Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator John McCain

With the selection of Senator Joe Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate, the ball is now in John McCain’s court to name his Vice Presidential selection. The formal announcement will be made next Friday at a campaign event in Dayton, Ohio.

A name not previously mentioned in the conventional wisdom is former General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Colin Powell. There have been rumors that General Powell will be endorsing Barack Obama at the Democrat cnvention next week. But, Powell has already contributed the maximum to Team McCain.

Team McCain floated the notion of a pro-choice Vice Presidential selection last week and Powell is pro-choice on abortion. Of course, so are Tom Ridge, Joe Lieberman and Rudy Giuliani.

Now, there is this trial balloon floated at Politico.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Powell would be a good choice if the campaign began to focus on foreign policy and military issues but it is NOT. This campaign will be about domestic issues in key battleground states and gender politics.

John McCain would best consider Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal or Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
