AP: Theory that U.S. orchestrated Sept. 11 attacks ‘not absurd’: Venezuela

President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that it’s at least plausible that the U.S. government was involved in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Chavez did not specifically accuse the U.S. government of having a hand in the Sept. 11 attacks, but rather suggested that theories of U.S. involvement bear examination.

The Venezuelan leader, an outspoken critic of U.S. President George W. Bush, was reacting to a television report investigating a theory that the Twin Towers were brought down with explosives after hijacked airplanes crashed into them in 2001.

“The hypothesis is not absurd . . . that those towers could have been dynamited,” Chavez said in a speech to supporters. “A building never collapses like that, unless it’s with an implosion.”

“The hypothesis that is gaining strength . . . is that it was the same U.S. imperial power that planned and carried out this terrible terrorist attack or act against its own people and against citizens of all over the world,” Chavez said.

“Why? To justify the aggressions that immediately were unleashed on Afghanistan, on Iraq.”

AP: Rival admits leaking Schwarzenegger tape

The campaign of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Democratic rival acknowledged Tuesday that it downloaded — and leaked to the media — a recording of a private meeting in which the governor described a Hispanic legislator as having a “very hot” personality.

But Cathy Calfo, campaign manager for Democrat Phil Angelides, said the campaign had done nothing wrong because the file was available publicly on the governor’s Web site.

“No one hacked,” Calfo said at a news conference to address the role played by the Angelides campaign, first reported by The Sacramento Bee. “They accessed information that was available to the public.”

Schwarzenegger spokesman Adam Mendelsohn said someone would have had to snoop to find the audio file.

“The file that was leaked to the Los Angeles Times was in a private area of the governor’s server not accessible to the public without manipulation of information,” he said.

Phil Angelides has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. The Flap amounted to not much but this revelation on how Angelides’ staff HACKED the Governor’s website will SINK his campaign like a stone.

AP: Syrians fight off attack on U.S. Embassy

Syrian guards foiled an attempt by suspected al-Qaida-linked militants to blow up the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday, exchanging fire outside the compound’s walls with gunmen shouting “God is great” who tried to storm in with automatic weapons and hand grenades.

No Americans were hurt and the embassy was not damaged in the brazen, midmorning attack, which came amid high tension between Washington and Damascus. But the assault could highlight the Syrian regime’s weakening grip on militants, who have battled Syrian security forces repeatedly in recent years.

Sunni Muslim extremists such as al-Qaida fiercely despise President Bashar Assad’s regime because of its secular ideology and because his father, the late President Hafez Assad, led a crackdown on Muslim fundamentalists that killed thousands in the city of Hama in 1982. They also reject Assad’s rule because he belongs to the Shiite Alawite sect of Islam.

Syria helps repel the Al-Qaeda THUGS who trie to storm the United States Embassy today, yet Syria is a police state which allows Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad to be based there.

Go figure.

Syria is a state sponsor of terror and if the Syrians cannot protect the American Embassy from terrorist acts Syria’s ambassador to the United States should be sent packing and the United States should close the embassy.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but suspicion immediately fell on a little-known al-Qaida offshoot called Jund al-Sham, Arabic for Soldiers of Syria.

Syria’s ambassador to the U.S., Imad Moustapha, told The Associated Press it was too early to say but “it’s logically possible” Jund al-Sham was responsible.

If confirmed, it would be the boldest and most sophisticated attack yet by Jund al-Sham.

AP: 3 killed outside U.S. embassy in Syria

Islamic militants attempted to storm the U.S. Embassy in a brazen attack Tuesday using automatic rifles, hand grenades and at least one van rigged with explosives, the government said. Syrian security forces killed three of the attackers.

The assailants apparently did not breach the high walls surrounding the white embassy compound in a diplomatic neighborhood of Damascus. But a Chinese diplomat was slightly injured by a stray bullet during the attack, China’s government news agency said.

A witness said one Syrian guard outside the embassy also was killed, but the government did not immediately confirm that. At the embassy in Damascus, as at most American embassies worldwide, a local guard force patrols outside the compound’s walls while U.S. Marine guards are mostly responsible for guarding classified documents and fighting off attackers inside the compound.

Witnesses also said the gunmen tried to throw hand grenades into the embassy compound, shouting “Allah Akbar!” or “God is great!” It was not clear if any of the grenades made it over the walls, which are about 8 feet high.

If Syrian cannot maintain security against Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda type cells in Damascus then the United States should pull their diplomats home and kick the Syrian ambassador’s ASS out of the United States.

Al Qaeda threatens more terror attacks

“We have repeatedly warned you and offered a truce with you. Now we have all the legal and rational justification to continue to fight you until your power is destroyed or you give in and surrender,” al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri said in one of three videos the group released yesterday.

“The days are pregnant and giving birth to new events,” he said and warned that Persian Gulf countries and Israel would be al Qaeda’s next targets. He accused the governments of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia of supporting Israel’s war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
