Samuel Alito Watch: FILIBUSTER?
Judge Samuel Alito, left, meets with Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., on Capitol Hill Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, to discuss Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court. The Senate vote on the nomination is expected next week.
AFP: Top Democrats move to block Bush high court nominee
Leading Democrat Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy said they would try to block Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito by preventing a vote on him with a filibuster.
Former presidential candidate Kerry announced from Switzerland that he wanted to block President George W. Bush’s conservative nominee with the stalling tactic to prevent “an ideological coup” on the high court.
“Judge Alito will take America backward, especially when it comes to civil rights and discrimination laws,” Kerry said is a statement.
Kennedy, Kerry’s fellow Massachusetts senator, also called for a filibuster on Alito when the Senate is called to vote, probably early next week.
“We owe it to future generations of Americans to oppose this nomination. If Judge Alito is confirmed … the progress of half a century on the basic rights of all Americans is likely to be rolled back.”
In a statement, Democratic leaders said that Kerry was lobbying fellow senators in hopes of being able to round up the 41 votes needed to successfully prevent the Senate from holding a final up-or-down confirmation vote on Alito.
But…….
Flap counts more than 60 Senators who will vote for cloture…….
ASSociated Press: Republicans Clear the Way for Alito Vote
Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito enjoys sufficient bipartisan support to surmount any Senate filibuster attempt by minority Democrats, members of both parties indicated Friday.
Democrats and Republicans both said that the 55-year-old conservative jurist will get more than the 60 votes needed to cut off debate on the Senate floor Monday. “Next Tuesday, a bipartisan majority will vote to confirm Judge Alito as Justice Alito,” said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
Alito’s supporters already have those commitments, with 52 of the Republicans’ 55-member majority and three Democrats — Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Tim Johnson of South Dakota and Ben Nelson of Nebraska — already publicly supporting his confirmation as the replacement for retiring Justice
Sandra Day O’Connor. In addition, Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Ken Salazar of Colorado and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota — as well as GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe (news, bio, voting record) of Maine — made it clear after a second day of floor debate on Alito that they would not support a filibuster, even though Akaka and Salazar oppose Alito and the others are undecided.
Looks like the LEFTIES wimped out…….
Stay tuned……..

Iran Nuclear Watch: Warming to Russian Compromise Proposal
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council speaks at a press conference at the Iranian embassy in Beijing. US President George W. Bush gave public backing to a Russian compromise plan to end the Iran nuclear dispute but the United States is not easing efforts to refer Iran to the UN Security Council.
Reuters: China and Iran warm to Russian nuclear proposal
China and Iran expressed support on Thursday for a Russian proposal to resolve Tehran’s standoff with Western governments which suspect it of secretly planning to build a nuclear bomb.
Top Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, on a one-day trip to Beijing to seek China’s support, said the Russian proposal — that Iran’s uranium fuel be enriched on Russian soil rather than in Iran — needed further discussion.
Tehran has previously shown little interest in the idea, intended to ensure it does not covertly divert enriched fuel toward a weapons program. It has repeatedly insisted it has no plans to build bombs but has the right to enrich uranium fuel on its territory for nuclear power generation.
“The Russian suggestion is a useful one, but needs to be discussed further,” Larijani told a Beijing news conference.
And President Bush endorses the Russian compromise proposal:
U.S. President George W. Bush described how the arrangement would work: “The material used to power the plant would be manufactured in Russia, delivered under IAEA inspectors to Iran, to be used in that plant, the waste of which will be picked up by the Russians and returned to Russia.
“I think that is a good plan,” Bush told a news conference. “The Russians came up with the idea and I support it.”
But he said Iran had shown by its actions that it wanted a nuclear weapon. “And it’s not in the world’s interests that they have a weapon,” he added.
Is the President of the United States calling Iran’s BLUFF?
Stay tuned…….

Samuel Alito Watch: Byrd and Johnson Break Ranks to Support Confirmation
Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) is seen in Washington in an undated file photo. Johnson broke ranks on Thursday and announced he would vote to confirm President Bush’s nomination of conservative federal appeals judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.
ASSociated Press: More Democrats Get Behind Alito Nomination
Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito picked up two new Democratic supporters alongside liberal critics Thursday, and Republicans began calling for the Senate to end its debate and vote to confirm him.
“Senate Democrats should stop their foot-dragging on the vote for Judge Alito to become Justice Alito,” said Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee. Democrats Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Tim Johnson of South Dakota announced their support for the conservative judge.
Byrd and Johnson break party ranks but the vote Yea continues below 60.
Will the other Democrats have the intestinal fortitude to filibuster and withstand the wrath of the Gang of 14 and/or Nuclear Option?
The New York Times certainly has called them out………
Stay tuned……debate should end soon….. or will it?

Iran Watch: Iran Blames U.S. and Britain for Bombings
Iranian bank employees worker, search for ducuments at the Saman Bank in the city of Ahvaz, Iran, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, where a bomb exploded, Tuesday . The death toll in a pair of bombings on Tuesday rose to nine dead with more than 46 wounded in Ahvaz, a city in southwestern Iran with a history of violence involving members of Iran’s Arab minority, Iranian state media reported.
ASSociated Press: Iran Blames U.S., Britain for Bombings
Iran’s president on Wednesday blamed “the occupiers of Iraq” — inferring the United States and Britain — for two bombings that killed at least nine people in the southwestern city of Ahvaz.
The foreign minister said the bombers were supported by the British military, which is based in southern Iraq. Ahvaz has a history of violence involving members of Iran’s Arab minority.
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s office called the allegations “ludicrous.” A group seeking independence for the Ahvaz region later claimed responsibility.
State television said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad issued a decree ordering his foreign minister and intelligence minister to investigate the possibility that “foreign hands” were responsible for Tuesday’s blasts inside a bank and outside a state environmental agency building. Forty-six people were wounded, the official Islamic Republic News Agency has reported.
“Traces of the occupiers of Iraq is evident in the Ahvaz events. They should take responsibility in this regard,” state television quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

ASSociated Press: Iran Welcomes Russian Nuclear Offer

Chief negotiator Ali Larijani also reiterated Iran’s threat to renew enrichment activities if it is referred to the
U.N. Security Council.Moscow has proposed having Iran’s uranium enriched in Russia, then returned to Iran for use in the country’s reactors — a compromise that could provide more oversight and ease tensions with the United States and
European Union over Iran’s nuclear program.“Our view of this offer is positive, and we tried to bring the positions of the sides closer,” Larijani said a day after talks with Russian Security Council chief Igor Ivanov, which included discussion of the plan. “This plan can be perfected in the future, during further talks that will be held in February.”
More stalling………good grief……..
A British Foreign Office official, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said foreign ministers from the five permanent U.N. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of a donors’ conference on
Afghanistan.State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was expected to use the Afghan meeting to hold discussions with key nations on Iran’s nuclear program.
