Air America Radio Scandel: New York Times Corrects Al Franken Quote

Flap previously reported that the New York Times got their quotes of Air America Radio host Al Franken wrong.

Now, the New York Times has issued a correction.

An article yesterday about state and city investigations of a loan made by a Bronx social service agency to the liberal radio network Air America quoted incorrectly from comments made on the air by Al Franken, the host of an Air America program. Referring to Evan M. Cohen, a former official of the network whom Mr. Franken accused of having engineered the loan, from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, Mr. Franken said: “I don’t know why they did it, and I don’t know where the money went. I don’t know if it was used for operations, which I imagine it was. I think he was robbing Peter to pay Paul.” (He did not say: “I don’t know why he did it. I don’t know where the money went. I don’t know if it was used for operations. I think he was borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.”) (Go to Article)

But, Michelle Malkin is correct that the Times has not corrected its false assertion that the Franken quote came from a transcript of the broadcast provided by the NYC Department of Investigation.

Air America Scandal: Al Franken Blows It Off

The Radio Equalizer -Brian Maloney has Mr. Subliminal Returns! Franken Transcript Reveals Much About Scandal.

That’s because slipped into Franken’s rambling set of excuses over why he and Air America are not responsible for $875,000 in taxpayer funds, diverted from a Bronx-based community center, a key admission is made.

Take a look at this snippet, with a full Radio Equalizer-produced transcript below, (bold emphasis mine):

And he uh, borrowed (laughter) $875,000 from, I don’t know why they did it, and I don’t know where the money went, I don’t know if it was used for operations (softer, faster), which I imagine it was.

Care to elaborate on this, Mr. Franken?

That’s a big point to bury in your public statement.

Does that mean you were paid with public money, intended for an inner-city community center?

For two weeks, we’ve been cautioned to be careful about assuming the $875,000 actually went into Air America’s account, funding network operations.

And along comes Franken himself, making it appear to be true!

Here is a complete transcript of the on-air admission by Franken.

Michelle Malkin has more on this scandel AIR ENRON: HEADS ROLL, VICTIMS SHAFTED

    Acting executive director Lorraine Corva

The New York Post reports this morning on a drastic shake-up at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, the Bronx non-profit charity ensnared in smelly “loan” schemes with the liberal Air America radio network:

The Bronx social-services organization that made a controversial loan to the Air America radio network has been rocked by more high-level staff departures, sources said.

Just days after the executive director abruptly resigned following Post reports that the club had provided $875,000 in bizarre loans to Air America, two other top officials at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club have quit.

Acting executive director Lorraine Corva — who took over after Charles Rosen suddenly resigned last week — will be leaving her job on Aug. 26, sources said.

Assistant executive director Jeff Aulenback also resigned, effective immediately, sources said.

Their departures from the embattled social-services agency are tied to the ongoing fallout from the highly unusual and possibly improper loan to Air America, as well as other dubious fiscal practices, sources said.

A spokesman for the club declined to comment on why the two were leaving.

Corva made $181,000 a year, and Aulenback was taking home more than $150,000 annually, accord- ing to recent records.

A board member at Gloria Wise, which is struggling to stay afloat and has scaled back its programs for kids, has told The Post that the board was hoodwinked by Rosen into making the highly unusual loans to Air America.

The Boys & Girls Club is funded almost entirely from grants and government contracts.

“We’re not commenting on anything right now because of the delicate nature of negotiations to get the money back” from Air America, said spokesman Jim Grossman.

The left-wing radio network, which showcases Al Franken, last Friday made a $50,000 repayment on the loan to an escrow account controlled by the station’s lawyer.

“The [city] Department of Investigation advised Air America to repay $875,000 into an escrow account from which no money can be disbursed without our approval,” said DOI spokeswoman Emily Gest.

“Air America has not followed that recommendation.”

But an Air America official told The Post yesterday that both sides had agreed to a payment plan months ago and that they were on schedule with their payments.

That was news to the Boys & Girls Club. “Air America has agreed in principle to give the money, but nothing has been finalized yet,” Grossman said yesterday.

“They haven’t agreed how and when to do it.”

Along with the DOI,state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer also opened an investigation into the case.

Wow! Al Franken blows it off and Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club goes under.

