North Korea Watch: United Nations Security Council Votes for Limited Sanctions on North Korea
U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton votes on a unanimously approved Security Council resolution to impose weapons-related sanctions on North Korea, in response to its flurry of missile tests earlier this month, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, July 15, 2006.
Reuters: UN sanctions vote prompts North Korea rejection
The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday for a resolution requiring nations to prevent North Korea from getting dangerous weapons and demanding Pyongyang halt its ballistic missile program.
North Korea immediately “totally rejected” the resolution. Its U.N. Ambassador Pak Gil Yon told the council that Pyongyang’s missile development served “to keep the balance of force and preserving peace and stability in Northeast Asia.”
In response, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said Pak “set a world record in rejecting it within 45 minutes after its adoption,” adding: “I could exercise the right of reply on behalf of the United States — but on the other hand, why bother?”
Ok, Flap was wrong and a resolution made it out of the United Nations Security Council today. However, China won its position and the resolution does not have the force or impact of a chapter 7 resolution, despite new stronger language by Great Britain.
Naturally, North Korea promptly rejected the “toothless” UNSC resolution.
So, now what?
North Korea’s Ambassador to the United Nations Pak Gil Yon speaks at the United Nations Security Council after a vote on the North Korea missile crisis Saturday July 15, 2006 at the United Nations in New York.
The resolution bans all U.N. member states from selling material or technology for missiles or weapons of mass destruction to North Korea, and from receiving missiles, banned weapons or technology from Pyongyang.
It condemns North Korea’s multiple missile launches on July 5 and demands that North Korea “suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile program” and re-establish a moratorium on missile launches. It strongly urges North Korea to return to six-party talks on its nuclear program, which have been stalled since last September.
The resolution adopted Saturday by a 15-0 vote states that the Security Council was “acting under its special responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.”
The United States, Britain, France and Japan insist that even without Chapter 7, the resolution is mandatory and all countries are required to comply — including North Korea.
Japan, which views itself as a potential target of North Korean missiles, sponsored the initial resolution, which in the end was put to a vote as a presidential text, with the support of all council members.
Will North Korea test more missiles?
Probably……
The United Nations’ ten day exercise in diplomacy has been worthless. The resolution today means nothing and if North Korea decides to test more missiles Russia and China will develop new excuses to enforcing sanctions on North Korea.
Stay tuned……

G-8 Summit Watch: President Bush Blocks World Trade Organization Membership for Russia
U.S. President George W. Bush, left, and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a joint news conference at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, Saturday, July 15, 2006.
AP: Bush blocks WTO entry for Russia
In a chilly summit prelude, President Bush blocked Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization on Saturday and President Vladimir Putin mockingly said Moscow doesn’t want the kind of violence-plagued democracy the United States has fostered in Iraq.
Alternately joking and poking at each other, the two also showed differences at a news conference on the explosion of violence in the Mideast.
Bush held Israel blameless for its punishing attacks in Lebanon and said it was up to the militant group Hezbollah to lay down its arms. Putin was critical of Israel’s use of force and said the violence “should stop as soon as possible.”
And why should Russia be admitted to the World Trade Organization? These Reds have been complicit in putting a finger in America’s eye since Putin began his reign of anti-democracy. And why should Russia be a member of the G-8? Russia should be suspended from G8 participation until it begins democratic reforms.
The two leaders met for two hours before the opening of the annual summit of eight major world powers, which was expected to focus on nuclear problems with Iran and North Korea and the escalating fighting between Israel and the Islamic guerrilla group Hezbollah.
There was a quick handshake but little warmth between Bush and Putin during a photo opportunity opening their talks. For the second day, Bush spent part of it mountain biking.
Despite the sparring, there was none of the tension and anger that crackled in Bratislava, Slovakia, 17 months ago when Bush challenged Putin over Russia’s crackdown on dissent and retreat from democracy and the Russian president slapped back. After that jarring meeting, Bush concluded that lecturing Putin in public was unproductive. Still, Bush said he offered Putin some suggestions.
“I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world like Iraq where there’s a free press and free religion,” Bush said at the news conference, “and I told him that a lot of people in our country would hope that Russia would do the same thing.”
Putin, in a barbed reply, said: “We certainly would not want to have the same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, I will tell you quite honestly.” Bush’s face reddened as he tried to laugh off the remark. “Just wait,” Bush replied about Iraq.
Remember Russia is NOT America’s friend or ally. Cold War history is hard to forget.
Putin also said Russia would not take part “in any crusades, in any holy alliances” — a remark seemingly intended to win points with Arab allies. Bush’s national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, said he was perplexed by the comment.
If they want to insult the President, America and oppose our foreign policy initiatives/interests at every turn, then to hell with them.
Let them trade with the Mullahs……
Trust But Verify…….
Stay tuned…..

