Mark Steyn Watch: An Act of Hygiene

WSJ – Opinion Journal: An Act of Hygiene
Democracy fells yet another anti-American government.QUEBEC–Remember the conventional wisdom of 2004? Back then, you’ll recall, it was the many members of George Bush’s “unilateral” coalition who were supposed to be in trouble, not least the three doughty warriors of the Anglosphere–the president, Tony Blair and John Howard–who would all be paying a terrible electoral price for lying their way into war in Iraq. The Democrats’ position was that Mr. Bush’s rinky-dink nickel-and-dime allies didn’t count: The president has “alienated almost everyone,” said Jimmy Carter, “and now we have just a handful of little tiny countries supposedly helping us in Iraq.” (That would be Britain, Australia, Poland, Japan . . .) Instead of those nobodies, John Kerry pledged that, under his leadership, “America will rejoin the community of nations”–by which he meant Jacques Chirac, Gerhard Schroeder, the Belgian guy . . .
Two years on, Messrs. Bush, Blair, Howard and Koizumi are all re-elected, while Mr. Chirac is the lamest of lame ducks, and his ingrate citizenry has tossed out his big legacy, the European Constitution; Mr. Schroeder’s government was defeated and he’s now shilling for Russia’s state-owned Gazprom (“It’s all about Gaz!”); and the latest member of the coalition of the unwilling to hit the skids is Canada’s Liberal Party, which fell from office on Monday. John Kerry may have wanted to “rejoin the community of nations.” Instead, “the community of nations” has joined John Kerry, windsurfing off Nantucket in electric-yellow buttock-hugging Lycra, or whatever he’s doing these days.
Mark Steyn is RIGHT on the mark with this hilarious but true piece on Canada, Stephen Harper and the Liberal Party demise.

Canada Election Watch: Canadians Vote for Change – Conservative Party Wins
Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper his wife Laureen Teskey, along with children Ben and Rachel, celebrate his minority government win in the Canadian federal election in Calgary, Canada, Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.
ASSociated Press: Conservative Party Wins in Canada Election
Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party won national elections Monday and ended 13 years of Liberal rule, a victory expected to move Canada rightward on social and economic issues and lead to improved ties with the United States.
Congrats to fellow conservatives in the Great White North.
“Tonight friends, our great country has voted for change, and Canadians have asked our party to take the lead in delivering that change,” Harper told some 2,000 cheering supporters at his campaign headquarters in Calga
How Canadian policy will change under the conservatives:
Harper has said he would reconsider a U.S. missile defense scheme rejected by the current Liberal government of Prime Minister Paul Martin. He also said he wanted to move beyond the Kyoto debate by establishing different environmental controls, spend more on the Canadian military, expand its peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Haiti and tighten security along the border with the United States in an effort to prevent terrorists and guns from crossing the frontier.
Here is to better Canadian-American relations.

Canada Election Watch: Michael Moore Bemoans Apparent Conservative Party Success at the Polls
AFP: US filmmaker Michael Moore weighs in on Canada’s election
Controversial American documentary filmmaker Michael Moore bemoaned an apparent right turn by liberal northern neighbor Canada in its upcoming general election.
The quotes:
“Oh, Canada — you’re not really going to elect a Conservative majority on Monday, are you? That’s a joke, right? I know you have a great sense of humor, … but this is no longer funny.”
“First, you have the courage to stand against the war in Iraq — and then you elect a prime minister who’s for it. You declare gay people have equal rights — and then you elect a man who says they don’t.”
“A man running the nation to the south of you is hoping you can lend him a hand by picking Stephen Harper, because he’s a man who shares his world view. Do you want to help George Bush by turning Canada into his latest conquest?”
“Far be it from me, as an American, to suggest what you should do,” he added. “I hope you don’t feel this appeal of mine is too intrusive, but I just couldn’t sit by, as your friend, and say nothing.”
The Canadian people are tired of the corruption and bankrupt left-wing policies that accompany the Liberal Party and Prime Minister Paul Martin.
A Conservative Party victory today will not be a victory for President George Bush but a victory for the Canadian people.

