Giuliani Notes: Rudy 29% McCain 17% Thompson 15% Romney 8% in Latest FOX News Poll
The FOX News/Opinion Dynamic Poll:
The GOP NUTS:
As Flap has said for a few weeks (since it was definite that Thompson would announce his candidacy) the race is now between Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani.
Rudy continues to be the front-runner.
Mitt Romney has been polling well in Iowa and New Hampshire but he is fading nationally and is statistically tied with Rudy in the latest New Hampshire polling.
Again, Flap maintains it will be Florida that will determine the momentum going into Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008 that is the race to watch.

Illegal Immigration Watch: Kill the Bill S. 1639 Part 3 – Breaking Down The Senate Vote
First Read has the breakdown of votes on cloture for Senate Bill 1639, the Shamnesty Illegal Immigration bill:
The Presidential candidates: All of the Democratic candidates voted YES. McCain, who was part of the bipartisan coalition that crafted and supported the bill, also voted YES. Brownback’s initial vote was YES, but later, probably when the outcome was clear, switched to NO.
Senators up for reelection in 2008: On the Democratic side, all the blue state senators voted YES (Biden, Durbin, Kerry, Lautenberg, Levin, Reed). But those Democrats running in red or purples states voted NO (Baucus, Harkin, Landrieu, Pryor, Rockefeller).
Most of the Republican senators up for re-election this cycle voted NO (Alexander, Allard, Chambliss, Cochran, Coleman, Collins, Cornyn, Dole, Domenici, Enzi, Inhofe, McConnell, Roberts, Sessions, Smith, Stevens, Sununu, Warner). The exceptions, with YES votes, were Craig, Hagel, and Graham (who is one of the original and most vocal coalition members that wrote the bill).
Senate Leadership: The Republican leadership was split. GOP Leader McConnell, who’s also up for re-election, voted NO. (He had voted YES on another procedural vote earlier this week.) McConnell was joined by Texas Sens. Hutchison and Cornyn, as well as Ensign, who’s responsible for running the GOP senate campaigns this cycle. Lott and Kyl split with the leadership and voted YES.
All the members of the Democratic Leadership stuck together with YES votes: Reid, Durbin, Murray, and Schumer.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Rudy on Today’s Senate Bill 1639 Vote
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani greets a passerby during a walking tour of the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Wednesday, June 27, 2007.
Rudy Giuliani on today’s Senate Immigration Bill vote:
“Today a majority in the Senate made clear this bill shortchanged the American people by failing to end illegal immigration and failing to secure our borders. The bill did not deserve to move forward.
“As I have said before, this bill – which I believed was based more on compromise than on principle – failed to do several basic things, including: securing our borders, creating a uniform tamper-proof ID card for all foreign workers and students, establishing a single nationwide database of foreigners, and mandating the full implementation of a biometric ‘check in-check out’ system.
“The legislation was a hodgepodge at best, and I believe it would have ultimately made our country less secure.
“I urge the President to use the authority and funds at his disposal to do everything possible to end illegal immigration and secure our borders.â€
Today’s vote has delivered up the illegal immigration issue to the GOP Presidential contenders.
Rudy et al should press the Democrats, particularly Hillary Clinton on this issue.

Michael Ramirez on Russia’s Vladimir Putin
Russia holds successful missile test
Russia successfully tested a new sea-based ballistic missile Thursday after several previous failures, a naval spokesman said.
Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press that the Bulava missile hit its target on the Pacific peninsula of Kamchatka after being launched from the submarine Dmitry Donskoi in the White Sea.
Three earlier tests of the Bulava in recent years ended in failure, raising questions about the missile, which has been hailed as a key future component of Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
As President Bush meets with Russia’s President Putin next week, Flap likes to remind the President of Ronald Reagan’s old adage: TRUST BUT VERIFY.
Update:
Russia lays claim to the North Pole – and all its gas, oil, and diamonds
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has made an astonishing bid to grab a vast chunk of the Arctic, giving himself claim to its vast potential oil, gas and mineral wealth.
His audacious argument that an underwater Russian ridge is linked to the North Pole is likely to lead to an international outcry.
Some commentators have already observed it is further evidence of growing Russian assertiveness under its authoritarian president.
Is Russian assertiveness a result of Bush weakness?
Possible……..
They will have an interesting meeting next week.

Giuliani Notes: Rudy Fading?
Former New York Mayor and Republican presidential candidate, Rudy Giuliani, holds 10-month-old Eva Corra as he stands with a group of children during a walking tour in Pittsburgh, Wednesday, June 27, 2007.
Likely GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson has made stunning gains on front-runner Rudy Giuilani in three key battleground states, including Florida, a poll released yesterday found.
Giuliani leads Thompson 27-21 percent among Florida Republican voters, according to the Quinnipiac Poll – a dramatic shrinkage of the former mayor’s 32-point edge in April. In April, 38 percent of Florida Republicans favored Giuliani, compared to 15 percent for John McCain, and just 6 for Thompson. Since then, Giuliani dipped by 11 points, while Thompson skyrocketed by 15 points.
In Ohio, Giuliani’s lead over Thompson dwindled from 15 points to eight points over the two-month period. Giuliani now has 25 percent of the GOP vote in Ohio to 17 percent for Thompson.
While Giuliani garnered the same percentage in Ohio as the April survey, Thompson more than doubled his 8 percent, while McCain sunk by five points.
In Pennsylvania, Giuliani held his most solid lead with 29 percent – the same level of support as in April – compared to 15 percent apiece for Thompson and McCain. But Giuliani’s margin over Thompson fell from 23 points to 14 points.
The race for President 2008 is definitely tightening. Mitt Romney is leading in Iowa and New Hampshire. Fred Thompson will soon announce and will probably surge in South Carolina and Florida.
Watch for Thompson movement in California.
LIkely Rudy will go “ON AIR” with a television media campaign soon after Labor Day -probably after McCain withdraws.
This is a horse race now and the campaign will be won in the trenches of persuading voters.
Stay tuned……

Since Dingy Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader has said he will pull the bill if cloture is agreed to, the bill is NOW dead.
The Majority leader can bring the bill back later – but unlikely.
