Global War on Terror Watch: Hugh Hewitt Vs. Eric Lichtblau on CNN Reliable Sources
Expose The Left: Hewitt Takes On Lichtblau, NY Times: ‘Story Helped Terrorists Elude Capture’ (VIDEO)
Conservative Hugh Hewitt appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources, opposite of a liberally stacked panel, which included Eric Lichtblau of the New York Times, Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post, and Geneva Overholser from the U. of Missouri School of Journalism.
Even though he was outnumbered, Hewitt did manage to fight it out with Lichtblau, who refuses to appear on his nationally syndicated radio talk show. Hugh expressed the sentiment most Americans seem to feel; that what was done helped the terrorists. Moderator Howard Kurtz calls this thinking a “political attack†on the New York Times, however doesn’t think to mention that this was a “political attack†on the administration.

Ian has a full transcript here.
Since this program was taped a few days ago it appears the MSM has coalesced around a “company line.” This line of defense is: All of the terrorists knew about this program anyway.
But, then the reader has to ask: Why publish a story everyone knew about on the front page of the New York and Los Angeles Times?
Does the MSM seem a little disingenious when called on the carpet for a bad call?
You betcha…..
Hugh Hewitt last week calls Eric Lichtblau out:
He declines interviews with me, but agrees to CNN and NPR.
He’s making money off of his “scoops.”
His reporting while in California was critized as deeply dishonest and partisan, especially with regards to Congressman Darrell Issa’s campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1998.
And Lichtblau’s been waging a “war against the war” since 2002. (More here and here.)
And why won’t Lichtblau or Bill Keller be interviewed by non-MSM press? Doyle McManus, Washington Bureau Chief of the Los Angeles times had the guts to go on Hewitt’s radio program last week (listen to the interview here). And he revealed some interesting facts of how and why the Los Angeles Times reached their decision to publish this story. Why not Keller and Lichtblau? Is it beneath you?
The MSM wagons are certainly circling around to defend the New York and Los Angeles Times on First Amendment grounds. It is obvious by polling data and blog traffic that they are smarting (circulation, advertising, public opinion) from their bad decision to reveal classified secrets for a program according to Lichtblau and Keller about which every terrorist knew or should have known.
The New York Times cannot have a “scoop” and then next week when it is no longer in vogue or they face intense criticism say no it wasn’t. And why not?
How do you spell HYPOCRISY?

New York Times: When Do We Publish a Secret?
SINCE Sept. 11, 2001, newspaper editors have faced excruciating choices in covering the government’s efforts to protect the country from terrorist agents. Each of us has, on a number of occasions, withheld information because we were convinced that publishing it could put lives at risk. On other occasions, each of us has decided to publish classified information over strong objections from our government.
Last week our newspapers disclosed a secret Bush administration program to monitor international banking transactions. We did so after appeals from senior administration officials to hold the story. Our reports — like earlier press disclosures of secret measures to combat terrorism — revived an emotional national debate, featuring angry calls of “treason” and proposals that journalists be jailed along with much genuine concern and confusion about the role of the press in times like these.
Bill Keller and Dean Baquet MUST be feeling the heat in order for these elitists to pen this response. Keller took the heat from a fellow MSM publication, the Wall Street Journal yesterday. Read the WSJ’s piece, Fit and Unfit to Print here.
The WSJ piece lays out in plain English the duties of the Press:
“Not everything is fit to print. There is to be regard for at least probable factual accuracy, for danger to innocent lives, for human decencies, and even, if cautiously, for nonpartisan considerations of the national interest.”
Fox News has a new poll which shows strong public support for the U.S. Treasury Department’s SWIFT Bank Data Anti-Terror Program:
The poll shows there is strong support for the Treasury Department program tracking financial transactions in search of terrorist funding. Seven of 10 Americans support the program, including majorities of Republicans (83 percent), independents (67 percent) and Democrats (58 percent).
And the same poll shows overwhelming belief that the New York and Los Angeles Times did more to help the terrorists by publishing information about the SWIFT Program than the public.
The Bush administration asked the New York Times not to publish information about the secret program, but the newspaper went ahead because it felt it was in the public interest to do so. By publishing the story, a 60 percent majority thinks the Times did more to help terrorist groups than the public (27 percent).
Allah has the graphics of the poll results here.
And the second poll – note well the Independent voter totals…..
The PDF of the poll is here.
