Gas Attack at Russian Store: A Result of Cutthroat Capitalism?

People sickened after of a gas attack at a store of the Maksidom home-supplies chain, get medical care in hospital in St. Petersburg, Monday, Dec. 26, 2005. A gas attack on a Russian chain store sickened more than 70 people Monday, and boxes with glass vials attached to wires were found in three other outlets of the same store, authorities said. Police said they believed a commercial dispute or blackmail attempt was behind the incidents, and Russian news agencies quoted the city’s top official as saying that authorities had ruled out terrorism.

The ASSociated Press has Gas Attack at Russia Store Sickens Dozens

A gas attack in a home-supply store on one of the busiest shopping days of the year sickened scores of people Monday in an incident that police called likely motivated by a commercial dispute or blackmail attempt. Boxes containing timers wired to glass vials were discovered at the scene of the attack and three other stores in the same chain in Russia’s second-largest city.

Seventy-eight people sought medical care: 66 were briefly hospitalized and sent home without any lasting ill effects, officials said. Police said that the store where the people were sickened had not yet opened for the day and all those affected were store employees or police, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

A police spokesman told The Associated Press that some customers had been sickened.

Officials with the Maksidom home-supply chain, which sells furnishings, home-repair material and other domestic articles, said they had received recent threats that sales would be disrupted around New Year’s, when Russians traditionally give holiday gifts.

Most efforts to undermine competitors’ sales in Russia’s sharp-elbowed free market take the form of negative advertising or damaging rumors. Business-related violence nonetheless remains a feature of the cutthroat capitalism that enveloped Russia following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

How about the failure of the rule of law in Russia?

Something to keep in mind when it is reported that Russians are selling missle and nuclear technology to Iran and North Korea.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Graz Removes Schwarzenegger’s Name from Stadium

    Before

    AND……..

    After name change

Reuters has Graz removes Schwarzenegger’s name from stadium

Californian Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Austrian home town of Graz removed his name from the city’s stadium over Christmas, amid anger over his decision to deny clemency to a death row inmate.

Austrian news agency APA showed the stadium’s entrance displaying only its historical name, “Graz-Liebenau,” and quoted an anonymous city official as saying Schwarzenegger’s name had been removed overnight to avoid a public furor.

Graz city officials were not reachable on Monday, a holiday in Austria.

Left-wing politicians launched a petition drive in Graz to have the town rename the stadium because the Austrian-born governor allowed the execution of death-row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams this month.

Well, Governor Schwarzenegger received this belated Christmas present from the Austrian socialists who are against the death penalty.

While conservative mayor Siegfried Nagl opposed renaming the stadium, a city council majority of social democrats, communists and greens supported it. That prospect prompted Schwarzenegger to turn the tables and withdraw his name himself.

On December 19, Schwarzenegger demanded Graz stop using his name on the stadium and in promotions and returned a “ring of honor” he had been awarded by city officials in 1999, saying politicians in his hometown appeared to have rejected him.

Schwarzenegger, a former body building champion and Hollywood star, trained at the stadium as a young man. It was renamed in his honor in 1997.

Here we have immature and juvenile behavior both in the U.S. and Austria.

The Governor and Graz City Council should have better issues upon which to dwell.

Merry Christmas: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord”

    Luke

    Chapter 2

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Strategic Missle Defense Watch: Russians Deploy NEW Strategic Missle

Matt Drudge has Russia deploys new set of strategic nuclear missiles

The chief of Russia’s strategic forces on Saturday attended the deployment of a new set of state-of-the art intercontinental ballistic missiles, boasting of their capability to penetrate any prospective missile defense, news reports said.

Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov, chief of the Strategic Missile Forces, took part in a ceremony that marked the commissioning of the latest set of Topol-M missiles at a missile base in Tatishchevo in the Volga River’s Saratov region.

Solovtsov said Saturday that the new missile “is capable of penetrating any missile defense system,” the RIA Novosti and Interfax news agencies reported.

