Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Lieberman Will Run as an Independent if He Loses Democrat Primary

Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman

AP: Lieberman may campaign as independent

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, facing a stronger-than-expected Democratic primary challenge and sagging poll numbers because of his support of the Iraq war, said Monday he’ll collect signatures to run as an unaffiliated candidate if he loses next month’s primary.

“While I believe that I will win the Aug. 8 primary, I know there are no guarantees in elections,” Lieberman told reporters on the steps of Connecticut’s statehouse Monday. “No one really knows how many Democrats will come out to vote on what may be a hot day in August.”

Lieberman said if he loses the primary, he would run in November as a petitioning Democrat. He said he plans to remain part of the Democratic caucus in the Senate if re-elected.

“I want the opportunity to put my case before all the people of Connecticut in November,” Lieberman said.

The Lefties in Connecticut and the blogosphere continue to eat one of their own. Welcome to the GOP (well, sort of) Senator.

Former Connecticut State Democratic Party Chairman George Jepsen, left, gives his endorsement to Ned Lamont, right, at a news conference outside the state Capitol in Hartford, Conn., Monday, June 19, 2006. Lamont is challenging incumbent three-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for the nomination to run for the U.S. Senate from Connecticut.

Lieberman will be re-elected Senator from Connecticut.

Wonder what the LEFT will do to Hillary who has similar views on the Iraq War? Don’t count Al Gore out.

Markos Moulitsas “Screw Them” Zuniga and Lamont in Hartford.  And the cursing at KOS (H/T Althouse)
Captain Ed has Lieberman Starts His Independent Bid

The Lamont Blog has a response one could not describe as measured or even accurate:

In addition, Joe has just created a world of shit for his supposed friends Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Chris Dodd, Diane Farrell, Joe Courtney, and Chris Murphy. I wonder what they all think of this. This is how he treats his friends. This is how he treats his party. On the slowest news day of the summer.

These are the actions of a very weak candidate, and a selfish and cowardly man.

What a sorry sight to see an 18-year incumbent senator running scared from a little primary challenge like this. No backbone. No courage. No integrity.

And not a Democrat anymore, either.

Lieberman remains a Democrat, even with the independent bid, especially since he’s committed to caucusing with the Democrats if elected. While one can understand why the Lamont campaign would want to make hay of both the announcement and its timing, the assignment of cowardice seems more than just a little ironic. Lieberman hasn’t pulled out of the primary, after all; he still plans on contesting it. More to the point, the entire reason for Lamont’s campaign and its surprisingly large following is that Lamont wants an immediate retreat from Iraq, cutting and running rather than fight the terrorists in the one place that even Osama understands as the center stage of the war on terror. Throwing around accusations of cowardice seems a bit odd under the circumstances.

I suspect that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will have some uncomfortable moments in the next few weeks. Undoubtedly they will hope that Lieberman will win the primary and let them off the hook. They may do more than just hope, which may result in a nasty split between the hard-Left and the DLC factions, just as the midterms approach. It looks like the Democrats may well wind up with the split that appeared imminent in the GOP until a couple of weeks ago
Captain Ed is RIGHT. There will be a dilemma that will cause a schism between the hard left netroot Kossaks on the one hand and the mainstream DNC operatives on the other. This intraparty split cannot be helpful to a party who seeks majority status. Fundraising would be especially hurt.
Moreover, a Lamont win in the primary will drive many maintream Democrats to the door and barring a few will vote for Lieberman anyway. How will this help the GOP? It will tie up resources that would otherwise go to other races e.g. Montana.

    Editorial

Gov. Schwarzenegger made the correct  decision last week when he declined to deploy more National Guard troops to the  Mexican border. Sending additional California forces would unfairly burden the
    state.

    …

Because the administration’s plan for using the guard at the border only proposed a total of 6,000 troops, that would mean California would be lifting nearly half the burden for the country. And the additional soldiers would be watching the border  in other states, not in California.

The governor properly focused on the  need for the National Guard to be available in case of emergencies in California. The state  faces an ever-present danger of earthquakes, plus wildfires, floods and
mudslides at various times of the year. And while California has more than 20,000 troops in its National
Guard, including those deployed in Iraq, the California guard also has more area and people  to protect in a disaster-prone state.

