Fox News: Longtime Aide to Jimmy Carter Resigns, Claims Carter’s New Book Is Filled With Factual Errors

A longtime aide to Jimmy Carter has resigned from the Carter Center think tank, calling the former president’s new book on Israel and the Arabs one-sided and filled with errors.

Kenneth Stein, the Carter Center’s first executive director and founder of its Middle East program, sent a letter that bluntly criticized the book to Carter and others.

Stein wrote that the book, “Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid,” was replete with factual errors, material copied from other sources and “simply invented segments,” according to an excerpt of the letter published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Deanna Congileo, Carter’s spokeswoman, said the former president stands by the book.

Stein, who is also director of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel at Emory University, did not immediately return a call Wednesday.

Carter issued a brief statement saying that Stein had not been actively involved with the center for more than 12 years and was not involved with the new book. Carter did not directly address Stein’s allegations.

Powerline has more. And at Huffington Post, Alan Dershowitz details many of the errors he found in Carter’s “indecent book.”

Isn’t former President Jimmy Carter ready for retirement yet? He was the WORST American President in the 20th century and he continues on and on with misguided policies and outright lies.

    Jimmy give it a rest.

    Who publishes his crap anyway?

Robert Gates Watch: Gates Confirmed as Secretary of Defense

    gatesdecember6aweb

Defense Secretary-designate Robert Gates, President Bush’s choice to replace Donald Rumsfeld, testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

AP: Gates confirmed as secretary of defense

The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to confirm Robert Gates as defense secretary, with Democrats and Republicans portraying him as the man who will help overhaul President Bush’s Iraq policies.

The 95-2 vote was a victory for Bush, who named Gates to replace Donald H. Rumsfeld at the
Pentagon on Nov. 8, a day after voters gave Democrats control of Congress for next year.

Even so, much of Gates’ support stemmed from his pledges to consider new options in Iraq. The vote coincided with the release of an independent study lambasting Bush’s approach to the war, increasing pressure on the White House to change course.

“I am confident that his leadership and capabilities will help our country meet its current military challenges and prepare for emerging threats of the 21st century,” Bush said in a statement after the Senate vote.

He said Gates had shown during his confirmation hearing this week before the
Senate Armed Services Committee that he is “an experienced, qualified, and thoughtful man who is well respected by members of both parties and is committed to winning the war on terror.”

But, look who voted against Gate’s confirmation.

Two Bush allies, Sens. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and Jim Bunning, R-Ky., voted against Gates, citing his criticism of the war and his view that the U.S. should engage Iran as part of a solution.

“Mr. Gates has repeatedly criticized our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan without providing any viable solutions to the problems our troops currently face,” Bunning said. “We need a secretary of defense to think forward with solutions and not backward on history we cannot change.”

Santorum, who lost his re-election bid last month, said the U.S. needs to confront Iran rather than “engaging someone who is at war with us. I think he is in error.”

Hugh Hewitt has Gates and Byrd on Iran and Syria

The most important exchanges from the Gates confirmation hearings today came when Senator Robert Byrd questioned the Secretary-designate on Iran and Syria. Not only did Mr. Gates answer Senator Byrd’s hypotheticals in ways that had to encourage the mullahs of Iran and the thugs of Syria, he did so in addition to questioning the president’s authority under the AUMF to pursue any terrorists operating out of Iranian or Syria:…..

    Read it all…….

    More on Gates and Iran:

The real news came from his answers on Iran, which raise serious questions about the direction of US policy.

When asked by a senator whether he thought Iranian President Ahmadinejad was “kidding” when he denied the Holocaust and called for “wiping Israel off the map,” Gates responded: “No, I don’t think he’s kidding. But I think that there are, in fact, higher powers in Iran than he, than the president. And … while they are certainly pressing, in my opinion, for a nuclear capability, I think that they would see it in the first instance as a deterrent.

“They are surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons – Pakistan to their east, the Russians to the north, the Israelis to the west, and us in the Persian Gulf.”

The senator followed up, “Can you assure the Israelis that they will not attack Israel with a nuclear weapon, if they acquire one?”

Gates responded coldly, “No, sir, I don’t think that anybody can provide that assurance.”

    Read it all….

Flap would not have nominated nor voted to confirm Dr. Gates.

Is President Bush going backwards? Or is he attempting to accomodate the newly empowered Democrats?

Bush’s conduct after the November election is like a deer in the roadway startled by car headlights.

The Mullahs and Jihadists must be laughing their asses off and LICKING THEIR CHOPS to pick at the GREAT SATAN and Bush.

Iraq War Watch: From Iraq – The Iraq Study Group Report is “UNFAIR”

    iraqdecember6gweb

Iraq Study Group co-chairmen former Secretary of State James Baker(L) and former Chairman of the House International Relations Committee Lee Hamilton conduct a news conference by the group on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Baker said there is “no magic formula” to solve Iraq’s problems, as he unveiled a report on the way forward in the war-torn country.

AFP: ‘This is unfair’ say Iraqis on US panel threat

A call for President George W. Bush to reduce US support to Iraq if Baghdad fails to improve security drew a sour response from Iraqi politicians, who said Washington had an obligation to back their government.

“The US calls itself an occupying force in Iraq and, according to the Geneva Conventions, if you are an occupier then you are responsible for the country,” said parliamentarian Mahmud Othman, a Kurd.

