Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Coming Home From China

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger samples a glass of Gallo wine from California, during a tour of a market in Hong Kong, Saturday Nov. 19, 2005. After the tour of the market the governor spoke at a rally to promote California’s products to conclude his six-day trade mission to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The ASSociated Press has Schwarzenegger Heads Home From China Trip

For Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose much-vaunted “year of reform” agenda was soundly beaten in a special election less than two weeks ago, a three-city trade mission in the Far East could not have come at a better time.

In his six days here, Schwarzenegger has been mobbed by paparazzi, strolled the red carpet at the Shanghai premiere of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and was quizzed by adoring students at China’s most elite university on his vision of the California dream.

Business leaders have gushed about the celebrity governor’s ability to open doors in China’s expanding global marketplace. Front page glamour shots of Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have been splashed across local English-language newspapers. And a competing trade mission headed by another Republican governor, Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, has been all but eclipsed by Schwarzenegger’s star wattage.

But political experts agree the governor’s road to political redemption runs through California, not China.

Arnold’s political rehabilitation is off to a good start.

Next on the agenda will be answering questions regarding his “rebuild” agenda for California infrastructure.

California economic projections have been good so partisan budgetary battles will take a backseat to political posturing of the two major Democrat candidates for Governor, Angelides and Westly.

Schwarzenegger has acknowlewdged his miscalculations of the special eldection, and his war with the California Nurses Assocaition is over…..

    Stay tuned……..

Where in the World is Flap Watch: 1st Moscone – Schmitz Blogger Congeniality Dinner

    Armed Liberal has Moscone-Schmitz Dinner

A great dinner at Ocean Seafood last night with a fun and engaging collection of bloggers.

Everyone seemed to have a good time (except for the whole ‘waiter bringing the live fish by for us to inspect before they fried it’ thing. Several folks felt that we now had a personal relationship with the fish, which made them uncomfortable when it was served. I’ll note didn’t diminish the speed with which it was devoured)

Great food, beer, excellent and good-humored company and a lively and usually friendly chat.

I hope we do it again soon.

Yes, a great time was had by all and the Armed Liberal pictured above was able to moderate the politicla discussion so that Flap did not have to fight off a rabid pro-Kerry blogger from the Valley.

    Heh!

Read Cobb’s account of the fish tale here, Eating Nemo.

The third thing that you notice about Marc Danziger is that he’s older than he looks and he has probably heard that amusing anecdote you’re about to tell before. The second thing you notice is that he’s totally unphony and genuinely interested in holding court, and he’s good at it.

Last night, court was held at Ocean Seafood, downtown in Chinatown. We expected a couple dozen but became about 10 gradually thinking we might only be five. Among the courtesans as the Moscone-Schmitz Roundtable were Flap and his better half, Dave who remained rather reserved through the evening, Pamela the Kerry Goddess, Rand of Interplanetary Musings, Juliette, my brother Doc, Marc and myself. The guy whose name I forgot set me straight on some Long Tail implications, but he was on my bad ear side and some of his wisdom was garbled in translation.

We broke up around 11, and lagged around until they threw us out. All promised to return. I’m in.

It was nice seeing Cobb and Baldilocks again – fellow members of the Bear Flag League.

Flap is in too and will be looking forward to the next meeting.

Dentistry Today: Should Dentists Report METH Mouth?

Eyewitness News Channel Five Minneapolis/St. Paul has Some want dentists to report ‘meth mouth’

Some law enforcement officials are pushing an idea that would require dentists to report cases of ‘meth mouth.’

The officials want the dentists’ help in identifying methamphetamine users by their poor dental conditions. ‘Meth mouth’ is the appearance of dark spots on the teeth and decay in the roots. The symptom is caused by acid in meth. It also included clenching teeth, craving for sugar, and dry mouth.

The condition costs Minnesota taxpayers thousands of dollars, as many of the people who have it are incarcerated.

    Video is here.

So, should dentists have to report this condition to law enforcement?

Flap thinks it will be an unworkable plan.

Better to put the time and effort into interdicting the supplies of methamphetamine from Mexico and treatment programs.

Dr. Nelson Rhodus of the University of Minnesota has studied ‘meth mouth’ and says significant decay can occur within a year of chronic meth use.

“For the benefit of society and ultimately the benefit of the person, I think this should be considered to be a reportable condition,” Rhodus said.

Dentists must currently report seeing child or spousal abuse, or sores from sexually transmitted diseases.

Sen. Julie Rosen of Fairmont says it is the possession of meth that is a crime, not any after affects from using the drug. “If they do call law enforcement, they could come and talk to them. But I don’t think I necessarily want to make it a law,” she said.

Dental bills at some correctional facilities have tripled because of ‘meth mouth,’ and many users are on public assistance.

If the condition is advanced, it can cost $25,000 per person to fix.

Education, interdiction of precursor chemicals used to manufacture meth, foreign interdiction of precurors and manufactured methamphetamine and treatment are worthwhile goals for solving the meth problem.

Dental reporting sounds good but will be ineffective in solving the larger problems.

Iraq War Watch: Murtha Says Cut and Run Part Three

Reps. Robert Brady, D-Pa., left, and John Murtha, D-Pa., walk through a corridor, Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

The ASSociated Press has Lawmakers Reject Immediate Iraq Withdrawal

The Republican-controlled House spurned calls for an immediate pullout of troops from Iraq in a vote hastily arranged by the GOP that Democrats vociferously denounced as politically motivated.

“To cut and run would invite terrorism into our backyards, and no one wants to see troops fighting terrorism on American soil,” Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said Friday night after the House, as planned, rejected a GOP-written resolution for immediate withdrawal.

The vote, held as lawmakers rushed toward a two-week Thanksgiving break, was 403-3.

Flap asked previosuly if the Democrats would cut and run.

Apparently they will not put their MONEY (their political credibility) where their MOUTHS are.

They can bitch about unfair votes all they want…… but the lefties are finally on record.

    Earth to Congressman Murtha…..

At one point in the emotional debate, Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, told of a phone call she received from a Marine colonel.

“He asked me to send Congress a message – stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message – that cowards cut and run, Marines never do,” Schmidt said. Murtha is a 37-year Marine veteran and ranking Democrat on the defense appropriations subcommittee.

The Congressman has been listening to Michael Moore too much or perhaps he has just forgotten………..
