Israel at War Watch: United Nations Security Council Unanimously Adopts Resolution to End Israel-Hezbollah War

    israelaugust11lweb

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice votes on a resolution during a meeting of the Security Council Friday Aug. 11, 2006 at the United Nations in New York. The resolution calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and authorizes the deployment of 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

AP: Security Council OKs Mideast Peace Deal

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and authorizes the deployment of 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

The draft, which had been proposed by the United States and France, offers the best chance yet for peace after more than four weeks of significant bloodshed. It was the first significant action by the Security Council, the most powerful U.N. body, to address a war that has killed more than 800 people, destroyed Lebanon’s infrastructure and inflamed tensions across the Middle East.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert endorsed the resolution late Friday, after a day of dramatic day brinksmanship including a threat to expand the ground war in Lebanon. But Israeli officials said Israel would not halt fighting until Israel’s Cabinet has approved the cease-fire deal in its weekly meeting Sunday.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora also assured Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that his country backed the resolution, a U.S. official said.

Raise the White Flag of Surrender.

Flap can see Sheik Hassan Nazrallah, the leader of of Hezbollah tomorrow crawling out of his bunker and mocking Israel as a toothless paper tiger and declaring victory. A victory that the United States and France helped broker.

This is an unbelievable turn of events.

Omert will lose the Prime Ministership and his government WILL fall within a week.

President Bush and more specifically Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have lost credibility with American conservatives and have paved the way for GOP electoral disaster in November.

Flap cannot simply fathom this surrender to the Hezbollah.

Yoni the Blogger, a former IDF member cannot believe it either. And what of the troops that have to maintain the peace while under fire as the Israeli cabinet draws out its acceptance of the deal?

Michelle Malkin has Wave the white flag–and Hizballah’s

Israel and the West surrender to Hizballah.

    Terrorists and the U.N. win.

    Here are the depressing details.

Israel at War Watch: Israeli Prime Minister Olmert Has Accepted United Nations Cease-Fire Deal

    israelaugust11fweb

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is seen in this August 8, 2006 file photo. Olmert faced a backlash on Friday over a U.N. proposal to end the war in Lebanon, with army officers charging that they were held back and right-wing rivals calling for new elections.

AP: Israeli PM has accepted cease-fire deal

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has accepted an emerging Mideast cease-fire deal and informed the United States of his decision, Israeli officials said Friday.

Olmert will recommend that his government approve the deal in its meeting on Sunday, said Gideon Meir, a senior official in the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Meir said the military offensive in Lebanon would continue for the time being. It was not immediately clear if it would be halted after the U.N. Security Council vote on the cease-fire deal later Friday, or only after the Israeli Cabinet has endorsed it.

Put a fork in Olmert…..He is DONE.

    Allah explains why.

There will be new elections in Israel and QUICK.

Flap knows that this war is NOT over.

Paul Mirengoff over at Powerline agrees with Flap.

And John Podhoretz over at National Review also believes the Omert government is finished – in less than a week.

Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Richie Rich and the Two Anti-Semites

Ned Lamont center, embraces Tommie Jackson, pastor of the Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church at a breakfast with Rev. Al Sharpton, right, Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, in Stamford, Conn. Lamont is receiving an endorsement from Sharpton for his run in the Democratic primary against Sen. Joe Lieberman.
Powerline: Richie Rich and the two anti-semites

Via Steve Hayward at No Left Turns.

Michael Barone made the same point on Fox News, noting that Lieberman ran well in ethnic blue collar areas while Lamont carried the swanky precincts of Fairfield County by huge margins. According to Barone, these swanky precients have disproportionately high turnout rates in primaries. Moreover, Lamont may have compounded his problem by giving his victory speech with the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Kim Gandy. As my conservative cousin from New York explains,

[this] won’t help Lamont or the Democratic Party gain the votes of Polish shipyards workers in New London or Irish insurance industry employees in West Hartford. More to the point this kind of image could make such states as New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania swing to the GOP in the next Presidential election. When [my wife] whose political sensibilities often mirror those of Blue Collar Catholics saw Lamont on the stage with Sharpton and Jackson she blurted out “there’s Richie Rich and the two Anti-Semites.”

    Read it all……

Israel at War Watch: United Nations Security Council Resolution to End War?

    israelATWARweb

Reuters: Key powers agree deal to end Israel-Hizbollah war

Key U.N. Security Council members have agreed on a resolution to end Israel’s month-old war with Hizbollah and a vote was possible later on Friday, British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said.

