Barack Obama Watch: Disavowing Grandma

Stanley Dunham, “Barry” Obama and grandmother Madelyn Dunham

Let’s see Senator Barack Obama said the following a few weeks ago in his “memorable” A More Perfect Union Speech about Pastor Jeremiah Wright:

And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

Now, that Obama has thrown Pastor Wright “under the bus” and disavowed him, what about the black community and his grandmother who he did throw “under the bus” weeks ago?

GOP Using Obama to Win Congressional Seats

Fox News profiled the upcoming special election in MS-01 in which Democrat Travis Childers tries to deny being endorsed by ultra-liberal Barack Obama after receiving his endorsement and receiving support from Obama supporters. The segment shows just how volatile Barack Obama will be in numerous districts nationwide.

Of course, the GOP is going to use the Jeremiah Wright – Barack Obama flap for partisan advantage and why not?

Turns out Louisiana and Mississippi weren’t quite finished with the Democratic presidential campaign.

Sen. Barack Obama won each state’s primary earlier this year. But these days his face still appears in television ads in both states, this time from Republicans trying to turn him into a liability for Democrats in two looming special elections for long-held Republican seats.

Democratic victories would be a serious setback for Republicans. But it also would go a long way to reassure nervous Democrats, particularly undecided superdelegates, that Obama would not present a hardship to House or Senate candidates running in tough races.

It will be difficult to extrapolate Congressional victories on whether Obama or Hillary would fare better against McCain in the Fall because of the local nature of Congressional race politics. But, whoever wins will claim the mantle with Superdelegates – provided Hilary can win Indiana on Tuesday, May 6th.

But, the GOP running ads against down-ticket office holders this early is unique. But, they are special elections……and the Louisiana seat has been in GOP hands for 32 years.

Here is an ad from Louisiana – the election is tomorrow:

Barack Obama Watch: Chickens Coming Home To Roost Indeed

jeremiah wright Home coming

From the Ryskind Sketchbook

The weekend polls which Flap thought would show movement in poll numbers for Hillary Clinton or against Barack Obama because of the Jeremiah Wright Flap have turned up early.

Look at the latest Gallup poll:

First, Obama vs. Hillary

050108DailyUpdateGraph1_brod82

Then, Obama vs. McCain

050108DailyUpdateGraph2_bcor6s

Flap thinks Obama is in deep trouble. He will likely lose Indiana next Tuesday and should Hillary pull an upset in African American vote rich North Carolina it could begin the death watch.

The national Rasmussen poll also shows a decline for Obama.

The two latest Indiana Democrat primary polls show Hillary Clinton in command. They are here and here.

Glenn McCoy on the Reverend Jeremiah Wright

The latest Fox News poll has some interesting data of the Barack Obama – Jeremiah Wright flap.

obamawrightfoxnewspoll1

obamawrightfoxnewspoll2

The poll was conducted by telephone on April 28 and 29.

With polling numbers like these, Flap expects to see some movement in the weekend Indiana Democratic primary polls and perhaps some movement in North Carolina.

It is Flap’s opinion that should Obama fail to win both primary elections, the Democrat nomination race will continue all of the way to Denver in August.

Barack Obama Watch: The Story of Betrayal

obamaandwright

Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama

Has the bleeding stopped from Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s National Press Club appearance and Barack Obama’s Sister Soulja moment yesterday?

Yes – for a while.

Now, the psycho – political analysis begins for both men.

Chicago friends of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Sen. Barack Obama say both men are simply sad following a controversy and eventual falling out that came to a head Tuesday.

Just how did the battle of wills play out behind the scenes?

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports Obama felt betrayed and Wright felt sand-bagged. Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church said he has been speaking to both men as the events of the past 24 hours unfolded.

He counseled Obama Tuesday morning, and while CBS 2 talked to him Tuesday evening, Rev. Wright called his cell phone.

“I don’t think he had any intention to hurt Barack. He loves Barack,” Pfleger said. “I think the pain and the moment took over.”

That moment was in a place Pfleger called “a lion’s den” – The National Press Club.

“The people who were close to him pleaded with him not to do it,” said WVON radio host Roland Martin. “We knew what the questions were gonna be, but it really was the antics, the looks the dismissive tone, the strut. It was being flippant, some say being pompous and arrogant.”

This story will die down now as the May 6th primary elections loom in North Carolina and Indiana. The weekend polling will show what ACTUAL damage has been done to the Obama brand.

In the meantime, Democrat Superdelegates appear to be ready to break for Obama.

Stay tuned……

Hillary Clinton Watch: Poll Numbers Coming Home to Roost

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., listens to owner Ben Miller during a factory tour at Miller Veneers in Indianapolis, Ind., Tuesday, April 29, 2008.

Survey USA had Hillary Clinton up by nine points over Barack Obama in Indiana the other day and now has Hillary to within five points in North Carolina.

