U.S. offers aid to Abbas-led Palestinian government.

The United States joined the European Union on Monday in announcing its willingness to resume hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the new Palestinian government led by President Mahmoud Abbas. The commitment of financial and political support follows last week’s gunbattles between rival Palestinian factions that led to Hamas routing Fatah forces in Gaza loyal to Abbas and the crumbling of a Fatah-Hamas unity government.

In response, Abbas declared a state of emergency and appointed a new Cabinet of political independents based in the West Bank.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she spoke by phone with newly appointed Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Monday. “I told him that the United States would resume full assistance to the Palestinian government and normal government-to-government contacts,” Rice said.

Rice added that the United States will give up to $86 million to help build the government infrastructure, such as improving roads and providing drinking water. …

President Bush called Abbas on Monday and pledged his support to the president and “those Palestinian moderates who are working to better the lives of Palestinians and work toward a Palestinian state living side by side in peace with Israel,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

“Palestinian moderates”? It was Fatah’s Abbas who refused to disarm Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas and the “armed wing” of his own party, even after continued terrorist attacks. It was Fatah terrorists who claimed joint responsibility with Hamas for the suicide-bombing mother who murdered four people. Abbas has called Israel the “Zionist enemy”. It is Fatah whose name means “conquest” and whose logo still includes an AK-47 and a grenade.

There’s so little difference between Hamas and Fatah that you can barely tell them apart: Fatah photo and Hamas photo. The only real difference is that Hamas is more open about its intent to destroy Isreal.

    *********

You mean the ENEMY OF MY ENEMY IS MY FRIEND – so give them aid?

Sounds like United States policy with Saddam Hussein, Iraq and Iran.

New York Sun: Peace Corps Part of Edwards Terror Plan.

Senator Edwards is outlining a new national security strategy that includes the creation of a 10,000-person civilian peace corps to stem the tide of terrorism in weak and unstable countries. …The plan Mr. Edwards presented yesterday — which he dubbed “A Strategy to Shut Down Terrorists and Stop Terrorism Before It Starts” — calls for a 10,000-person “Marshall Corps” to deal with issues ranging from worldwide poverty and economic development to clean drinking water and micro-lending. He said investing in those areas would shore up weak nations and help ensure that terrorism does not take root there. That, he said, would allow the country to stop potential terrorists before they even join the ranks.

There are “thousands committed to violence” today, he said, and America needs to use all of its tools to go after them. But he said millions more people are “sitting on the fence” about whether to join those ranks. “We have to offer them a hand to our side instead of a shove to the other side of that fence,” he said.

Mr. Edwards proposed creating a Cabinet-level position to oversee the initiative, which he said would require international allies.
The president of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Clifford May, said he was “skeptical” of Mr. Edwards’s proposal.

“Humanitarian aid is a good thing. I approve of that. But it doesn’t really have much to do with the causes of terrorism,” Mr. May said. “Mohamed Atta, the lead terrorist on 9/11, was based in Germany, was well-educated. The causes of terrorism are several, but poverty is not one of them.”

And this from the one term trial lawyer Senator who said there is NO Global War on Terror.

Why is this MORON running for President?

    Cox & Forkum: Courting Disaster

FOX News: Charges Against Guantanamo Bay Detainees Dismissed.

Military judges dismissed charges Monday against a Guantanamo detainee who chauffeured Usama bin Laden and another who allegedly killed a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan, marking a stunning setback to Washington’s attempts to try detainees in military court. In back-to-back arraignments for Canadian Omar Khadr and Salim Ahmed Hamdan, of Yemen, the U.S. military’s cases against the alleged Al Qaeda figures dissolved because, the two judges said, the government had failed to establish jurisdiction.

They were the only two of the roughly 380 prisoners at Guantanamo charged with crimes, and the rulings stand to complicate efforts by the United States to try other suspected Al Qaeda and Taliban figures in military courts.

Hamdan’s military judge, Navy Capt. Keith Allred, said the detainee is “not subject to this commission” under legislation passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush last year. Hamdan is accused of chauffeuring bin Laden’s and being the Al Qaeda chief’s bodyguard.

The new Military Commissions Act, written to establish military trials after the U.S. Supreme Court last year rejected the previous system, is full of problems, defense attorneys argued. …

A Pentagon spokesman said the issue was little more than semantics.

Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon told The Associated Press said the entire Guantanamo system was set up to deal with people who act as “unlawful enemy combatants,” operating outside any internationally recognized military, without uniforms, military ranks or other things that make them party to the Geneva Conventions.

“It is our belief that the concept was implicit that all the Guantanamo detainees who were designated as ‘enemy combatants’ … were in fact unlawful,” Gordon said.