Meantime, illegal immigration has spread  far beyond California, Arizona, New Mexico and  Texas. Many
states now have large undocumented work forces. And border security affects the  whole nation, not just the border  states. California has plenty of guard muscle, but  other states should be willing to lend some brawn to border enforcement, as well.

    Actually, Arnold has it WRONG.

And last night on Fox News he was beaten up pretty badly by Bill O’Reilly.  Why?

Arnold has NO coherent illegal immigration policy.

First, he was with the Minutemen. Then, he was against a border wall. And he BLAMED the federal government for inaction.

    And…….now what?

Come on Arnold…..tell us what you plan?

Again, Arnold’s campaign is not making it easy for conservatives to vote for him.  O’Reilly says GOP voters will stay home and Arnold may lose.

    Possible.

Illegal Immigration Watch: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Demands Congress Act on Illegal Immigration

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger shakes hands with California National Guard members during a tour of the U.S./Mexico border area near the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. Schwarzenegger toured the area from a helicopter and held a news conference along the border fence.

Reuters: Schwarzenegger demands Congress act on immigration

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took the U.S. Congress to task on Wednesday before a tour of his state’s border with Mexico, demanding it pass legislation to address illegal immigration.

“I believe it is totally irresponsible for the politicians in Washington, D.C. to have failed yet again to pass a comprehensive immigration reform plan and address this national crisis,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

“Until our border is secure, I know all Americans share my concern about drug trafficking and illegal immigration, as well as the possibility of terrorists entering our country undetected,” he said.

This is typical election year blustering from Arnold. On the issue of illegal immigration he has been inconsistent at best.

First, he was with the Minutemen. Then, he was against a border wall. And he BLAMED the federal government for inaction.

    And…….now what?

Come on Arnold…..tell us what you plan?

It is easy to criticize the Congress but Governor Schwarzenegger how about allocating some resources to help build better border security fencing or support a California Border Police initiative? Or committ some resources to help our National Guard troops?
If you want to discuss illegal immigration then how about acting like a policy maker instead of a bloviating actor turned politico.

California Election 2006 Watch: San Francisco Gay Pride Group Throws a “Pink Brick” at Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Graphic Courtesy of the San Francisco Chronicle

San Francisco Chronicle: S.F. gay pride group hurls a ‘Pink Brick’ at Gov. Schwarzenegger

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is preparing to embrace gay Republicans at a fundraiser in Southern California next week — but back in San Francisco, a brick is headed his way over his veto of last year’s same-sex marriage bill.

Schwarzenegger is this year’s recipient of the “Pink Brick” award, a raspberry handed out annually by organizers of the San Francisco gay pride parade.

The governor received nearly a third of the 3,043 mail-in ballots cast in advance of this Sunday’s parade. That was well ahead of the second-place Concerned Women for America, a Christian-based group that campaigns against same-sex marriage.

Last year’s brick winner was Sen. Dianne Feinstein, for her analysis that the “too much, too fast, too soon” push for same-sex marriage rights had helped cost the Democrats the 2004 presidential election.

“It’s just another way to put pressure on a leader to look at our community … and take our issues seriously,” said Lindsey Jones, executive director of the San Francisco pride parade.

The brick wasn’t the only snub Arnold got in repayment for his veto in September of Assemblyman Mark Leno’s bill granting same-sex partners the right to marry.

The Governor is attempting to reach out to voter constituents and the radical Gay Left wants to slap him for his failure to support Gay Marriage.

No California Governor or candidate for Governor will EVER support Gay Marriage.

    Why?

The majority of California voters do NOT support it.

Asked about his refusal to back same-sex marriages during a Webcam conversation with the public Tuesday, Schwarzenegger — whose chief of staff, Susan Kennedy, is a lesbian — emphasized his support for domestic partner rights. But he said voters had sent a loud and clear “no” in 2000 when they passed Proposition 22, which reaffirmed the state’s definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman.

But, the Lefty Gay groups will continue to fight the 20,000 strong GOP supporting Log Cabin Republicans.

And you can bet he will be singing much the same tune June 29 when he’s scheduled to appear at a big Hollywood gathering benefiting the gay Log Cabin Republicans. It’s his first appearance before a gay audience since taking office in November 2003.