Goish, Al a big 50K payment when you owe 875K.

Pay them the money dumbnuts – they need it.

Get George Soros or another Leftie benefactor to bail your sorry ass out or file for bankruptcy.

North Carolina bloggers John in NC and Confederate Yankee are demanding answers about MSM silence from their local newspaper. As a result, Raleigh News and Observer executive editor Melanie Sill has asked the Associated Press to move a story on the scandal.

Minnesotans are on their local media’s case, too.

Mark Steyn explans why the same MSM outlets that are ignoring Air America’s financial shenanigans spilled so much ink on the liberal radio network last year:

The basic problem for AA is that it signed high-priced talent to an untested business model that never lived up to the hype. Rush and most other successful “right talk” started small and grew naturally. Air America announced it was big, CNN and the other gullible boosters took it at its word, and, when it became clear, there was simply not enough audience for what it was offering, it was inevitable that slyer minds would have to find a way to circumvent the shortfall.

Then there’s this intriguing e-mail I received last night concerning the whereabouts of the elusive former AAR/Gloria Wise official, Evan Montvel Cohen. Spread the word far and wide:

Thought you should know that Evan Cohen, believe it or not, has relocated to Hawaii and had been applying for Development Director positions at local nonprofits. I was involved as a part of an interview team in which we interviewed him a couple of months ago…

…Fortunately, we did some research on him…and eliminated him from the process. I am fearful that some unsuspecting nonprofit could hire him, so have been trying to get the word out to folks. Chances are, he has already moved out of the state. If not, hopefully, your article will help!

Find Evan Cohen and put him before a New York and Federal Grand Jury.

This scandel should be on the front page of the New York Times and Washington Post.

Flap wonders why these so-called investigative papers can carry the Karl Rove leaks but ignores an out-right theft by a left-wing media organization.

    Hummmmmmmm!

Air America Radio Scandel: Al Franken Replies

The New York Sun has Franken Unaware Of Ex-Colleague’s Alleged Loans.

The comedian Al Franken, Air America Radio’s most prominent host, said yesterday that he did not know whether the hundreds of thousands of dollars apparently lent to the radio network by a Bronx social-service organization had indeed been relayed to Air America by Evan Montvel Cohen. Mr. Cohen simultaneously served as director of the liberal network and development director of the nonprofit Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club.

Mr. Franken said he has learned details of the story only in the last week. He said Piquant LLC, current owner and operator of the radio network, found a record of the transfers while conducting a “forensic” investigation into the finances of the previous owner, Progress Media, which was run by Mr. Cohen. That internal probe was conducted before the city agency became involved, Mr. Franken said. Efforts by The New York Sun to reach Mr. Cohen for comment in recent days have been unsuccessful.

A Piquant spokesman said yesterday that Gloria Wise would be compensated regardless of the amount of money it transferred. Mr. Franken said he did not know if money from Gloria Wise had been absorbed by the network and used to finance its operations. He said Piquant’s payments to Gloria Wise were scheduled to begin this month but were prevented from going through while the city investigation continued.

Right and it seems that Al Franken is good at passing the buck. This from the Department of Investigation.

A spokesman for the Department of Investigation, Keith Schwam, said that if Air America discovered the transfers before the city probe began, “They neglected to tell anyone at DOI or in the city about it.”

Ok, so Franken wants to blame Cohen, whose wherabouts are unknown, and complained of brain cancer. This isn’t a radio enterprise but a ship of FOOLS.

Mr. Franken said that around the time of Air America’s launch in March 2004, Mr. Cohen said the radio network could survive for three years without making a profit.” It turned out to be three weeks,” Mr. Franken said. “We were all shocked.” Mr. Franken said his most “charitable” interpretation of the Gloria Wise transfers to Air America was that Mr. Cohen had a “dream and tried to keep it going.”

Members of the Gloria Wise executive committee described to the Sun transfers from the club to Mr. Cohen and to Air America that totaled $875,000. They said Sunday that one reason Mr. Cohen cited when asking for personal loans was that he needed money for chemotherapy because he suffered from brain cancer.