California Election 2006 Watch: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Proposes Term Limit Modification
Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger talks on the cell phone to a prospective voter as volunteer Peter Soule, left, works on a phone bank at Schwarzenegger’s new campaign office in Mountain View, Calif., Thursday, July 13, 2006. This is one of 48 campaign offices opening up throughout the state for Schwarzenegger.
Los Angeles Times: Gov. Seeks Deal That Would Ease Term Limits
Hoping to resurrect an idea voters rejected in last year’s special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to offer lawmakers a deal: He’ll support an easing of term limits if they’ll agree to change the way California draws voting districts.
Schwarzenegger said in an interview Thursday he does not believe term limits have improved Sacramento’s political culture. Allowing legislators to stay in office longer would be worthwhile, he said, if it induced them to put a proposal on the ballot that would strip them of the power to carve political boundaries.
NO WAY……
Schwarzenegger was once supportive of term limits but now says they have failed to improve Sacramento or make lawmakers more accountable.
“I’m not fanatical about that,” he said of the state’s term limits law. “The idea was really good, and there are a lot of people who are big, big fans of term limits. But as far as I’m concerned, it hasn’t really produced.”
Something, governor, conservatives in the GOP have been saying about you during your entire term in office.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, right, gets a laugh from Secretary of Food and Agriculture A.G. Kawamura, left, Under Secretary for Energy Affairs Joe Desmond and Madera Mayor Robert L. Poythress, before answering questions from the media at a news conference at Pacific Ethanol Inc., Thursday, July 13, 2006, in Madera, Calif. The company says construction of the plant should be complete by the fourth quarter of this year and expects the facility to produce more than 35 million gallons of ethanol a year.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Israel – Iran Aided Hezbollah Ship Attack
An Israeli warship lies off the coast of Lebanon, in the Mediterranean Sea, after it shelled the coastal highway north of Sidon, Lebanon, Friday, July 14, 2006. Israel brought its offensive in Lebanon to south Beirut on Friday, with warplanes blasting residential neighborhoods in an attempt to hit Hezbollah’s headquarters and road links. Airstrikes cut the main highway to Syria and exploded fuel tanks, sending palls of smoke over the capital.
AP: Israel: Iran Aided Hezbollah Ship Attack
A missile fired by Hezbollah, not an unmanned drone laden with explosives, damaged an Israeli warship off Lebanon, the army said Saturday. Elite Iranian troops helped fire the missile, a senior Israeli intelligence official said.
One sailor was killed and three were missing.
The intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, said about 100 Iranian soldiers are in Lebanon and helped fire the Iranian-made, radar-guided C-102 at the ship late Friday.
The official added that the troops involved in firing the missile are from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, an elite corps of more than 200,000 fighters that is independent of the regular armed forces and controlled directly by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
If Iranian involvement is confirmed, President Bush in NO uncertain terms must tell Iranian President Ahmadinejad any further attack on Israel will be viewed as an attack on the United States. Any Iranian troop movement or missile staging would be a “provocative act” and Iran would pay a military cost.
Flap bets the Pentagon war planners are working overtime to plan the bombing Iran’s missile and nuclear facilities.
Stay tuned…..

Democrat Party Watch: Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee Pull Flag-Draped Coffin Campaign Ad
DCCC Uses Dead Soldiers to Raise Money
AP: Democrats pull ad with flag-draped coffins
Democrats pulled an Internet ad that showed flag-draped coffins Friday after Republicans and at least two Democrats demanded it be taken down on grounds the image was insensitive and not fit for a political commercial.
The ad by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called for a “new direction” and displayed a staccato of images, including war scenes, pollution and breached levees as well as a photograph of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay doctored to look like a police mug shot.
Now, Clinton crony, DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill should apologize.
This was a pathetic ad inspired by the liberal morons of the netroots. Another example of the tug o’ war between mainstream Democrats and the Moonbat left.