Canada Election Watch: Stephen Harper and Conservative Party Poised to Take Control of Canada
Canadian Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper addresses supporters during an early morning election rally in Windsor, Ontario January 22, 2006. Canadians go to the polls in a federal election on January 23.
Reuters: Canadian Liberals face loss after 12 years in power
Canadian political leaders on Sunday made one last cross-country dash on the eve of an election expected to oust the ruling Liberals, move Canada to the right and improve ties with the United States.
With polls showing a steady lead of 7 to 12 percentage points, the Conservatives sounded increasingly confident, though it looked like they would fall short of a majority in Parliament and have to depend on other parties.
“After 13 years and four failed mandates, the era of Liberal arrogance is ending,” local candidate Michael Smith told a Winnipeg rally as he introduced Conservative leader Stephen Harper, who made stops in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia on Sunday.
It is the second election in just 18 months and the third since late 2000. The Liberals — who took power in late 1993 — campaigned on their fiscal record, reminding people the economy was booming and trying to portray Harper as an extremist who wanted to scrap gay marriage and abortion.
But Prime Minister Paul Martin, who spent Sunday in British Columbia before flying to his home province of Quebec, seems likely to fall victim to voter fatigue with the Liberals and a major kickback scandal that hit his government shortly after he took power in December 2003.
“Only a new government can turn the page on the past 13 years of scandal and inaction and get on with addressing the real concerns of ordinary working people,” Harper said. “We have an opportunity with a new government, and only a new government, to bring together East and West, English and French, city and country, new and old Canadians.”
Some polls suggest the Liberals will get their lowest percentage of votes in any election since independence in 1867, even lower than the 28 percent they collected in 1984.
If Harper wins, it will be his reward for uniting Canada’s two fractious right-wing parties at the end of 2003 and creating the Conservative Party.
Harper would be the first prime minister to have spent most of his life in the conservative Western province of Alberta. He promises to lower taxes, clamp down on crime, clean up government, cut health waiting times and return some power from the federal government to Canada’s 10 provinces.
It is all over but the voting.
Here is to the Conservative Party, Stephen Harper and better Canada – USA relations.
Stay tuned……..

Canada Election Watch: Polls Show Harper and Conservatives Near a Majority
Canadian Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper (L) greets supporters while attending an election rally in Toronto, Ontario January 12, 2006. Two new polls gave the Conservative Party a strong lead in the run-up to the January 23 federal election, and a projection based on several surveys said they could be within three seats of a majority.
The Globe and Mail: Seat projection puts Harper on cusp of majority
The Conservative Party will come within a few seats of winning a majority government, if current levels of voter support hold up, according to projections by the Strategic Counsel.
The Liberal Party would form the Official Opposition but would have only about a dozen more MPs than the third-place Bloc Québécois, the projections suggest.
The Adscam Scandal and the other foolishness of Paul Martin has come home to roost in Canada.
The projections, which are calculated by running this week’s Strategic Counsel poll of more than 3,500 Canadians through a mathematical formula, are that the Tories will win 152 seats on Jan. 23, followed by 74 for the Liberals, 60 for the Bloc and 21 for the NDP. There are 308 seats in the House, so a party needs 155 to form a majority.
Canadian Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper holds up his party’s spending plan during an unveiling in Oakville, Ontario January 13, 2006.
The Regional Breakdown of the polling:
– British Columbia is on track to elect 26 Tories, six Liberals, three NDP MPs and an Independent.
– All 28 ridings in Alberta will go to the Conservatives.
– Manitoba and Saskatchewan will not change, once again electing a combined 20 Conservatives, four Liberals and four NDP MPs.
– The Greater Toronto Area will elect 35 Liberals, eight Tories and two NDP MPs while the rest of Ontario will elect 49 Tories, four Liberals and eight New Democrats.
– Montreal will have 21 Bloc MPs and seven Liberals, while the rest of Quebec will elect 39 Bloc MPs and eight Conservatives.
– Atlantic Canada will elect 15 Liberals, 13 Conservatives and four NDP MPs.
– All three seats in the territories will go to the Liberals.
See Good Bye to the Corrupt Liberal Party and Political Hack Paul Martin……..
Stay tuned….. election is January 23rd…….