Back to Keller’s and Baquet’s Op-Ed piece:
After paragraph upon paragraph about the Pentagon Papers, the right of the public to know, banal apologia, finally, this:
Finally, we weigh the merits of publishing against the risks of publishing. There is no magic formula, no neat metric for either the public’s interest or the dangers of publishing sensitive information. We make our best judgment…..
We understand that honorable people may disagree with any of these choices — to publish or not to publish. But making those decisions is the responsibility that falls to editors, a corollary to the great gift of our independence. It is not a responsibility we take lightly. And it is not one we can surrender to the government.
These jokers made a bad call to publish the information about the SWIFT Progam. The MSM and its bias makes biased/prejudiced calls all of the time and the public is getting sick of it – note the decrease in circulation of newspapers, particularly the Los Angeles Times.
The House of Representatives on Friday passed H. Res. 895 condemning the New York and Los Angeles Times, even though it did not mention them by name.
As long as Editors like Keller and Baquet put their OWN self-interests above that of the public, the public will vote with their feet and leave (with circulation and decreased advertising dollars).
Baquet and Keller are “rogue journalists” and the United States Department of Justice should open investigations into the government employees who leaked the information to their newspapers. Keller, Baquet, Risen, Lichtblau, McManus should be subpoenaed to reveal their sources.
And when they refuse, held in contempt of court.
For as the public knows, newspaper editors/reporters are NOT above the law.

Global War on Terror Watch: House Resolution 895 Passes 227-183
House of Representatives: H. Res. 895:
supporting intelligence and law enforcement programs to track terrorists and terrorist finances conducted consistent with Federal law and with appropriate Congressional consultation and specifically condemning the disclosure and publication of classified information that impairs the international fight against terrorism and needlessly exposes Americans to the threat of further terror attacks by revealing a crucial method by which terrorists are traced through their finances.
The roll call is here: (Roll no. 357).
The resolution is real “WEAK SAUCE” and does not NAME NAMES but it clearly defines the partisan divide between the GOP and Democrats.
Flap listened to the debate and it was weak too, especially the GOP who let Barney Frank, D-MA make too many unanswered points.
Perhaps some in the GOP do NOT wish to offend the New York Times and prefer to be invited to the “TRENDY” media parties and to be interviewed by the New York and Los Angeles Times editorial boards.
Hugh Hewitt is RIGHT to be outraged.
On H. Res. 895 the GOP WIMPED OUT.

Global War on Terror Watch: House Resolution 895 – Redux
A pedestrian passes the New York Times building in April 2006 in New York City.
Washington Post: Bush Seeks to Use Media Leaks to His AdvantagePresident Bush rallied Republicans with another attack on the media last night, in remarks that highlighted efforts at the White House and on Capitol Hill to gain momentum from recent disclosures about classified programs to fight terrorism.
Senior administration officials say the president was outraged by articles in the New York Times and other newspapers about a surveillance program in which the U.S. government has tapped international banking records for information about terrorist financing. But his comments at a Republican fundraiser in a St. Louis suburb yesterday, combined with new moves by GOP congressional leaders, showed how both are working to fan public anger and reap gains from the controversy during a midterm election year in which polls show they are running against stiff headwinds.
The Washington Post can spin the public’s outrage with the press on the disclosure of the secret SWIFT progam any way it wishes, but, the outrage is real and originates not by the President but by the public/voters. The House will introduce, debate and vote on House Resolution 895 today.
The text of the resolution is here.
The GOP resolution, sponsored by Rep. Michael G. Oxley (Ohio), also states that “the disclosure of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program has unnecessarily complicated efforts by the United States Government to prosecute the war on terror and may have placed the lives of Americans in danger both at home and in many regions of the world.” It “condemns the unauthorized disclosure of classified information by those persons responsible and expresses concern that the disclosure may endanger the lives of American citizens.”
The resolution does not name the New York and Los Angels Times. However, the strategy of the House GOP appears to make the Democrats go on the record against illegal leaks of classified material and side with the New York and Los Angeles Times or President Bush’s and the GOP’s criticism. A wedge vote that WILL be used in the Fall House elections.
The Democrats are already backing away from criticism of the press but instead resumed its attacks on President Bush and the GOP.
“This is all so people don’t realize what else is going on,” especially in Iraq, said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), who is heading his party’s efforts to regain control of the House in the November elections. “This is disingenuous of both the White House and House Republicans.”