“It’s a way of saying ‘thank you’ to an organization that supported him during the recall and during his reform agenda last year, and that has supported his re-election — and it’s the only gay group that frankly did that,” said Chris Bowman, a local GOP gay activist who plans to attend the dinner.

As for the governor’s veto of the Leno bill, Patrick Guerriero, national president of the 20,000-member Log Cabin Republicans, said, “The governor has signed scores of (gay) supportive legislation.

“We recognize that there is a lot of education work to do, not only with the governor, but with Californians, as well,” Guerriero said.

And what has Democrat Treasurer and Gubernatorial candidate promised to the Left Gay folks?

Will he promise to sign a Gay Marriage Bill?

    Well, will he?

California Election 2006 Watch: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Refuses to Endorse Fellow Democrat California Treasurer Phil Angelides for Governor

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mrs. Villaraigosa, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at the Mayor’s inauguration, July 1, 2005.

Los Angeles Times: Tension Builds Between L.A. Mayor, Angelides

Villaraigosa declines to endorse the candidate, who’s refused to back takeover of school district.

Tension between Antonio Villaraigosa and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides surfaced Friday as the Los Angeles mayor declined to say whether he backed his own party’s candidate to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The rift between two of California’s top Democrats became clear just after they appeared with Magic Johnson to celebrate the opening of a Starbucks on Crenshaw Boulevard.

Why, of course. Should California Treasurer Phil Angelides win the governorship it freezes out Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa from running for governor for at least eight years. In this period of time, Villaraigosa may actually be held accountable for his governance of Los Angeles instead of being the poster child for the Hispanic National Caucus of the Democrat Party.

Minutes after Villaraigosa’s tepid remarks on his candidacy, Angelides refused to take a stand on Villaraigosa’s plan to take over the Los Angeles public schools.

The dual snubs were part of a broad conflict between the two Democrats.

Villaraigosa’s plan to REFORM “TAKE OVER” Los Angeles Schools is nothing but a power grab. Everyone on the LEFT and RIGHT knows this. The California Teachers Association who endorsed Angelides in his partisan primary race against California Controller Steve Westly hates the idea.

Why would Angelides wish to endorse this plan? For a few Latino votes delivered by Villaraigosa?

    Questionable

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, August 30, 2005.

Villaraigosa is torn between party loyalty and the potential rewards offered by his new alliance with the Republican governor. He plans to campaign with Schwarzenegger for bond measures on the November ballot that could offer Los Angeles billions of dollars for schools, housing and traffic relief. And the governor would decide where much of that bounty went.

Phil Angelides will get little help from Antonio Villarigosa this Fall. Will the Governator benefit?

You betcha – all the way to re-election.

In the meantime, the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, also a potential Democrat governor candidate has been campaigning with Angelides.

On Monday, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, another potential candidate for governor, threw his support behind Angelides and campaigned with him at a North Beach health clinic. Newsom, highly popular in his city, has also offered to gather every Bay Area Democratic official in a room to urge them to work for Angelides’ election.

Newsom’s unabashed support only underscored the unusual nature of Villaraigosa’s reticence. Nearly all of California’s other top Democrats, including U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, supported Angelides during the primary.

Is Arnold practicing a little “DIVIDE AND CONQUER” with the Dims? Apparently so, and to the detriment of Phil Angelides.

Flap continues to handicap and easy re-election for Arnold, despite lack of enthusiam from his own party.

    Stay tuned…….

California Election 2006 Watch: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger May Endorse Some Democrats – Well, Maybe?

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger waves as he campaigns at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Antioch, Calif., Thursday, June 8, 2006. Schwarzenegger is campaigning in several California cities after he won the Republican nomination for governor on Tuesday.

The Sacramento Bee: Schwarzenegger may endorse some Democrats

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday there is a possibility that he might endorse Democratic candidates in other statewide political races.

“If I like someone, absolutely,” the Republican governor said in response to a reporter’s question inside the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall at a campaign even in the Delta town near the banks of the San Joaquin River. “Let’s see. But right now, I’m just thinking about moving the state forward.”

    But, upon further reflection……..

