakers take no action, Jan. 1, 2009.

    NO WAY!

The people of California have time after time voted for the death penalty. Opponents of it are trying to wear down “ultimate penalty” advocates and through attrition gain what they otherwise would never win in an election.

Death penalty proponents, however, say they will vigorously oppose any delay.

“This is the most liberal Legislature in the country,” said Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks). “I would not be the least bit surprised if it adopted a moratorium or even attempted to rescind the death penalty entirely. But if they do, they’ll have a fight on their hands.”

And a FIGHT they will have…..

Clarence Ray Allen Watch: Petitions California Governor Schwarzenegger for Clemency

The Los Angeles Times has Oldest Inmate on Death Row Petitions Gov. for Clemency

The state’s oldest death row convict asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for clemency Tuesday, a day after the governor rejected a bid for mercy from Stanley Tookie Williams, allowing the Crips co-founder to die by lethal injection.

Clarence Ray Allen, 75, said he was too frail to be put to death Jan. 17 as scheduled. In 1980, while serving at Folsom State Prison for arranging the 1974 murder of his son’s girlfriend, Allen ordered the killings of eight witnesses against him in a related market burglary case in Fresno. His hit man killed a witness and two market employees.

n his petition, Allen claims that his physical infirmities, including a recent heart attack, have left him nearly deaf and blind and warrant a reprieve.

“He prays for that mercy because he is aged and infirm, suffering from chronic diseases that have been aggravated by the grossly inadequate medical treatment he has received at San Quentin and that have left him unable to walk, nearly blind, hard of hearing, and so physically incapacitated that his execution for the purpose of incapacitating him from the commission of further crime is manifestly unnecessary,” his attorney, Michael Satris, wrote to Schwarzenegger.

Although Satris also questions Allen’s guilt, the petition presents Schwarzenegger — who has rejected all three petitions for clemency that have come before him — with a far different claim: that physical infirmities are grounds for clemency.

Clarence Ray Allen’s crimes are summarized here.

The Los Angeles Times has Aging, Ill Inmate Is Next in Line for Execution

His situation is dramatically different from that of Williams, a co-founder of the Crips gang, who has been the subject of an unusual, highly visible clemency campaign. Full-page newspaper advertisements and speeches from clergymen, celebrities and activists proclaimed that Williams has redeemed himself through his anti-gang activities.

In contrast, Allen has not displayed any visible public support, and the last appeals court to review his case characterized his crimes as the very type the death penalty was designed to address.

But Allen’s attorneys have raised a question that is likely to recur, with the “graying” of death rows around the country and the concomitant health problems afflicting many elderly inmates: Is it appropriate to execute someone who is old and infirm?

There are now five condemned men in California who are over 70 and nearly three dozen in their 60s. Since California reinstated capital punishment, 31 men have died on death row of natural causes and 11 have been executed. The oldest person executed in California in the modern era was 62-year-old Donald Beardslee, who was killed earlier this year.

Though there has been sharp debate in recent years over the execution of individuals for crimes committed as juveniles, there is no law anywhere in the country setting an upper age limit for execution. And although governors and parole boards have occasionally granted clemency to condemned inmates because of mental illness, no death sentence has been commuted based solely on age or illness.

It is the moronic and idiotic delay in the legal process that has allowed this criminal to live all of these years so he could become infirm.

This is another NO-BRAINER for Governor Schwarzenegger.

Justice for Allen’s victims and carry out the law – BIG JAB – on January 17th.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Holocaust Is a “MYTH”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad waves to lawmakers as he arrives at parliament to attend an open session to debate his Oil Minister nominee, in Tehran, Iran, in this file photo from Dec. 11, 2005. Ahmadinejad said Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, the Holocaust is a ‘myth’ that Europeans have used to create a Jewish state in the heart of the Islamic world.

The ASSociated Press has Iran President: Holocaust Is a ‘Myth’

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday the Holocaust is a “myth” that Europeans have used to create a Jewish state in the heart of the Islamic world.

“Today, they have created a myth in the name of Holocaust and consider it to be above God, religion and the prophets,” Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in the southeastern city of Zahedan.

The Iranian president previously expressed doubt that the Nazi destruction of six million European Jews during World War II had occurred. But Wednesday was the first time he publicly denied the Holocaust.

Ahmadinejad provoked an international outcry in October when he called for Israel to be “wiped off the map.”

Touring southeast Iran, Ahmadinejad said that if Europeans insist the Holocaust did happen, then they are responsible and should pay the price.

“If you committed this big crime, then why should the oppressed Palestinian nation pay the price?” Ahmadinejad asked rhetorically.

“This is our proposal: if you committed the crime, then give a part of your own land in Europe, the United States, Canada or Alaska to them so that the Jews can establish their country,” he said, developing a theme he raised in Saudi Arabia last week.

And why are the Europeans and Americans negotiating with this madman over nuclear materials?

Ahmadinejad said that if Iran gave in on the nuclear dispute, there was no guarantee the West might not refuse to sell nuclear fuel in the future.

“I assure you that we won’t step back one inch from our nuclear rights,” the president told the crowd, drawing chants of “Death to America!”

A strike at Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities is being finalized.
