John McCain Wraps Up Nomination – When Does He Go After Obama?

Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., gestures during a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, in Washington. McCain’s rival for the Republican nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, pulled out of the race Thursday during an earlier speech at CPAC.

With Mitt Romney’s suspension of his campaign today, John McCain becomes the presumptive nominee for the GOP. Flap supposes GOP Party leader pressure will be applied to Mike Huckabee who will also exit soon – stage right.

There is little doubt that McCain would run strongest against Hillary Clinton.

Why, you ask?

It would be easier to re-unite the GOP, fundraise and appeal to centrist independent voters because Hillary is viewed as a left-wing partisan.

So, does McCain immediately start with OPPO (Opposition Research) pieces against Barack? How does McCain intercede in the TIED Democrat race without appearing too heavy handed.

Stay tuned…….

If anyone heard Senator (Dr) Tom Coburn introduce Sen McCain today at CPAC, he would go to the top of the list for VP consideration. He is a conservative and is a huge proponent of ending earmarks and pork along with shrinking Government. Dr. Tom is strong on defense and the WOT and believes in strict constructionist judges. Great fiscal conservative.

Well, just by winning, he’s helped clear the way for Obama – At least in states where independants are allowed to vote in the Dem primary. One of the main reasons Obama came up short in New Hampshire was because McCain pulled the independants.

As for oppo reserach, I think it’s too early for that. Besides, both Obama and Hillary are doing a splendid job of tearing each other apart. I think McCain should use this time to collect funds. He’s going to be at a disadvantage, money-wise, if he doesn’t get a big headstart now.

Money is important and Johnny Mac now has some time to work the special interests and the GOP base.

But, he also has innate name recognition which will also help.

I think McCain should throw a few negative tid bits to Hillary to help her win.

Coburn is another senator. Not the best to have two senators on the ticket, even though that may turn out to be the case with the democrat ticket.

  • Flap

But, Coburn will work to solidify the South.

Pawlenty may be better as the Governor of Minnesota and put the upper Midwest in play.

Rick Perry may be OK as the Governor of Texas.

    Who would you pick, Dennis?

Of course I would like to Rudy as VP, but I suppose I am just dreaming since I am not yet over the failure of his campaign ( which I don’t fully understand ).

Mark Sanford, the governor of South Carolina would be a good choice.

  • Flap

Mark Sanford would be an excellent choice.

I am thinking that Rudy really did not enjoy running for the Presidency and did not want it after he started fading in the polls.

    Falp,

You may be right. From the little I have seen of him since he withdrew, he seems very happy. Perhaps he has a different perspective on life since 9/11; his cancer scare; and life with Judith whom he seems to care for very much.

He ceratinly is doing well financially, so maybe he wants to stay in the private sector.

Some day we will learn the real story.

The Presidential campaign is a real grind and I think after almost a year of non-stop campaigning he grew tired of it. I know I would.

McCain stayed in New Hampshire and had a more balanced and reasonable life during the run up to the first primaries and was smart in a respect of preserving his quality of life.

Romney just spent lots of his money which made life easier for himself.