US President George W. Bush gestures as he speaks during a fundraiser for the re-election campaign of Sen. Jim Talent , R-MO, at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton, MO. Bush said Wednesday that there was “no excuse” for news accounts last week that gave details of a secret program to track and disrupt terrorism financing
Hugh Hewitt has The House Should Defeat H.R. 895. Maybe the Senate Will Represent the People?
The question before the Congress, the one on which the House –inexplicably, and to the shame of the GOP majority there, has apparently punted– is did the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times injure the war effort by assisting terrorists in avoiding capture?
All the rest is posturing.
The resolutions in both House and Senate are being brought forward because of the stories from Friday.
Not referencing the stories is clearly understood by observors to be an acknowledgment that these papers are privileged in a way soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are not: They get to make mistakes, and not be called to account.
If the House and Senate don’t call them to account, and with specificity, these papers and others will repeat their behaviors.
I just don’t see how a civilian could vote for a non-specific resolution and look a military man or woman –or the family of one of the fallen– in the eye and say: “We spoke for you. We voted a non-specific resolution of condemnation of various behaviors that might hurt the war effort and lead to the escape of terrorists from justice.”
What a horrible joke. What an insult to the military. What a terrible insult to the fallen.
The House should defeat Resolution 895, and its serious members demand a real rebuke to the scribblers who endanger the effort.
And the United States Senate should not commit a similar error.
202-224-3121.
Flap agrees with Hugh that H. Res. 895 is “WEAK SAUCE.” Is this the best the House can do?
NOPE
Should the resolution be defeated?
NOPE
The resolution is better than NOTHING – but not much better.
The debate will be lively and interesting to see if the Democrats concur or take up the sword for the New York Times.
Stay tuned …….
Patterico weighs in with Support House Resolution 895Â
Flap would vote for the resolution but it IS “weak sauce” and misses the point on condemning the egregiously disgraceful conduct by the New York and Los Angeles Times. Bill Keller and Dean Baquet have made poor judgment calls and this resolution will not hold them accountable.
But, Flap likes the idea of making the Democrats vote against their ideological friends in the MSM – if they dare.

Global War on Terror Watch: House Resolution 895
Hugh Hewitt: Congressman Oxley’s Resolution
Congressman Michael Oxley, Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, is said to be poised to introduce a resolution on the Times Two stories assisting the terrorists in eluding capture.
Let’s hope it is as tough as Sgt. Boggs’ letter.
Who will step up in the senate?
The resolution is now up on the House Rules Committee Page: H.Res 895 and can be viewed here.
Read it ALL……
Weak sauce and pathetic.
And it does not even mention the New York or Los Angeles Times.
Congressman David Dreier, Chairman of the House Rules Committee and Congressman Oxley should be ashamed of themselves.
Flap said yesterday that Senator Pat Roberts needed some COJONES. The same applies to Representatives Dreier and Oxley.
Give them a phone call.
David Dreier: 202 225-2305
Michael Oxley: 202 225-2676
Call your Congressman/woman. The House telephone directory is here.
Tell them to condemn the New York and Los Angeles Times for betraying America’s national security.
Tell your representative to NAME NAMES.
Flap has already called Representatives David Dreier and Elton Gallegly, my Congressman.
Call them……..
From N.Z. Bear, a suggestion: Rewrite the resolution and send us both the new language.
Better yet: Call Speaker Hastert and Majority Leader Boehner and tell them to give us a real resolution tomorrow or ask them why not?
Speaker Hastert: 202 225-2976
Majority Leader Boehner: 202 225-6205
Call them!
Speaker Hastert said today, “Loose lips kill American people”
Declaring that “loose lips” kill Americans, a top congressional Republican leader said on Wednesday the House of Representatives would debate a resolution condemning the U.S. media for exposing details of secret intelligence programs.
The move heaps more criticism on The New York Times and other newspapers that reported last week on a secret program by the U.S. Treasury Department that monitors private bank records in an effort to track terrorist organizations.
“What we’re talking about is people who are leaking classified information. It’s not news. It’s classified information our government is using to fight terrorists,” said House Speaker Dennis Hastert, of Illinois.
“Loose lips kill American people,” he added.
A floor vote is scheduled for Thursday, said a spokesman for House Majority Leader John Boehner.
Call Speaker Hastert and Majority Leader Boehner tomorrow. Tell them you want a resolution the names the New York and Los Angeles Times in the body of the resolution. INSIST ON IT!