Schwarzenegger’s campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, said in an interview later, however, that the governor has endorsed all of the down-ticket Republican candidates – Tom McClintock for lieutenant governor, Chuck Poochigian for attorney general, Bruce McPherson for secretary of state, Tony Strickland for controller, Claude Parrish for treasurer and Steve Poizner for insurance commissioner.

The campaign left open the possibility that Schwarzenegger might endorse U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her re-election bid against Republidcan challenger Richard Mountjoy.

“Like most Californians, he thinks Dianne Feinstein is a great senator,” Schmidt said of the governor.

And Schwarzenegger kicks his Republican base in the groin again.

Wait until Angelides and the public employee unions start running those negative ads against Arnold and then Schwarzenegger may need his GOP base.

The Governator makes it very hard for a conservative to vote for him.

California Primary Election 2006 Results Watch: Rob Reiner’s Proposition 82 Preschool Initiative LOSES BIG

Prop. 82 was spawned by Reiner, who in 1998 led the successful tobacco tax initiative known as Proposition 10, which provides about $550 million a year in “First Five” funding for early childhood programs.

San Francisco Chronicle: Measure to tax rich for preschool for all heading for defeat

A pitch for universal preschool that had split parents, business interests and members of political parties appeared headed for defeat Tuesday night after a hard-fought campaign.

Proposition 82 would have placed California in the forefront of a growing national movement to provide publicly supported preschool.

Supporters of the initiative called it the best fix for a struggling K-12 system by giving all 4-year-olds the basic skills needed to succeed in school. But opponents warned it could merely expand a failed state education bureaucracy and said voters needed to read the fine print of an initiative with natural appeal.

With 44 percent of votes counted statewide, the measure was losing by a margin of 59 percent to 41 percent.

Prop. 82 champion Rob Reiner sounded defeated as he addressed cheering supporters at a Los Angeles hotel Tuesday night.

“Right now, it doesn’t look good, but it doesn’t matter,” the Hollywood director said. “Win or lose, we have raised the profile of the importance of early childhood education, and it will never go away.”

Reiner called on opponents who said they supported the idea of publicly supported preschool — just not the proposition’s details — to help craft an alternative.

    Opponents were optimistic.

“We’re feeling pretty confident the results will hold up,” said Kathy Fairbanks, a spokeswoman for the No on 82 campaign. “Voters rejected a tax increase to create a $2.4 billion preschool bureaucracy.”

The measure would have levied an additional 1.7 percent tax on the incomes of couples who make more than $800,000 and individuals who make more than $400,000, starting Jan. 1, 2007. Preschools could apply to begin using the funding in 2010.

An estimated 62 to 65 percent of California 4-year-olds now attend some form of preschool, but the proposition’s backers said many of those programs are of low quality and would be replaced by better schools with more highly trained teachers.

Reiner and his LEFT Hollywood friends lost big time with this tax the rich universal preschool scheme.

Everyone knows that preschool is good for children.

And everyone knows that California public schools are some of the USA’s worst. And Reiner wanted to create another under-performing school bureaucracy.

California voters said NO and in a big way.

    The Initiative:

    PROPOSITION 82

OFFICIAL TITLE AND SUMMARY Three stars

    Prepared by the Attorney General

Preschool Education. Tax on Incomes Over $400,000 for Individuals; $800,000 for Couples. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute.

    • Establishes a right to voluntary preschool for all four-year old children.
    • Funded by a 1.7% tax on individual incomes above $400,000; $800,000 for couples.
    • Administered by the state Superintendent of Public Instruction and county school superintendents.
    • Directs counties to prepare reports on curricula, outreach, facilities, childcare coordination,
    budgeting, teacher recruitment and pay.
    • Limits administrative expenses; requires program audits.
    • Requires state Superintendent to develop a preschool teaching credential with financial aid
    for credential students.
    • Excludes revenue from appropriation limits, Proposition 98 calculations.

Summary of Legislative Analyst’s Estimate of Net State and Local Government Fiscal Impact:

    • Increased state revenues of about $2.1 billion in 2007–08, growing annually with the economy
to around $2.6 billion in 2010–11, when the preschool program would be open to all 4-year olds in the state.
    • Revenues would be used solely for new state preschool program and would be spent to run
the program, pay for facilities, train teachers, and provide an operating reserve

    The results:

    Yes: 1,577,048 – 39.1 %

    No: 2,453,578 – 60.9 %

The Hollywood Left and Rob Reiner were repudiated at the polls.