Canada Election Watch: Tories Surge in Polls
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper holds an impromptu news conference on his campaign plane in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday.
Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have opened up an eight-percentage-point advantage over the Liberals, the biggest gap of the campaign going into tonight’s crucial debate, a new poll shows.
The survey, conducted for The Globe and Mail and CTV News by the Strategic Counsel, also shows that voters believe the Conservatives hold values that are closest to theirs, a turnaround from the first week of the campaign when Canadians identified more closely with Liberal values.
Will the Liberal Party and Prime Minister Paul Martin be able to buy/scam their way out of this electoral shortfall.
Doubtful.
Too much corruption.
Stay tuned for tonight’s debate………
Captain Ed opines, Tories Ride The Wave To Top
And Martin has one last worry: if Harper gets his majority, the investigations into Adscam, Option Canada, and the income-trust insider trading will truly begin in earnest, as well as any other malfeasances. As one commenter from the Canadian capital put it, shredders in Ottawa have begun working overtime now.

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin Watch: Canada Blames U.S. for Gun Violence
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin (R) is applauded by Toronto Mayor David Miller during a campaign stop to unveil the Liberal handgun policy in Toronto December 8, 2005. Canadians will head to the polls January 23, 2006.
The ASSociated Press has Canada blames U.S. for gun violence
Toronto shooting is latest death in a record yearCanadian officials, seeking to make sense of another fatal shooting in what has been a record year for gun-related deaths, said Tuesday that along with a host of social ills, part of the problem stemmed from what they said was the United States exporting its violence.
The news story from the 26th, 1 Dead, 4 Hurt in Toronto Street Shooting
One person was shot to death and four others wounded Monday in a shooting on a Toronto street crowded with holiday shoppers, police said.
hey said two suspects were arrested and at least one firearm was seized shortly after the 5:30 p.m. violence near the popular Eaton Centre shopping mall.
Details were sketchy. Police did not immediately say if the two were suspected of opening fire or if the victims had been purposely targeted.
Officials said the four wounded were hospitalized, but provided no details of the injuries.
Emergency vehicles crowded around the scene, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape.
“Someone said they were shot and everyone went to the back of the store,” said Magnolia Sandoval, an employee at a camera store.
A rash of recent guns deaths in Toronto prompted Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to announce earlier this month that his government would ban handguns if he were re-elected in the Jan. 23 elections.
This is a tragic event but to place the blame on the United States?
Paul Martin and his LEFTIE/NDP crony David Miller are great at expedient demagoguery.
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and Toronto Mayor David Miller warned that Canada could become like the United States after gunfire erupted Monday on a busy street filled with holiday shoppers, killing a 15-year-old girl and wounding six bystanders — the latest victims in a record surge in gun violence in Toronto.
The shooting stemmed from a dispute among a group of 10 to 15 youth, and the victim was a teenager out with a parent near a popular shopping mall, police said Tuesday.
It is now being reported that this tragic shooting is the result of Canadian gangs, Gang feud may have led to Toronto shooting: reports
A feud between rival gang members may have led to the Boxing Day shooting spree that killed a 15-year-old girl and injured six others in a downtown Toronto area bustling with shoppers, according to published reports.
Police believe the gunfire broke out Monday between two groups, with 10 to 15 people in their late teens to early 20s involved in an exchange of gunfire on busy Yonge Street near the Eaton Centre, said the reports Wednesday.
The United States bashing quotes:
“It’s a sign that the lack of gun laws in the U.S. is allowing guns to flood across the border that are literally being used to kill people in the streets of Toronto,” Miller said.
“The U.S. is exporting its problem of violence to the streets of Toronto,” he (Miller) said.“What we saw yesterday is a stark reminder of the challenge that governments, police forces and communities face to ensure that Canadian cities do not descend into the kind of rampant gun violence we have seen elsewhere,” Martin said.
Flap recommends that Mayor Miller focus on his own Toronto urban problems and stop the blame game.
Paul Martin, a CORRUPT failure as Prime Minister will never stop until he is cast out of office in the January elections.
But, if Canadians wish the Congress can always vote for visa requirements for all Canadian visitors and strict import/export controls for Canadian business.