An Israeli political source said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was reviewing the draft resolution. Earlier in the day, Israel ordered an expansion of its ground offensive and said it would press ahead with the campaign if it was unhappy with any deal.

Israeli tank forces were preparing for orders to sweep into Lebanon after the wider offensive was approved, Israeli TV said.

“We have an agreed text,” Beckett told reporters, adding she hoped that Israel and Lebanon would abide by it. She said the full Security Council would receive the draft at 1900 GMT.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice flew to New York in anticipation of a vote on ending the war, in which at least 1,030 people in Lebanon and 123 Israelis have been killed.

In the meantime, Israel is pressing ahead with a wide scale land invasion of Lebanon.

Flap does not trust the United Nations and this had better be a good deal or……

    Update #1

The resolution will be under Chapter 6 of the U.N Charter and would include U.N forces with an “enhanced mandate.”

It looks like an appeasement deal to Lebanona and Hezbollah.  Flap predicts if Omert and the Israeli government accepts this proposal that Olmert’s government will fall.
    LET ISRAEL PROCEED.

Global War on Terror Watch: Recipients of “LEAKS” May be Prosecuted Under the Espionage Act

    gwotjune27pweb

Secrecy News (Via Captain Ed): Recipients of “Leaks” May Be Prosecuted, Court Rules

In a momentous expansion of the government’s authority to regulate public disclosure of national security information, a federal court ruled that even private citizens who do not hold security clearances can be prosecuted for unauthorized receipt and disclosure of classified information.

The ruling (pdf) by Judge T.S. Ellis, III, denied a motion to dismiss the case of two former employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) who were charged under the Espionage Act with illegally receiving and transmitting classified information.

The decision is a major interpretation of the Espionage Act with implications that extend far beyond this particular case.

The Judge ruled that any First Amendment concerns regarding freedom of speech involving national defense information can be superseded by national security considerations.

If Flap were Bill Keller of the New York Times, I would be more reticent and reluctant to flaunt the disclosure of national security programs (like the NSA, SWIFT, Secret Renditions/Prisons) that government insiders “leak” to the newspaper. After all, irresponsibility may mean some real jail time here.
Does Flap think the Bush Administration will prosecute Keller, Risen or Lichtblau for their recent notorious disclosure of the SWIFT program?

    NOPE

But, if the government discovers who leaked the information in the first place, you can bet that those New York Times miscreants will be subpoened to testify in the case and be forced to give up their sources – or face prosecution themselves. It is called leverage.

Patterico thinks this case is huge.

    Doubtful….

But, another tool to prevent disclosure of national security secrets.

Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Latest Rasmussen Poll Has Lieberman Beating Lamont

    liebermanaugust11ajpgweb

Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont gestures as he speaks after his victory in the Democratic state primary at the Four Points Sheraton in Meriden, Conn., Aug. 8, 2006. The anti-war challenger Lamont won over Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, a stalwart supporter of Bush on the war. At left, Lamont’s wife Annie; daughter Lindsay is second from right. Rev. Jesse Jackson applauds at right rear and Rev. Al Shaprton, partially obscured behind Lamont, raises his arm.

Rasmussen (Via Captain’s Quarters): Lamont Support Dropping

If the netroots plan on riding Ned Lamont all the way to the Senate floor, the independent campaign of Joe Lieberman has an unpleasant surprise waiting for them. According to a new Rasmussen poll, Lieberman has a lead over Lamont in a three-way race. Lieberman also has better favorability ratings than Lamont by a significant margin. Their previous survey, taken shortly before the election, showed the two men tied in a three-way race. Rasmussen will have the specific numbers out shortly (at this link), but the trends have reversed themselves in the last days of the primaries — and Connecticut voters have changed their minds about Lamont.

Flap suspects that Lieberman had the best polling stats that money could buy and structured his independent race against Ned Lamont weeks ago. The recent revelations of Lamont hypocrisy both on the “Black Face” Flap and the Wal-Mart hypocrisy were bonuses to Lieberman.

But, the netroots of Huffington and Kos are restless. They want demand Lieberman withdraw because they know that Lamont is an empty suit rich boy who will now actually have to be something other than an anti-Bush rhetorical prop.

If Lamont wishes to win this race, he will have to campaign for it AND develop some ISSUES. The Iraq War and President Bush (who will never have to stand election again) are just two issues – and two issues do NOT make a successful Senate candidate.

    The early polls reflect this.