“They have no right to to do this. This is unfair.”

Bassim Ridha, a top advisor to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the White House has to support Baghdad “all the way”.

“If they do not support the government then it will look as if they do not do what they preach,” Ridha said. “We need their support to go forward.”

A high-level, bipartisan panel urged Bush Wednesday to act to halt a “grave and deteriorating” crisis in Iraq by holding talks with Iran and Syria and starting to withdraw US combat forces.

The report said Washington must step up action — including the threatened reduction of political, military and economic support — to make the Iraqi government improve security.

Haidar al-Abadi, a member of Maliki’s Dawa party and close associate to the prime minister, said most of the panel’s recommendations, including a dialogue with Iran and Syria and increased training for Iraqi security forces, had been expected.

But the threat to reduce support was new.

“We were told there would not be pressure as such,” said Abadi. “In our dialogue with the US administration, we said that we would work together.”

    Well, there you have it.

The Iraq Study Group report is viewed as UNFAIR to our Iraq allies.

Iraq War Watch: Iraq Study Group – Try Diplomacy and then Cut and Run

    iraqdecember6dweb

President George W. Bush (C) speaks to the press after receiving the official report of the Iraq Study Group in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, December 6, 2006.

AP: Panel: Try diplomacy in Iraq, then leave

The United States faces a “grave and deteriorating” situation after nearly four years of war in
Iraq, a high-level commission warned bluntly on Wednesday, prodding President Bush to launch a diplomatic offensive to stabilize the country and allow withdrawal of most combat troops by early 2008.

“There is no path that can guarantee success, but the prospects can be improved,” the commission said after its review of a war that has taken the lives of more than 2,900 U.S. troops and grown so unpopular at home that it helped trigger a Democratic takeover of Congress in last month’s elections.

The commission recommended the United States reduce “political, military or economic support” for Iraq if the government in Baghdad cannot make substantial progress toward providing for its own security. Portions of the report were obtained by The Associated Press.

President Bush received the report in an early morning meeting at the White House with commission members. He pledged to treat each proposal seriously and act in a “timely fashion.”

Al Gore Watch: Gore – Iraq War “The Worst Strategic Mistake in the Entire History of the United States”

    goredecember6aweb

Al Gore, center, holds up the Environmental Leadership Award which was presented to him by actors Mary Steenburgen, left, and Ted Danson during the annual leadership awards event from California League of Conservation Voters in Culver City, Calif., Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006.

ABC News: Gore to Bush on Iraq: It’s Not About You

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Calling the Iraq war “the worst strategic mistake in the entire history of the United States” and “worse than a civil war,” former Vice President Gore urged President Bush to find a way to get U.S. troops out of Iraq “as quickly as possible without making the situation worse” while appearing this morning on NBC’s “Today.”

“I would urge the President to try to separate out the personal issues of being blamed in history for his mistake and instead recognizing that it is not about him. It’s about our country,” Gore said in an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer.

When asked if he would pull U.S. troops out of Iraq even it was seen as a defeat for the U.S., Gore dodged the question, saying if he were president, he would have “the full flow of information” and he would be able to test these ideas.

On the question of whether he would run for president in 2008, Gore once again said he is involved in a different kind of campaign – to educate people about climate change – and that he isn’t planning to do so but he hasn’t completely ruled it out.

    Oh Please……

Iraq War Watch: Iraq Study Group Recommends Engagement with Syria and Iran

    iraqdecember6aweb

A man looks at a burning minibus after a suicide bomb attack in Baghdad’s Sadr city, December 6, 2006.

Reuters: Iraq group recommends engagement with Syria, Iran

A bipartisan panel recommended to President George W. Bush on Wednesday that the United States directly engage with Syria and Iran to help resolve the Iraq conflict, the White House said.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the report also recommended that the U.S. military launch a rapid effort to train Iraqi forces to defend their country. It recommends no specific timetable for U.S. troop reductions, he said.

Reading from the report, Snow said the document encourages the United States to “engage directly with Iran, Syria in order to try to obtain their commitment to constructive policies toward Iraq and other regional issues.”

“In engaging Syria and Iran, the United States should consider incentives as well as disincentives in seeking constructive results,” the report said.

    What a JOKE.

Syria is attempting to stage a coup in Lebanon and arming Iraqi insurgents/terrorists.

Does the Iraq Study Group propose we help these miscreants?

The United States has been negotiating with Iran for months on the Iran nuclear program.

    Where have those negotiations gone?

    NOWHERE

What makes anyone think that talking to Iran will be anything more than another ploy to allow Iran to go nuclear.

Israel is already fearful and consideration of further Iranian engagement may push them into military action sooner rather than later. Israel will not sit still while Ahmadinejad boasts that he will wipe Israel off the map.

Flap remembers Senator Joe Lieberman saying engagement with Iran and Syria over Iraq is like having arsonists negotiate with the fire department in order to put out a fire.

On first take, the President is not accepting this argument:

Snow offered his own description of this section: “This is not talk for talk’s sake. This would be, according to the Iraq Study Group, diplomatic engagement but there would be a requirement on the part of the Syrian and the Iranians that they act, that they demonstrate good will … In other words this is not a desire for empty diplomacy.”

But, after Secretary of Defense nominee Robert Gates testimony yesterday who the hell knows what W is thinking?

    Stay tuned…….
