CA taxes the internet A National Internet Sales or Amazon Tax Bill?

As you recall, I covered the internet sales tax issue in California during the 2011 legislative session. Here is a link to a whole bunch of posts on the internet sales tax issue.

Now, Amazon.com has taken the fight to Washington – as I wrote about earlier this year.

Now, the United States Senate is considering S. 1832, the Marketplace Fairness Act. The bill’s details are here.

Tim Carney over at the Washington Examiner has the flap and how Amazon.com is teaming up with Walmart to support a national internet sales tax.

Congressmen in both parties want you to pay more taxes on your online purchases, and once again, big business is lobbying for bigger government, which would hurt Mom and Pop.

Online sales taxes have been a battlefield for lobbying titans for years, pitting Walmart and the rest of the brick-and-mortar retail lobby against Amazon and other online retailers. But now Amazon has changed its business model and also its lobbying position, joining the rest of the retail giants in calling on Congress to aid states in collecting sales tax from online sales.

So, the argument of “tax fairness” is being used by the Democrats to raise more tax revenue and by Big Business to stifle competition. The story sounds familiar, now doesn’t it?

Watch Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina outline the issues in the video below:

It looks to me that Big Business and Big Government will win this fight. And, the American taxpayer will again get to pay more in taxes.

amazon taxing internet Update: Americans for Tax Reform Call AB 155 a Pledge Violation; California Republican State Senators to Support Internet Sales Taxes?

I have a new post up over at Flap’s California Blog on the Flap.

Go here and read which California State Senators might FLIP.

Kind of interesting that the California Republican Party is asking Republican donors to support a referendum to overturn the California Citizen’s Redistricting Commission’s State Senate Redistricting Maps and these Senators FLIP to support a Democratic position anyway.

I mean, why bother, when all of the Republicans become RINOS (Republican in Name Only)?

By the way, the legislation which will likely be heard in the California State Senate tomorrow, requires three (3) Republican Senators to FLIP (NB: none voted for the Amazon Tax when it first came through the California Legislature).

What games the Democrats in the California Legislature play to impose or collect new taxes.
A group of California legislators plans to pass a new online sales tax bill in a move to thwart tax opponent Amazon.com.

Lawmakers today used a “gut-and-amend” procedure that takes an existing bill and substitutes an online sales tax measure. The bill passed the Senate Appropriations Committee today.

In late June, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill requiring Amazon and other online retailers to begin collecting sales tax on California transactions. The bill passed on a regular, majority vote. Amazon has refused to collect the tax and launched a referendum to have it overturned.

But Larry Levin, a spokesman for Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, said the new legislation would be different. It would pass on a two-thirds supermajority and would carry an “urgency” clause. That means it can’t be subject to ballot referendum, Levin said.

I would urge my fellow Republicans in the California Legislature to BLOCK this tax increase on California taxpayers and allow the referendum process sort out the law.

As I said before, the only people that will win on California Internet Sales Taxes are the political campaign consultants and the lawyers.

This will be an expensive campaign without a doubt.