Dean Barnett over at Hugh Hewitt has the numbers:

The first post-primary Nutmeg State Rasmussen poll shows Lieberman leading Lamont, 46-41, with the Republican getting 6. (The poll is for subscribers only – if you’re a political junkie, there are many worse ways that you could feed your habit than shelling out $95 to join the Rasmussen Premium Club.) The pre-primary Rasmussen poll of the general electorate showed Lamont and Lieberman in a flat-footed tie at 40.

Over at Kos someone thinks everything is grand…….

    Flap thinks so too……for Lieberman!
    Stay tuned…..

Global War on Terror Watch: British Identify 19 suspects in Heathrow Airplane Terrorist PLot

    heathrowaugust11aweb

British police officers gather outside a cordoned house in High Wycombe, England after a massive security operation resulted in a number of arrests across the United Kingdom, Aug. 11, 2006. The Bank of England froze the assets of 19 people early Friday, naming them as people arrested Thursday in connection with an alleged terror plot to bomb British passenger jets.

AP: 19 suspects in British terror plot ID’d

British officials identified 19 of the suspects accused of plotting to blow up U.S.-bound aircraft, making public a list of names that fueled suspicions of a Pakistan connection. Travelers at Britain’s airports again struggled with increased security, and dozens more flights were canceled Friday.

Five Pakistanis have been arrested in Pakistan as suspected “facilitators” of the plot, a government official said, in addition to two Britons arrested there about a week ago.

Well, what do you know – All Muslims….what a surprise?

    NOT

The Global War on Terror is a war against extreme islamofascism.

No, will the MSM report this? or cover it up?

British police have arrested 24 people suspected of involvement in the plot. Investigators, describing a plan on the scale of the Sept. 11 attacks, said the attackers planned to use common electronic devices to detonate liquid explosives to bring down as many as 10 planes.

The bombs were to be assembled on the aircraft, apparently with peroxide-based solution and everyday carry-on items such as a disposable camera or a music player, two American law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Britain asked that no information be released.

A federal law enforcement official in Washington said that at least one martyrdom tape was found during raids across England on Thursday. Such a tape, as well as the scheme to strike a range of targets at roughly the same time, is an earmark of al-Qaida.

Of course, this plot was hatched by extreme Islamic fundamentalist Muslims and by Al Qaeda. Why is the press so reluctant to report these facts?

Folks, this is a war. These terrorists want to KILL us.

British Home Secretary John Reid said Britain was grateful for Pakistan’s cooperation and that officials believed the main suspects were in custody. However, the threat level in the U.K. remained at “critical,” the highest level.

Agents in Pakistan arrested at least seven people, including two British nationals of Pakistani origin who provided information on the terror plot, a senior government official said Friday. The arrests were made in the eastern city of Lahore and in Karachi, the official said on condition of anonymity because he did not have the authority to speak formally on the issue.

Two were Britons arrested about a week ago, he said. The five Pakistanis were arrested on suspicion that they served as local “facilitators” for the two Britons, the official said. It wasn’t clear when they’d been detained.

The Guardian newspaper, citing unidentified British government sources, said that after the arrests a message was sent to Britain telling the plotters: “Do your attacks now.” That message was intercepted and decoded earlier this week, The Guardian said.

A U.S. congressman briefed by intelligence officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the investigation, said U.S. intelligence had intercepted terrorist chatter.

Many of the 24 suspects arrested in Britain were said to be British Muslims, and neighbors said at least two of those arrested were converts to Islam.

Undercover and secret surveillance played a role in discovering this plot. Thankfully, the New York Times did not publish secret intelligence and screw up this investigation.

Michelle Malkin has Behold the “broad strata” …and prosecuting blabbermouths

The Daily Telegraph notes that their bank accounts have been frozen by the Bank of England. Time mag reports “a knowledgeable American official says U.S. intelligence provided London authorities with intercepts of the group’s communications.” Money was reportedly wired for the plot from Karachi to London, which leads Allah to ask the right questions.

Jonathan Adler at the Volokh Conspiracy notes a new ruling that the federal government may prosecute private citizens who illegally receive and retransmit classified information (hat tip- Instapundit). The case has to do with two former employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), who are being prosecuted under the Espionage Act for obtaining classified information and communicating it to third parties, including members of the media. (I’ve blogged the story numerous times – start here and here.)

Bottom line of Adler’s legal analysis: “Under Judge Ellis’ interpretation, it also seems the federal government could prosecute reporters at the Washington Post and New York Times for their reports on secret prisons, NSA surveillance, and other classified counter-terrror activities.”

Patterico makes it clear in case you missed it.

    Stay tuned….