Mr. Franken said he did not know whether his former colleague had the disease, but he recalled that Mr. Cohen, a native of Guam who is 39, referred repeatedly to it. For example, Mr. Franken said, he’d complain to Mr. Cohen that studio equipment wasn’t working, “and he’d say, ‘You know, I have brain cancer.'”

“Brain cancer,” Mr. Franken said, “seemed to be his answer to everything.” Mr. Franken said he didn’t know Mr. Cohen’s current whereabouts.

Franken would be probably better off if he saves his comments for the New York and federal investigations which are proceeding.

Next, undoubtedly the ACLU will come to Air America’s rescue and they will all plead the 5th.

Or……blame it on the missing guy with brain cancer.

Michelle Malkin has AIR ENRON: AL FRANKEN SPEAKS.

So: by Franken’s own admission, Air America’s current owners have known for months that their network received a large cash infusion from Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, a non-profit organization funded primarily by government grants. Presumably, they also knew that Gloria Wise’s director of development at the time the money was transferred was also Air America’s chairman at the time–a glaring conflict of interest. According to Franken, the owners still don’t know whether that cash was ultimately placed in Air America’s coffers or diverted somewhere else. (Franken seems to be hinting that the money was embezzled by Cohen.) Yet even as the radio network’s hosts railed on about Enron, it didn’t occur to any of Air America’s accountants, managers, or investors to mention the sketchy Gloria Wise transaction to law enforcement officials until after the city launched its investigation.

Despite the near-total MSM blackout, this story just keeps getting more and more interesting

Comedian Al Franken smiles during his radio show in a Washington file photo from Feb. 10, 2005. Air America Radio, a liberal talk radio network, said Monday that it had reached a tentative agreement to be sold to the founder of a New York area real estate company. The network also said that Al Franken, its longtime headline personality, would depart next month.

Los Angeles Times: Air America Radio to be sold; Franken to leave

Air America Radio, a liberal talk radio network, said today that it had reached a tentative agreement to be sold to the founder of a New York area real estate company. The network also said that Al Franken, its longtime headline personality, would depart next month.

The agreement with Stephen Green, the founder and chairman of SL Green Realty Corp., appears to rescue the struggling network, which has been seeking a buyer since last fall when it filed for bankruptcy reorganization after reaching an impasse with one of its creditors.

No terms of the sale agreement were disclosed. Any sale would have to be approved by the bankruptcy court.

Green is the brother of Mark Green, a longtime New York politician who has also appeared frequently as a guest on Air America Radio.

The network said in a statement that Franken’s last day on the network would be Feb. 14, and that his 12pm-3pm ET time slot would be taken over by Portland, Ore.-based talk show host Thom Hartmann.

    FINALLY

    Air America has failed.

Air America, which does business as Piquant, LLC and is headquartered in New York City, currently produces 19 hours of original programming a day and is heard on 81 affiliates reaching 54 percent of the country. Air America affiliates reach 1.9 million listeners per week, Mon-Sun 6am-12m.

And Flap thought the LEFT were going to supplant Rush Limbaugh?

    Guess NOT……

Chirs, I bet Democratic POLS all across America wish those Obama Roanoke comments on business enterprise were NOT alive.

But, the unscripted Obama genie is now out of the bottle which should make for an interesting campaign.

A Roland Burris Disqualification Showdown Scenario – A Senate Validity Resolution?

Blagojevich Bobby Rush and Roland Burris

Rep. Bobby Rush speaks after Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich announces his choice of former Ill. Attorney General Roland Burris, right, to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat

Yes, Harry Reid will manuver a Senate Resolution to study the validity of Roland Burris’ appointment to the U.S. Senate until his appointment by Rod Blagojevich is MOOT.

The first thing the Senate leadership plans to do is to demand, under Rule 2 of the Standing Rules of the Senate, a certificate containing “the name of the person elected or appointed, the date of the certificate, the name of the governor and the secretary of state signing and countersigning the same, and the State from which such Senator is elected or appointed.”

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has said that he does not intend to sign the certificate–but that may not be all that much of an impediment. It turns out that Blagojevich–like every other Governor, I’m told–has a set of certificates that are pre-signed by the Secretary of State, to be used in the event of an emergency. If Burris shows up with one of those, the Senate leadership intends to reject it. But Senate leaders also are preparing for the possibility that Burris will get a Writ of Mandamus ordering the Secretary of State to sign the certificate.

