A general view shows the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the Iranian Persian Gulf port of Bushehr, 1,200 Kms south of Tehran, in June 2006. US President George W. Bush signed into law a new set of sanctions targeting foreign countries that continue nuclear cooperation with Iran and sell it advanced weaponry.

Forbes: President Signs Iran Sanctions Bill

President Bush on Saturday signed legislation that would impose mandatory sanctions on entities that provide goods or services for Iran’s weapons programs.

The Senate passed the bill with no debate Saturday, two days after the House approved the measure following a debate over the wisdom of toughening unilateral sanctions on Tehran at the same time the United States was trying to work with its U.N. partners on a multinational approach to Iran’s nuclear threat.

The measure sanctions any entity that contributes to Iran’s ability to acquire chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.

In a statement, Bush said, “This legislation will codify U.S. sanctions on Iran while providing my administration with flexibility to tailor those sanctions in appropriate circumstances and impose sanctions upon entities that aid the Iranian regime’s development of nuclear weapons.”

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said in a statement that the action “strengthened one of our most important tools in the fight to keep nuclear weapons out of the mullahs’ hands.”

He said it would encourage the administration to use all available leverage over Russia, a partner in Iranian energy projects, to gain Russian support for multilateral sanctions against Iran.

Russia and China cannot have it both ways with regards to the Iranian nuclear porgram. If they wish to do nothing then the United States WILL sanction Iran and them.

The text of the new law: Iran Freedom Support Act is here.

Now, on to the United Nations Security Council.

Did Iran REALLY think there would be no sanctions from the United States?

Probably……..

Stay tuned……

Guardian Unlimited: How one of the biggest rows of modern times helped Danish exports to prosper

A year ago, Denmark’s 200,000 Muslims found themselves at the centre of one of the most defining cultural rows of our time. On September 30 a conservative Danish newspaper decided to publish a series of cartoons mocking the prophet Muhammad. It was a provocative exercise in free speech.

The cartoons provoked a group of Danish imams to tour the Middle East. By February this year, Denmark’s centre-right Liberal prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, was dealing with the country’s worst crisis since the second world war. Muslim mobs set fire to Danish embassies in Damascus and Beirut, burnt the Danish flag, and boycotted Danish cheese. At least 139 people died.

But one year on there is a strong sense in Denmark that the crisis might just have helped.

All European governments now seem to be grappling with the same problem: how far do they go in accommodating Muslims who do not share the same values of free speech? And as a row over the cancellation of a Mozart opera in Berlin this week – for fear of Muslim attacks – demonstrates, the issues raised by the cartoon row have not gone away.

If anything the publishing of the Muhammad Caricatures or Cartoons was neutral for Danish exports.Increased exports to the United States picked up the loss of exports to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.

So, the Muhammad Cartoons were not bad for Danish business.

Did it sensitze Denmark and other countries in Europe to Muslim immigration and the lack of their assimilation?

You bet…….

Is there now a discussion in Europe as to European identity and the Islamic illegal immigration problem?

Yes and LONG overdue…..

Indonesian Muslim protesters burn a Danish flag during a demonstration in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, Monday, Feb. 6, 2006. Muslims rallied in several cities in the world’s most populous Muslim country Monday to show anger over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Western newspapers. Writings on the posters say ‘Put Danish Prime Minister on international tribunal.’

Former Army Major L. Tammy Duckworth, right, is helped by her husband Bryan Bowlsbey, as she walks around to greet supporters after announcing her candidacy for Illinois’ 6th Congressional district at her Lombard, Ill., headquarters in this Dec. 18, 2005, file photo. Duckworth, a Democrat and Iraq War veteran who lost both legs when her Blackhawk helicopter crashed in Iraq, now faces Republican Peter Roskam in an Illinois open seat.

AP: Candidate-veteran attacks Bush on Iraq

An Illinois congressional candidate who lost both her legs during combat in Iraq said Saturday that President Bush has no real strategy for securing the war-ravaged nation, just political talk designed to appeal to voters.

“Instead of a plan or a strategy, we get shallow slogans like ‘mission accomplished’ and ‘stay the course,’” former Army Capt. Tammy Duckworth said in the Democrats’ weekly radio address. “Those slogans are calculated to win an election. But they won’t help us accomplish our mission in Iraq.”

Duckworth’s address served as a response to the president’s weekly radio talk and gave the Democratic Party a chance to showcase one of its strongest candidates as it seeks to regain control of the House in November’s elections.

Duckworth, who copiloted a Black Hawk helicopter that crashed while under a rocket grenade attack almost two years ago, also criticized Bush and others in his administration for accusing anyone who challenges the president’s policies of “cutting and running.”

“Well, I didn’t cut and run, Mr. President. Like so many others, I proudly fought and sacrificed,” Duckworth said. “My helicopter was shot down long after you proclaimed ‘mission accomplished.’”

Thank you Mrs. Duckworth for your service and your sacrifice to the American people.

But, you are WRONG.

The Democrats, including yourself have NO PLAN except CUT AND RUN or REDEPLOY.

The Iraq mission is a noble and important one. America must complete the mission for a free and demcocratic Iraq.

A helicopter pilot you may be but a foreign policy expert you are NOT.

In her address, Duckworth, now a major in the Illinois National Guard, also lashed out at the GOP-led Congress for refusing to do its job of holding the Bush administration accountable for its flawed Iraq policy.

“We need a Congress that will ask the tough questions and work together for solutions rather than attacking the patriotism of those who disagree,” she said. “It is time to encourage Iraqi leaders to take control of their own county and make the tough choices that will stop the civil war and stabilize the country.”

She offered no proposal for an immediate withdrawal or a timetable for withdrawal.

Duckworth and the Demcorats have NO POLICY.

Stay tuned…….

Spanish Interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba(L) speaks with EU commissioner for Interior affairs Franco Frattini prior to the start of an eight-country round table on immigration in Madrid. French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy warned European governments that failure to turn back a tide of clandestine immigrants could fuel an explosion of xenophobia in Europe.

AFP: French minister issues stark warning over illegal immigration

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy warned European governments that failure to turn back a tide of clandestine immigrants could fuel an explosion of xenophobia in Europe.

His warning came on his arrival here to attend a meeting of ministers from eight countries to thrash out ways of tackling the crisis on the continent’s borders, where illegal immigration has reached alarming proportions.

“The crisis confronting Europe is only beginning. If we decide not to act, we are going to give rise to xenophobic sentiments in our societies which we will not be able to control,” Sarkozy told reporters.

Xenophobic sentiments my ASS. Sarkozy is worried about Muslim community riots/terrorism and the demands of social services from the non-French illegal aliens.

Most European countries have declining birthrates and are indeed not having sufficient native born children to replenish their populations.

But, who will do the work that native born Europeans don’t wish to do for their welfare/socialist states?

Muslim immigrants.

The Europeans have a MAJOR problem.

Mark Steyn says the Europeans are GONERS.

Indeed…….
