CA-26 Video: California State Senator Tony Strickland Announces His Candidacy for Congress

Tony Strickland and his family, including former California Assemblywoman Audra Strickland

California State Senator Tony Strickland is in the race for CA-26.

    From the press release:

Surrounded by family and supporters, State Senator Tony Strickland today announced his campaign for Congress in an event at the Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum.

I remember the most important lesson my father taught me: that it’s the duty for every generation to leave their community in a better place than they found it, said Strickland. And that’s why I’m asking to become your next Congressman.

I expect the campaign ahead to be spirited but I’m committed to uniting our community; Republicans, Democrats, and Independents behind policies that create jobs and economic opportunity for those struggling to make ends meet.

Strickland also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong national defense and developing alternative energy sources.

Send me to Congress, and I’ll stand up to those who want to weaken our military and threaten our defense related jobs, he continued.

Dependence on foreign energy sources makes our energy prices vulnerable and too reliant on unstable and sometimes hostile foreign regimes. We can no longer afford to fund both sides of a war. Energy independence is truly a national security issue, he added.

Strickland announced at the Aviation Museum at the Camarillo Airport before a group of 100 or so supporters and Ventura County political activists. He joins previously announced candidates, Ventura County Supervisors Steve Bennett and Linda Parks, Oxnard Harbor District Commissioner Jess Herrera, Moorpark City Councilman David Pollock, retired longshoreman Zeke Ruelas of Oxnard and businessman David Cruz Thayne of Westlake Village.

The seat is being vacated by long-time incumbent Congressman Elton Gallegly who has announced his retirement.

CA-26: California State Senator Tony Strickland to Run for Congress

Republican State Senator Tony Strickland and wife Audra, a former California Assemblywoman

I was actually informed about this announcement a number of days ago, but was asked to embargo the announcement until Monday. Obviously, there was a change of plans to “leak” the announcement by the Strickland Campaign.

    So, here is the announcement.

Sen. Tony Strickland, who represents western portions of the Santa Clarita Valley in the California Senate, has scheduled a press conference to announce his candidacy for Congress.

Strickland’s campaign announcement is calendared for Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, at the Aviation Museum in Camarillo.

I don’t why there is a hurry to announce, but it could be that politics in Ventura County is becoming like musical chairs. The filing deadline is March 9.

First, there is the rumor that Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman will move to run in the new CA-26. This will avoid a nasty June primary election against Democrat Rep. Howard Berman.

Then, there is former Democratic Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg who has said (more or less) that he is running in Tony Strickland’s California State Senate District where another Democrat State Senator Fran Pavley (Agoura Hills) will be the incumbent.

So, Strickland will announce, but I hear that local Republicans are worried that Strickland might not be able to beat Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks who is going to run as an independent (where in the past she has been a registered Republican). Some have suggested that Parks may re-register as a Democrat.

Other sources have told me that the Ventura County Public Employee Unions are pressuring Ventura County Supervisor Steve Bennett to drop out of his previously announced decision to run in CA-26.

The unions and local Democrats are worried that Republican Ventura County Fire Chief Bob Roper would easily win Bennett’s seat, should Bennett vacate it to run for Congress. I guess the LEFT wants to protect Bennett’s seat and he has the campaign cash to do so. So, will Bennett withdraw?

In talking to a number of Republican and Democratic activists, it is clear that nobody is happy with the previously speculated big three candidacies of Strickland, Parks and Bennett.

I would not be surprised to see Rep. Brad Sherman to take a look at this race and I have heard Republicans are talking to Michael Reagan, the son of the former President.

So, it is all complicated. Plus, add in four other candidates (including two Hispanic Democrats from Oxnard) and the top two election system.

This race is going to be a whirlwind…..

    Stay tuned….

CA-26: Rep Elton Gallegly to Retire – Tony Strickland, Steve Bennett and Linda Parks to Run

I was in Santa Fe, New Mexico at a funeral when I received notice that long-time Republican Congressman and friend, Elton Gallegly was releasing that he was retiring.

When I was at Elton’s home a few weeks ago, I received the impression that this would be Elton’s choice. He did outlay the scenarios of re-election strategy, but I could see that his interests were elsewhere. He wants to start a new phase of his life – outside the Congress.

    And, who can blame him?

Now, who will seek the seat?

California State Senator Tony Strickland a conservative Republican has informally announced his candidacy, along with Democrat Ventura County Supervisor Steve Bennett (Ventura Ojai). Moderate Republican Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks who represents the Thousand Oaks and Oak Park area has also informally announced her candidacy.

