AP: Giuliani off the mark on grocery costs

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani hasn’t done a lot of grocery shopping lately — at least based on his answers about the cost of milk and bread.

This is a biased conclusion based on what?

Flap goes grocery shopping every two weeks with the wife and frankly I do not know what the costs of milk, eggs or bread are. I do know that a 12 pack of Diet Orange Soda is 3 for $10.00.

Flap’s bet is that most husbands do not know the every day costs of basic commodities.

Campaigning in Alabama on Tuesday, the former New York City mayor portrayed himself as a fiscal conservative and an aggressive fighter of terrorism who has a lot in common with the Deep South state.

But when asked about more mundane matters — like the price of some basic staples — Giuliani had trouble with a reporter’s question.

“A gallon of milk is probably about a $1.50, a loaf of bread about a $1.25, $1.30,” he said.

A check of the Web site for D’Agostino supermarket on Manhattan’s Upper East Side showed a gallon of milk priced at $4.19 and a loaf of white bread at $2.99 to $3.39. In Montgomery, Ala., a gallon of milk goes for about $3.39 and bread is about $2.

Giuliani was closer to the mark on the price of a gallon of gasoline.

“Gas, I think, is $2.89,” he said

Flap does know the price of gasoline since I purchase it on a commuting week frequently. Today gas in Santa Barbara County was $3.55 per gallon.

But, what is the point of this story?

It is a set-up to embarass the Mayor as one who is detached from the common American.

Well, this is BULL.

As I said before most men/husbands could not tell you on a daily basis what the prices of groceries are.

And Flap challenges AP reporter PHILLIP RAWLS to go out and sample 50 men in California, Alabama, New York City or wherever and ask them on video tape the same questions and see how divergent and/or accurate the answers REALLY are.

The Gallup Poll: Giuliani Leads GOP Field; McCain Support Down in Latest Trial Heat

The latest Gallup Poll of rank-and-file Republicans’ preferences for their party’s 2008 presidential nomination shows Rudy Giuliani continues to lead the large field of candidates. John McCain continues to place second, but with his lowest level of support to date. Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich tie for third place.

Of the leading candidates, Giuliani is rated the most positively by Republicans and by all Americans. McCain’s image is also mostly positive. Gingrich has a positive image among Republicans but a negative one among the general population, while Thompson and Mitt Romney are largely unknown.

Without Gingrich in the race:

If Gingrich were to stay out of the race, his support would likely be spread among the leading candidates, roughly in proportion to their existing votes, based on an analysis of Gingrich’s supporters’ second choice. Giuliani would be the top choice of 42% of Republicans after Gingrich votes are factored out, with McCain at 18%, Thompson at 12%, and Romney at 7% under this scenario.

Giuliani has also maintained a steady lead over McCain in a one-on-one matchup of the top two candidates, with a 57% to 38% edge in the latest poll.

A very good poll for Hizzoner. Rudy is recovering from his slide of a week ago and nobody is catching fire – not even Fred Thompson.

Rasmussen Reports: 2008 Republican Presidential Primary

Romney Passes Gingrich, but Remains Fourth in Polls Despite Fundraising Success

Mitt Romney topped the GOP field in the fund-raising race for the first quarter and moved past former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the race for the Republican nomination. However, while ahead in cash, the former Governor of Massachusetts remains fourth in the polls. The top three positions are unchanged this week with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 27%, Arizona Senator John McCain at 16%, and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson at 14%. Those figures are virtually unchanged from a week ago.

Romney is back in double digits at 12% and that’s his best poll performance of the season. Gingrich falls back to 8%, his weakest performance in the polls this year.

While Giuliani is still on top, his support is down dramatically from two weeks ago. Not only that, his favorables have tumbled from the stratosphere to 58% (still the highest of any Presidential candidate, but down from 71% in December). Also, Giuliani has lost his leads in general election match-ups with the top three Democrats in the field. America’s Mayor is essentially tied with New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama Giuliani has fallen behind former North Carolina Senator John Edwards.

This is the second weak with Fred Thompson included in the polling and Rudy has stabilized with a continued double digit lead. However, this poll was taken prior to the revelation that Thompson has flip-flopped on the abortion issue.

Romney is polling better but is it at the expense of Newt Gingrich who continues to remain an unannounced candidate?