Sullivan said that reclassifying detainees as “unlawful,” will require a time-consuming overhaul of the whole system. But Gregory McNeal, a law professor at Pennsylvania State University, said nothing prevents the Defense Department from reconvening hearings for detainees headed to trial and declaring them to be “unlawful” combatants.

And to think that all of the Democrat Presidential candidates and Senator McCain on the GOP side wish to close GITMO and move these terrorists to the United States.

This would be an ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

    Cox & Forkum: Party Crasher

Moscow could aim nuclear weapons at targets in Europe as part of “retaliatory steps” if Washington proceeds with building a missile defense system on the continent, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

Speaking to foreign reporters days before he travels to Germany for the annual summit with President Bush and the other Group of Eight leaders, Putin assailed the White House plan to place a radar system in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in neighboring Poland. Washington says the system is needed to counter a potential threat from Iran.

In an interview released Monday, Putin suggested that Russia may respond to the threat by aiming its nuclear weapons at Europe.

“If a part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States appears in Europe and, in the opinion of our military specialists, will threaten us, then we will have to take appropriate steps in response. What kind of steps? We will have to have new targets in Europe,” Putin said, according to a transcript released by the Kremlin. These could be targeted with “ballistic or cruise missiles or maybe a completely new system” he said.

On Monday, Iran’s top security official called the U.S. plans for the missile defense shield a “joke,” saying Tehran’s missiles do not have the capability to reach Europe.

“Claims by U.S. officials that installing a missile defense system in Europe is aimed at confronting Iranian missiles and protecting Europe against Iran is the joke of the year,” Ali Larijani told the state-run IRNA news agency.

“The range of Iran’s missiles doesn’t reach Europe at all,” IRNA quoted Larijani as saying in Iran’s first public reaction to the plans. Larijani is secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the country’s top security decision-making body.

Iran is known to possess a medium-range ballistic missile called the Shahab-3 that has a range of at least 800 miles, capable of striking Israel. In 2005, Iranian officials said they had improved the range of the Shahab-3 to 1,200 miles.

The way Russia has been stalling for Iran in the United Nations Security Council, will not support tough sanctions for them to cease uranium enrichment and cutting nuclear and defense deals with Iran is it any surprise that Iran would NOT support its patron?

The fact is the new Shahab-4 and Shahab-6 missiles have the range to threaten Europe. And guess from where the technology for these multi-stage missiles comes?

    Why, Russia and North Korea.

Putin speaks with a FORKED TONGUE and Ali Larijani is a LIAR.

CNN: Dems in tough spot with war funding bill.

Democrats in Congress face a tough decision on a bill funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that does not include a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops.Vote “yes,” and they are certain to face the wrath of anti-war forces in their political base.

Vote “no,” and they may further delay funding for military operations, in turn exposing themselves to the charge that they don’t support the troops.

Considering those unhappy options, Democratic leaders in the House and Senate decided Tuesday to remove timetables from the bill. President Bush has promised to veto the bill if it does include a withdrawal deadline, a move that would mean delaying much-needed funding for military operations.

But conveying the Democratic leadership’s hesitation to the president, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said members would not be forced into voting for the bill.

“I’m not likely to vote for something that doesn’t have a timetable or a goal of coming home,” Pelosi said.

Anti-war groups are furious at the decision of Democratic leaders to remove the timetables. MoveOn.org released a statement saying it would consider recruiting primary challengers to lawmakers who support the bill, as well as advertising against them in their districts or states.

“Voters elected Democrats in November to lead the way out of the mess in Iraq,” said Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, who decried the bill as “just a blank check for an endless war.”

The pressure the funding measure is putting on Democratic senators running for president was clearly evident Wednesday.

The “SURRENDER MONKEYS” in the Congress really want to disarm the troops but are afraid of the repercussions – which would be suicide politically and electorally.

Come on Pelosi and Reid cut off the funds and vote against the bill!

Isn’t this bill the “blank check” that you did not wish to give the President?  Isn’t this capitulation to President Bush?
    Stand up for your beliefs…..

You know will be happy even though Kos and the NUTROOTS aren’t.

Jimmy Carter Watch: Bush Administration is “The Worst in History” Part 2

    cox&forkum07.05.21web

Now, former President Jimmy Carter is showing remorse for calling the Bush Administration “the worst in history.”

“My remarks were maybe careless or misinterpreted but I wasn’t comparing the overall administration and certainly not talking about anyone personally,” Carter said in an interview Monday when asked to explain.

The comments “were interpreted as comparing this whole administration to all other administrations when what I was actually doing was responding to a question about foreign policy between [President Richard] Nixon and this administration, and I think that this administration’s foreign policy compared to Nixon’s was much worse. … I wasn’t comparing this administration with other administrations throughout history but just with President Nixon’s,” he told NBC’s “The Today Show.”