Plus, there are some other lesser known Democrats: business man David Cruz-Thayne and Moorpark City Council member David Pollock.

Remember the June primary election will be a top two process – whether it be Democrats or Republicans. Therefore, it is possible that the two Republicans Linda Parks and Tony Strickland could be running in the November general election.

There will be a lot more later, since this seat will be one of the few contested California Congressional races this cycle.

California Senator Tony Strickland’s Bill SB 49 Would Prohibit Charging Out of Town Residents for Emergency Response

Way to go California – tax us twice.

In more than four dozen cities and counties across California, the question of how much being involved in a car accident will cost motorists depends on more than just the extent of the damages or whether anyone was injured. It also depends on where they live.

Out-of-towners get billed for the cost of sending firefighters to the scene; for locals, that service is covered as part of the local taxes they pay.

The fee is levied on out-of-town motorists regardless of who is at fault — even if an out-of-towner is involved in an accident in which a local driver is at fault.

The trend is being fueled by private collection firms that offer to handle the billing and collection for a percentage of the emergency response fees, and is promoted as a means for cash-strapped local governments to recover some of the costs for services they have traditionally provided as a basic element of public safety.

Critics call it a “crash tax” — and Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark, is out to put a stop to it.

Strickland has introduced legislation, SB 49, that would prohibit local agencies from “charging a fee to any person, regardless of residence, for the expense of an emergency response,” unless drunken driving, gross negligence or intentionally illegal conduct is involved.

“It’s nothing more than a double tax,” Strickland said, noting that local agencies are always eager to have out-of-towners visit or shop in their jurisdictions so that they can collect sales taxes and hotel bed taxes.

This legislation needs to pass and pass as an emergency measure so it takes effect when the Governor signs the bill.

    Why?

I’ll be driving through California on vacation and some truck or car hits me and causes an accident. They, however, live/work in the area and they go after me financially for the Fire Department response to the accident.

Nice. I get to pay taxes like everyone else to pay into the state, my county, my city. Yet, when I travel outside my cocoon and someone else causes an accident I get stuck with the bill.

    No way.

Here is the text of the bill:

BILL NUMBER: SB 49 INTRODUCED BILL

    TEXT INTRODUCED BY Senator Strickland

    DECEMBER 15, 2010

An act to add Section 53159.5 to the Government Code, relating to local government.

    LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SB 49, as introduced, Strickland. Local government: emergency response: fees.

Existing law authorizes public agencies, as defined, to hold liable any person who is under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, any drug, or the combination of an alcoholic beverage and any drug, whose negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a boat or vessel, or a civil aircraft caused by that influence proximately causes any incident resulting in an appropriate emergency response, and any person whose intentionally wrongful conduct proximately causes an incident resulting in an appropriate emergency response, for the expense of that emergency response.

This bill would prohibit a city, including a charter city, county, district, municipal corporation, or public authority from charging a fee to any person, regardless of residency, for the expense of an emergency response, as specified, except where a fee is otherwise authorized.

The bill would also express a legislative finding and declaration that the availability and use of emergency response resources throughout the state is an issue of statewide concern and not a municipal affair and that, therefore, all cities, including charter cities, would be subject to the provisions of the bill.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no. State-mandated local program: no.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Section 53159.5 is added to the Government Code, to read:

53159.5. (a) A city, including a charter city, county, district, municipal corporation, or public authority shall not, except as otherwise authorized by law, charge a fee to any person, regardless of residency, for the expense of an emergency response.

    (b) For purposes of this section, emergency response includes, but is not limited to, fire, police, or medical response.

SEC. 2. The Legislature finds and declares that the availability and use of emergency response resources throughout the state is an issue of statewide concern and not a municipal affair, as that term is used in Section 5 of Article XI of the California Constitution. Therefore, this act shall apply to all cities, including charter cities.

Tony Strickland to Play First Professional Basketball Game Tonight

    L_A__Tony

Flap had this before but tonight is the Los Angeles Lightning Debut of Thousand Oaks area California State Senator Tony Strickland.

Some on the LEFT are already mocking and trash-talking the middle aged California State Senator:

He hasn’t gotten around to meeting with the superintendents of education from this area but he is set to play Saturday night at CLU.

What are the chances local liberals will show up to get footage of any shots he misses to turn into an ad?