Global War on Terror Watch: Michael Gerson Shames Media for Revealing SWIFT Anti-Terror Program
President Bush and “Wordsmith” Michael Gerson
The Examiner: Bush advisor shames media for revealing anti-terror program
A top adviser to President Bush said Wednesday that poor judgment, not liberal bias, caused the New York Times to reveal anti-terrorism programs, for which the paper should be ashamed.
“It’s not a matter of liberal bias – it’s a matter of judgment,” Michael Gerson told The Examiner in his West Wing office. “Everyone in our society, including the press, has a responsibility to the public good, to the public interest.
Flap agrees in part. Bill Keller of the New York Times is a biased lefty MSM hack and because of his inherent distrust of politicians including President Bush exhibited extremely poor judgment in publishing the story.
“And I know that there are many reporters in this town, and many news organizations, that would be very hesitant about running this story,” he added.
Gerson, best known as the author of Bush’s most memorable speeches, was referring to last week’s disclosure of a program to track international financial transfers by suspected terrorists. The Times first published the story, prompting the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times to follow suit.
Earlier this year, the Times also published a story exposing a Bush administration program to track the international phone calls of terrorism suspects. Administration officials say such disclosures have undermined the war against terror.
“Even in the elite media, even in what people regard as the liberal media, there is a sense of restraint on issues like this, in many places,” Gerson said on his last day on the job. “That should maybe shame the people who don’t share it.”
Flap wishes Gerson well in his new life outside of the government – even though he is WRONG on this assessment of the New York Times and Bill Keller.

Global War on Terror Watch: Piling on the New York Times?
Washington Post: Piling On the New York Times With a ScoopStory on Secret Program Further Rouses CriticsPresident Bush calls the conduct of the New York Times “disgraceful.” Vice President Cheney objects to the paper having won a Pulitzer Prize. A Republican congressman wants the Times prosecuted. National Review says its press credentials should be yanked. Radio commentator Tammy Bruce likens the paper to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.Even by modern standards of media-bashing, the volume of vitriol being heaped upon the editors on Manhattan’s West 43rd Street is remarkable — especially considering that the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal also published accounts Friday of a secret administration program to monitor the financial transactions of terror suspects. So, in its later editions, did The Washington Post.
And so Howard Kurtz begins his “weak sauce” rationale for the New York Times disgraceful conduct on publishing the details of the SWIFT Bank Data Anti-Terror Program.
For a media critic, Kurtz in his opening paragraphs fails to distinguish between the egregiously anti-American conduct of the New York and Los Angeles Times and his own paper including the Wall Street Journal. Patterico has a good common sense discussion of the obvious differences here. Kurtz should take a look but does he want to understand?
Times Executive Editor Bill Keller said in an interview yesterday that critics “are still angry at us” for disclosing the government’s domestic eavesdropping program in December, “and I guess in their view, this adds insult to injury. . . . The Bush administration’s reaction roused their base, but also roused the anti-Bush base as well,” he said, noting an approximately even split in his e-mail.
Bill Keller and the New Yoirk times should NOT have published the expose on the NSA Surveillance Program either. This program was another secret program to protect Americans. Is there any secret or classified program that Bill Keller and/or the New York Times will not print?
Flap has the answer: The Muhammad Cartoons
With regards to an anti-Bush base and their correspondence, who from the Democrat Left has criticized the President for the SWIFT Program. They have not. They are laying low and are silent. What is Keller talking about? The Kossaks?
Still, Keller added, “a lot of people have legitimate and genuine feelings about this, and I don’t mean to belittle that.”
This means a whole bunch of folks are cancelling their subscriptions and Keller wants them back. Flap bets they are losing some advertisers as well. Why? Dead Americans from a terrorist attack usually do not buy products advertised in the newspaper.
Keller said he spent more than an hour in late May listening to Treasury Secretary John Snow argue against publication of the story. He said that he also got a call from Negroponte, the national intelligence czar, and that three former officials also made the case to Times editors: Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton, chairmen of the 9/11 commission, and Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania — an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq.
“The main argument they made to me, extensively and at length, besides that the program is valuable and legitimate, was that there are a lot of banks that are very sensitive to public opinion, and if this sees the light of day, they may stop cooperating,” Keller said.
He acknowledged, as did the Times article, that there was no clear evidence that the banking program was illegal. But, he said, “there were officials who talked to us who were uncomfortable with the legality of this program, and others who were uncomfortable with the sense that what started as a temporary program had acquired a kind of permanence.