Carter, whose administration was plagued by sky-high inflation and a 444-day American hostage crisis in Iran, was filling in a quote Saturday in which he said, “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.”

Guess Jimmy still wants to be invited to events at the White House.

This peanut farmer is as big a MORON as he was when he was fighting that rabbitt when he was President.

Fox News: Hamas ‘Mickey Mouse’ Wants Islam Takeover

Hamas militants have enlisted the iconic Mickey Mouse to broadcast their message of Islamic dominion and armed resistance to their most impressionable audience — little kids.A giant black-and-white rodent — named “Farfour,” or “butterfly,” but unmistakably a Mickey ripoff — does his high-pitched preaching against the U.S. and Israel on a children’s show run each Friday on Al-Aqsa TV, a station run by Hamas. The militant group, sworn to Israel’s destruction, shares power in the Palestinian government.

“You and I are laying the foundation for a world led by Islamists,” Farfour squeaked on a recent episode of the show, which is titled, “Tomorrow’s Pioneers.”

“We will return the Islamic community to its former greatness, and liberate Jerusalem, God willing, liberate Iraq, God willing, and liberate all the countries of the Muslims invaded by the murderers.”

Children call in to the show, many singing Hamas anthems about fighting Israel.

Israel has long complained that the Palestinian airwaves are filled with incitement.

An Israeli organization that monitors Palestinian media, Palestian Media Watch, said the Mickey Mouse lookalike takes “every opportunity to indoctrinate young viewers with teachings of Islamic supremacy, hatred of Israel and the U.S., and support of ‘resistance,’ the Palestinian euphemism for terror.”

Hamas later announced that it would remove Jihad Mickey, but it didn’t last long. FOX News reported this weekend: Hamas Continues Running Kids TV Show Featuring ‘Mickey Mouse’ Look-Alike Preaching Terror.

Just like the Nazis……indoctrinate them young and achieve your goal at all costs.

AFP: Iran nuclear plant still in early stages: UN atomic chief

Iran is still in the early stages of creating a plant to enrich uranium, the chief of the UN atomic watchdog said on Thursday, adding that fears over its nuclear programme arose over what the uranium would be used for.

“Iran is still at an early stage of building a plant to enrich unranium… There is no fear caused by Iran’s uranium enrichment (in itself), but fears arise from the purpose of this enrichment,” the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Mohamed ElBaradei told reporters.

“Iran is pressing ahead with building the Natanz reactor to have 54,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium. Now it is still at the hundreds stage,” he said in what appeared to be a downplaying of Iran’s progress.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced this week that the Islamic republic’s controversial uranium enrichment work had reached an “industrial scale.”

But Russia, which is building Iran’s first nuclear power plant, as well as other nations have cast doubts on the accuracy of his statement. …

Uranium enrichment is the key sticking point in the standoff between Iran and the West, because as well as producing nuclear fuel the process in highly extended form can also make the fissile core for an atomic bomb.

Iran says its nuclear drive is solely aimed at generating energy and that it does not aspire to nuclear weapons.

    Right.

The “NUCLEAR POINT OF NO RETURN” has been reached.

It will be up to Israel or the United States to either prevent Iran going forward to develop a nuclear bomb or surrender.

FOX News: Iran to Suspend Cooperation With Nuke Watchdog Over Sanctions.

Iran isn’t backing down after a unanimous vote by the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions, announcing Sunday that it will partially suspend cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency and will be adjusting relations with those nations who voted for sanctions.

Iranian officials called the vote by the U.N. Security Council in response to Tehran’s refusal to stop enriching uranium “illegal and bullying.”

“The Security Council has to be aware of its own position and status. Actions that are illegal, unwarranted and unjustified will reduce the credibility of the Security Council,” Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said through a translator while in New York.

“A few select countries don’t have the right to abuse the Security Council,” Mottaki added.

In response to the vote, the Iranian Cabinet also decided to stop informing U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency of any new steps or decisions in its uclear weapons program, Gholam Hossein Elham, a government spokesman said on state television.

Sunday’s decision is a response to “Saturday night’s illegal and bullying resolution by the Security Council,” Elham said. The suspension of cooperation “will continue until Iran’s nuclear case is referred back to the IAEA from the U.N Security Council.”

While Iran stands firm against the world, international pressure continues to mount for Tehran to release 15 British soldiers who Iranian officials say had crossed into Tehran’s territory. Accused of trespassing, Britain says the sailors and marines were conducting a routine inspection of a merchant ship in the disputed Shatt Al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq when they were captured Friday by Iranian forces.

Of course, even the watered down and feckless United Nations sanctions are not enough to persuade Iran and its Mullahs to foresake their quest for nuclear weapons.

And who cares if Iran stops cooperating with the IAEA?

The Iranian secret nuclear weapons development program is not being monitored by anyone.