Tony Strickland, if you have time to twitter when you are practicing basketball you have time to twitter something classy about Michelle Obama to show how much you disagree with Tammy Bruce, who you called Michelle Obama trash before you shared a stage with that loudmouth.

I’m sure some PR person somewhere thought this was a good idea. Yeah, he’s getting press for it. But between this silly photo and the mere fact that all this basketball is surely taking his time away from the important business of the state, this is a big blunder.

This is soooooo wrong!!! Makes you wonder if he is being sabotagued politically from the inside or if he truly doesn’t have a grasp of what is good PR versus bad PR. Or maybe it is a diversion for some truly awful decisions made in the past.

Wonder if the Leftist activists/local Democrats will be there to protest, photograph or otherwise generally harass the pol? And,on a Saturday night, in his own district, on his leisure time?

How do you say, Get a LIFE?

By the way, the game is at 7PM on the California Lutheran University campus.

Senator Tony Strickland: Flood Control Legislation Earns Unanimous Support

    Senator Tony Strickland logo

    From the Press Release:

Senate Bill 619, authored by State Senator Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) and principally co-authored by Assemblyman Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara) which provides support for funding Santa Barbara County’s Lower Mission Creek flood control project, earned unanimous bipartisan, support in the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

“Santa Barbara County Residents are aware of the damage that a flood can do to their home and property. Local flooding as recent as 1995 and 1998 have left devastating effects on the surrounding community of Lower Mission Creek. SB 619 provides much needed support for crucial funding to the Lower Mission Creek flood control project. This important legislation will help save hundreds of homes from future flood damage,” said Senator Strickland.

SB 619 authorizes California to provide subvention funds to Santa Barbara County for the Lower Mission Creek flood control project. The flood control project has been an on going project for many years and is a joint effort between the City of Santa Barbara, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Santa Barbara County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The Lower Mission Creek flood control project stretches 1.3 miles from Cabrillo Boulevard at the ocean to Canon Perdido Street. The goal of the project is to widen the banks of the creek channel to increase water capacity. This will lead to a reduction in flooding and property damage done by floods.

Assemblymember Nava stated, “I am very pleased that SB 619 passed the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee this week. This is an important measure that will not only protect homes and property, but ultimately save lives in the City of Santa Barbara.”

Santa Barbara County’s Lower Mission Creek flood control project has also earned broad community support with several environmental benefits as well. For more information on Santa Barbara County’s Lower Mission Creek project please visit www.lowermissioncreek.com.

Proving once again that district priorities always trump partisan politics.

Senator Tony Strickland: Renewable Energy Legislation Clears First Hurdle

    Senator Tony Strickland logo

    From Today’s Press Release:

Senate Bill 463, authored by State Senator Tony Strickland’s (R-Thousand Oaks) which would create a tax credit for the purchase and installation of renewable energy resources, passed the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee. In addition, Senate Bill 542, Solar Energy & Energy Efficiency Programs, which Senator Strickland has joint-authored with Democratic Senator Pat Wiggins (D-Santa Rosa) passed the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee as well.

“I’m working with Democrats and Republicans to change California to a renewable energy economy to create jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, improve the environment, and lower energy prices. By focusing on legislation that promotes renewable, clean energy, we promote local businesses. When businesses grow, jobs multiply,” said Senator Tony Strickland.

Senate Bill 463, Renewable Energy Projects, would entitle a person to a one-time tax credit not to exceed $3,000, or equal to 30 percent of all costs for the purchase and installation of a renewable energy resource project.

Senate Bill 542 would add apartments, duplexes, and commercial rental properties into the California Solar Initiative and other energy efficiency programs to encourage the use of renewable energy.

“California is squeezed between an economic crisis and an energy crisis that requires us to fundamentally rethink how we do business. We need to offer tax credits and incentives for individuals and businesses that transition to renewable, clean energy. Senate Bills 463 and 542 will take us into the 21st century, and will help California become more energy-efficient,” said Senator Strickland.

Senate Bill 463 will now go to the revenue and taxation committee. Senate Bill 542 will go on to appropriations committee.

Strickland was oftern criticised during last November’s campaign as a hypocrite on renewable energy and other environmental issues. The Democrat LEFT has portrayed him as “FAKE GREEN” politician.

Today’s vote in the California Legislature will probably not mollify his critics and the bills have a way to go before they become law but to his voter constituency it is a start on delivering what he promised during the campaign.