So, the anonymous sources (officials) were uncomfortable with the legality of the program and its permanence but a bi-partisan group of government and former government officials are not and who does Keller find pursuasive? Yet Keller acknowledges that there is NO clear evidence that the SWIFT program is illegal. And why did he publish?
Was it a SCOOP? Was it dreams of another Pulitzer Prize?
Graphic Courtesy of Michelle Malkin“I always start with the premise that the question is, why should we not publish? Publishing information is our job. What you really need is a reason to withhold information.”
There is the answer to Flap’s previous question. The New York Times has NO SHAME. Like the true “Yellow Journalism” rag of William Randolf Hearst they will print ANYTHING – that suits the business or personal interests of the newspaper. America and Americans be DAMNED.
Well, Americans can do something…….
STOP BUYING THEIR NEWSPAPER AND ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS.Hugh Hewitt has The Times Two Meltdown, Cont.
Howard Kurtz atetmpts to rally some sympathy for the Times Two, and unfortunately stumbles into the Bay of Pigs Club, from which exit is almost impossible. Once you buy into the use of a “might have been” (and a mightily mischaracterized one at that) to justify the publication of secrets that could help terrorists elude capture, there’s no argument left because the “Bay of Pigs” mantra is an appeal to fiction, not to fact or history.
No major media outlet in the United States has ever knowingly, and over the objection of the United States government, ever published classified information that could assist the nation’s enemies. Period. What the New York Times has done –and the Los Angeles Times copied– is without precedent, which is why a Congressional response is so necessary, and hopefully forthcoming soon.
Kurtz notes that “[m]ost Democratic lawmakers, meanwhile, lay low,” adding that “Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid sidestepped a question yesterday about whether the Times should be prosecuted.”
In fact, lawmakers of both parties are for the most part “laying low,” and that is not distinguishing them in the eyes of the public interested in seriousness about the war.
If it is a war -and it is– and if the disclosures helped our enemies –and they did– Congress should draft, debate and vote on resolutions condemning the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times by name.
Patterico via See-Dubya comment:
From Howard Kurtz’s column on how we partisan meanies are vilifying the poor New York Times for doing their job comes this gem from NYT editor Bill Keller:
“I always start with the premise that the question is, why should we not publish? Publishing information is our job. What you really need is a reason to withhold information.â€
Hmmm…how about, oh, because it’s against the f—-ing law, jackwipe.
Does he not understand that it is illegal to disseminate classified information? Does that word mean something different in New York?
Michelle Malkin says that this is not the first time that the New York Times has aided and abetted terrorist organizations and has a list of New York Times advertisers to express displeasure. A protest in front of the New York Times is being organized.
Stay tuned for House and Senate resolutions condemning the New York and Los Angeles Times. And hearings should be scheduled?

Global War on Terror Watch: GOP House Leadership to Introduce Resolution Condemning New York Times for Publishing the Secret Details of SWIFT Bank Data Anti-Terrorism Program
Graphic courtesy of Michelle Malkin
Roll Call: GOP bill targets NY Times
House Republican leaders are expected to introduce a resolution today condemning The New York Times for publishing a story last week that exposed government monitoring of banking records.
The resolution is expected to condemn the leak and publication of classified documents, said one Republican aide with knowledge of the impending legislation.
The resolution comes as Republicans from the president on down condemn media organizations for reporting on the secret government program that tracked financial records overseas through the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT), an international banking cooperative.
This resolution should have been introduced today. A resolution revoking the New York Times’ Press credentials trivializes the disgraceful conduct of the New York and Los Angeles Times. However, a resolution condemning these newspapers for an egregious breach of the public trust is a different matter. A censure resolution of both newspapers would be the most appropriate.
Also, the Senate and House Intelligence Committees should call for hearings and subpoena Bill Keller, Dean Baquet, Eric Lichtblau and James Risen to testify and reveal the government sources of the leaked SWIFT Program.
Hugh Hewitt has Congressional Indifference to Newspaper Assistance to Terrorists
Look, the flag amendment presents an interesting debate, but the national security does not turn on its fate.
Last week’s Senate resolution and the House resolution the week before mattered a great deal, but their effect is being reduced by inaction by the House and Senate on the real damage done by the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.
So, where’s the leadership, the draft resolutions, the debate and the vote? What’s the plan? A letter from Chairman Roberts is great, but it isn’t the First Branch speaking to the Fourth, which is what needs to happen. Soon.
Looks like Hugh will get his request…….
Stay tuned……