State Treasurer Phil Angelides defeated Controller Steve Westly in a bitter primary battle, and the Democrats turned their attention to defeating a wounded but rebounding Republican Gov.
    Arnold Schwarzenegger in the fall.

With 94 percent of precincts reporting, Angelides had 931,220 votes, or 48 percent, to Westly’s 855,320 votes, or 44 percent.

California Democrats vote LEFT and pick California Treasurer Phil Angelides who is Gray Davis in a “GEEK” outfit.

Arnold should be able to cruise on his way to re-election.

    Why?

    Angelides supports:

    1. Tax Increases

    2. California Driver’s Licenses for Illegal Aliens

    3. In-State Tuition for Illegal Alien students

California Talk Radio will begin today to savage Angelides on the issues.

Schwarzenegger will raise the money and even Angelides’ wealthy developer friends and public employee unions will not be able to prevent a very credible GOP media campaign.

California Primary Election 2006 Results Watch: GOP Bilbray WINS CA-50

Brian Bilbray, Republican candidate in the 50th congressional district, center, addresses supporters as his daughter Briana Bilbray, left, son Patrick Bilbray, center left, and his wife his wife Karen Bilbray, right, look on at an election night party held at the Westgate Hotel in San Diego Tuesday, June 6, 2006.

ASSociated Press: Former GOP Rep. wins Calif. House race

A former Republican congressman narrowly beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the House seat once held by jailed Randy “Duke” Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall’s vote.

Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious special election race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bilbray had 56,130 votes, or 50 percent. Busby trailed with 51,292 votes, or 45 percent. “I think that we’re going back to Washington,” Bilbray told cheering supporters.

The race — one of dozens of contests Tuesday in eight states — was viewed by Democrats as an opportunity to capture a solidly Republican district and build momentum on their hopes to capture control of the House.

If this election is an example or a portent for November 2006, the GOP will handily retain control of the House in November.

However, the margin of victory for Bilbray was 5-6 points lower than what President Bush carried the district in 2004. So, there is work for the GOP.

But, the main thrust of Democrat Party Mo has been STALLED……

The Democrat Pary “Culture of Corrupion” is DEAD.

    Speaker Hastert’s statement is here:

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert made the following statement upon hearing that Brian Bilbray won California’s 50th Congressional seat:

“I want to congratulate Brian Bilbray on his victory in a hard fought race where voters clearly sided with local issues of protecting the homeland, growing the economy and securing the borders over a national Democratic agenda of higher taxes and border insecurity. I look forward to working with Brian on these issues in the House of Representatives.”

Watch immigration reform (illegal aliens) as a MAJOR issue for the GOP in the Fall. Bilbray ran on “No Amnesty” and heavily criticized the Senate bill with the appropach favored by President Bush.

Former Rep. Brian Bilbray was leading Democrat Francine Busby in the solidly Republican San Diego-area district about 30 miles north of the Mexican border. The immigration debate and a GOP corruption scandal dominated the campaign for the House seat held by Randy “Duke” Cunningham before he went to prison for bribery.

Tuesday’s victor will serve the remaining seven months of Cunningham’s term.

With 11 percent of precincts reporting in absentee voting, Bilbray had 20,448 votes, or 51 percent, compared with 17,329 votes, or 43 percent, for Busby.

Busby, a local school board member who ran against Cunningham in 2004, focused her campaign on public dissatisfaction with the Bush administration and the GOP-led Congress. She assailed Bilbray for working as a lobbyist in Washington and routinely referred to him as “lobbyist Bilbray.”

Democrats spent nearly $2 million on the high-stakes contest, and the GOP spent more than $4 million. President Bush and first lady Laura Bush recorded automated telephone messages for Bilbray. A mass e-mailing from Sen. John Kerry, the party’s 2004 presidential candidate, was sent last week to more than 100,000 supporters, urging them to help get out the vote. Al Gore also recorded a phone message telling Democrats to go to the polls.

It looks like the GOP and Brian Bilbray have held the seat.

The results can be viewed throughout the night and morning here.