Russian officials have called prospective U.S. missile defenses destabilizing and boasted repeatedly that Russia’s new missiles could pierce any nation’s missile shield.

The Topol-M missiles, capable of hitting targets more than 10,000 kilometers (6,000 miles) away, have so far been deployed in silos. The mobile version, mounted on a heavy off-road vehicle, is to enter combat service next year, Solovtsov said.

The deployed Topol-Ms have been fitted with single nuclear warheads, but officials have considered plans to equip each missile with three individually targeted warheads.

Merry Christmas from the Russians – a NEW strategic missle with the capability of destroying American cities.

    Topol-M Missle

Here is a pre-deployment story on the Topol-M.

And the Russians have already tested earlier in the month a newly developed sea-based ICBM, the Bulava.

Russia successfully test-launched a newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile on Wednesday for the first time under water, the navy said.

The Bulava, a solid fuel missile, blasted off from the nuclear submarine Dmitry Donskoy in the White Sea and hit its designated target in the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, chief naval spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press.

“This is the second test-firing of the new generation missile Bulava and the first underwater launch of the missile,” he said.

Russia’s navy is to get two newly equipped nuclear submarines in 2006, armed with the new Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, the navy commander said in April. The missiles have a range of 5,000 miles.

Each submarine will be equipped with 12 missiles, the Interfax news agency reported.

In December last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin encouraged the Defense Ministry to keep up production of new strategic missile systems, a process slowed in the past by a shortage of funds.

And……“OUR FRIENDS?” the Russians are selling nuclear missle technology to the Iranians with help from the North Koreans.

It is a dangerous world out there my friends and the Senate Democrats are WORRIED about the Patriot Act?

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: California Infrastructure Bond Will NOT Include Tax Increases

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (L) presents actor Sylvester Stallone (R) with a city proclamation on the set of ‘Rocky VI’ in Pico Rivera, California December 23, 2005.

Reuters has Calif. gov. against infrastructure tax hike

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan for a potentially massive infrastructure bond will not include tax increases to finance the debt he will propose, a spokesman said on Friday.

Additionally, it is unlikely the Republican governor who has taken a hard anti-tax line in prior state budgets will propose raising taxes in his next budget plan next month, said H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state finance department

“I wouldn’t bet the rent money on seeing a tax increase,”
    Palmer told Reuters.

Schwarzenegger and aides are putting the finishing touches on an infrastructure bond plan and details likely would not be disclosed before the governor’s state-of-the-state speech on January 5, Palmer said.

The governor has suggested $50 billion as a possible amount for a bond package. It would include a mix of financing options but not tax increases as some have urged, according to Palmer.

“Where we have a difference with them is with the need for a tax increase,” Palmer said.

California Alliance for Jobs, which represents heavy construction firms and their union employees, proposed on Wednesday that a bond plan raise the state’s sales tax by a quarter-cent to finance $20 billion in debt to upgrade and expand the state’s infrastructure.

California could spend more than $100 billion in improving its transportation network alone, according to the group.

The state’s levees, ports and public buildings also are in desperate need of upgrades, according to Schwarzenegger and top lawmakers, who earlier this year agreed infrastructure would be a top priority for the 2006 legislative session.

“We feel that a quarter-cent sales tax as part of a mechanism to finance these improvements based on our research would be supported by the voters if it’s a sound plan,” said Jim Earp, executive director of California Alliance for Jobs.

California infrastructure has been neglected in the past decades and taxes raised to make incremental changes have been diverted by the Democrat controlled legislature to pay for education, pension and social service spending.

California needs new freeways, light rail and other transportation improvements. The waterways including levees need to be upgraded to better withstand earthquakes and future population increases.

If the Governor can complete the existing infrastructure projects already approved and infuse new bond money for new projects without a general tax increase he will make many friends with California voters.

    Stay tuned……