At that point, the first order of business for the Senate would be to vote on a resolution questioning the validity of Blagojevich’s appointment of Burris, and specifically, raising the question that the Governor asked for or received something of value in exchange for naming Burris. (There is, of course, no evidence that anything like this happened.) The resolution would be nondebatable and nonamendable, which means the Republican minority would not be allowed to attach, say, a separate resolution blocking Al Franken from being seated from Minnesota. What happens then? The whole thing would be sent to the Senate Rules and Administration Committee for “investigation.” Said investigation would have a time limit, specifically written to give the Illinois Legislature enough time to impeach Blagojevich, put Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn in the job, and get a new appointment.

The scenario is plausible and why it was floated to the left-supporting Time Magazine for comment and vetting. But, what is in Burris’ interest to not raise a stink on the floor and then immediately march over to the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge the entire process as a subterfuge?

Maybe President-Elect Obama can promise him the Ambassadorship to some vacation resort island country?

Or maybe the U.S. Senate Democrats can let it go and allow this seventy-three year old African-American to serve two years, then retire and then get a federal appointment?

The deals will be made this weekend.

Does Patrick Fitzgerald have his microphones turned on?

The Coleman – Franken Recount Has Started

    Norm-Coleman-and-Al-Franken

Senator Norm Coleman, R- Minnesota and Democrat contender Al Franken

Flap a little over an hour ago got off the phone with a California-based attorney working for the GOP regarding the Minnesota recount and…..

The recount has started in the Minnesota U.S. Senate race between incumbent Senator Norm Coleman and Democrat challenger Al Franken.

The recount plan has been approved.

In a meeting that lasted less than an hour today, the state Canvassing Board unanimously approved a plan to hand recount, beginning tomorrow morning, nearly 3 million ballots to determine who won the U.S. Senate race between Republican Norm Coleman, the incumbent, and Democrat Al Franken, the challenger.

The five-member panel also unanimously decided to take at least a few days to determine what to do about requests by the Franken campaign to review rejected absentee ballots and count any that were improperly voided.

Coleman leads by such a slim margin that a hand recount is mandatory. Coleman’s unofficial lead is now 215 votes, after results from audits — mini-recounts to determine voting machines’ accuracy — are counted.

The recount is slated to begin tomorrow morning, essentially resetting the race to 0-0, and will last at least though the beginning of December.

    Stay tuned……

John McCain Watch: Age and Health Questions Plague McCain

Senator John McCain campaigning in New Hampshire yesterday.

Age and Health Questions Hound McCain

John McCain, 70 and scarred, cannot deny his age. So he jokes about it. “I’m older than dirt, more scars than Frankenstein, but I learned a few things along the way,” quips the Republican presidential candidate, who tries to play down the ravages of time for the wisdom acquired over seven decades.

His body is battered from torture in Vietnam. The scar along his left cheek is a reminder of a different battle, with skin cancer. Yet, McCain packs his work days so tight that aides grouse. And the man who could be the oldest first-term president hiked the Grand Canyon from “rim to rim” last summer.

Despite McCain’s high-energy lifestyle, getting older begets questions about health. The four-term Arizona senator no doubt will have to prove to voters that he is physically and mentally up to the demanding job of president.

Flap knows that Senator McCain is too OLD to be President. The job is too demanding and stressful for a 70 year old man – irrespective of McCain’s past medical history.

Flap expects his President to be vigorous and alert to make the RIGHT decision.

    McCain doesn’t make it.

And the American people feel the same way:

Still, an aging candidate troubles some voters.

Two recent surveys found that people are less likely to vote for a presidential candidate who is older than 72 than they would a candidate who has been divorced twice and a candidate who is Mormon. Giuliani is on his third marriage; Romney is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In Michigan, Jerry Roe, a Republican who is a former state GOP executive director, backed McCain in 2000 but supports Romney this time. “McCain’s too old,” Roe said recently.

“He looks tired. He looks like he’s dragging,” added Chip Felkel, a GOP strategist in South Carolina who says he is not aligned with a candidate.

McCain is attempting to counter health and age skeptics.

But, Flap asks the reader: Look at the video above.