In a Democratic Primary in North Carolina today, 04/29/08, one week till votes are counted, the 10-point lead that Barack Obama has had for two months is halved, to now 5 points, Obama 49%, Clinton 44%, according to SurveyUSA’s 7th tracking poll, conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV Raleigh. In SurveyUSA last four polls, over the past two months, Obama has led by 10, 8, 10, and 9 points. Today: 5. White voters are key. Since January, Clinton had led among Carolina whites by 14, 19, 17, 22 and 23 points. But today, suddenly: 31. In the Research Triangle, Clinton is up 9 points, week-on-week; Obama is down 3; a net swing of 12 points to Clinton. Among unaffiliated voters, Clinton has overtaken Obama for the first time in 2008, though the difference is small and within the sub-group’s margin of sampling error. The two tie among Moderates. Obama leads slightly among Liberals. Clinton leads slightly among Conservatives. There is enough cross-current in the political waters that SurveyUSA’s final pre-Primary poll, next week, may show more movement — though in which direction it is impossible to know.

Are these numbers a result of the Obama – Jeremiah Wright explosion or Bitter-Gate? Are they significant or accurate?
Well. something is moving the numbers. Sounds to Flap that Obama’s negatives are coming home to roost.

• What Wright said Monday “directly contradicts everything I’ve done in my life.”
• Obama: There has been great damage to our relationship
• Obama: Sound bites created a charicature of Wright; yesterday Wright characterized himself

Barack Obama Watch: The Wright Stuff for the GOP

ramireztoon042908

Michael Ramirez on Reverend Jeremiah Wright

Is the latest Barack Obama – Jeremiah Wright flap, the RIGHT stuff for the GOP in November?

Flap and others think so.

While there’s still more GOPers who think Clinton and not Obama is the easier downballot target, NRCC’s Cole has been the consistent dissenter on this issue and is betting that Obama and not Clinton will be the bigger drag. Politico: “Republican-leaning districts could be particularly fertile ground for Obama-focused attacks, GOP officials say. ‘I think he’s the weaker candidate, and I’ve thought that for over a year now,’ NRCC Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.) said at a briefing on Monday. ‘He’s very inexperienced. He is by any definition liberal and to the left of Hillary Clinton, and he will give us plenty of ideological divisions to work with.’”

“Besides the two special congressional elections in Mississippi and Louisiana next month, Republicans believe they can also exploit Obama’s vulnerabilities in House battlegrounds where he has struggled to win over key demographic groups. Those areas include three culturally conservative seats in Pennsylvania, where Obama lost badly in last week’s primary, and three Cuban-American districts in Florida that Democrats are seriously contesting for the first time.”

More on how Jeremiah Wright is being used by the GOP in down ballot races here.

As Flap said yesterday, each minute (news cycle) that Obama does not emphatically repudiate Jeremiah Wright HIS campaign and the Democrat Party is hurt. This entire flap may have created a HUGE opening for the GOP.

Even the LEFT recognizes the conundrum and urges Obama to throw Wright under the bus – and quick.

But, is it too late for a Sister Soulja moment and for Obama to DISOWN Reverend Wright?

If conservatives at first thought the Obama/Wright catastrophe was ironic, given Obama’s liberal sermons, or in a political sense timely in helping the McCain candidacy, I think by now they and most other Americans instead see the mess as tragic for the country, and a radical setback in our collective racial relations. Everyone of good conscience should deplore Wright in the strongest terms, and implore Obama once and for all to disown this extremist.

So, will Obama weigh in today on Jeremiah Wright? Or will Reverend Wright be the fatal blow to his candidacy?

In any case, for the GOP and John McCain, it is the WRIGHT STUFF.

Enlightened idea of the day: Wright’s Voice Could Spell Doom for Obama

Should it become necessary in the months from now to identify the moment that doomed Obama’s presidential aspirations, attention is likely to focus on the hour between nine and ten this morning at the National Press Club. It was then that Wright, Obama’s longtime pastor, reignited a controversy about race from which Obama had only recently recovered – and added lighter fuel.

Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks (“God damn America”) and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.

Every minute that Barack Obama does NOT “THROW JEREMIAH WRIGHT UNDER THE BUS” harms his Presidential campaign and the Democrat Party’s chances of regaining the White House.

The stage has been set for a “Sister Soulja Moment” and Obama must cease upon it. Flap says if he continues to do nothing past tomorrow – put a fork in him – HE”S DONE.”

Barack Obama Watch: Jeremiah Wright at the National Press Club

Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, speaks at a breakfast at the National Press Club in Washington April 28, 2008.

No wonder Jeremiah Wright is receiving protection from the Nation of Islam for the death threats he purportedly has received.

• This Wasn’t an Attack on Me, It Was an Attack on the Black Church
• Hits those who “worship Sunday mornings in a black clergy robe, then burn crosses on Sunday evening with a white Klan robe.”
• “The Christianity of the slave-holder is not the Christianity of the slave.”
• On Farrkhan: “How many people do you know who could get one million people on the mall? Farrakhan is like E.F. Hutton. When he talks, black America listens. Whether they agree with him or not, they listen.”
• On Obama’s reaction: “We both know that if Obama had not said what he said, he would never get elected.”
• “We have never apologized for slavery. We have never apologized for Japan.”
• On the Government created AIDS: Have you read “Medical Apartheid”? I read different things.. Cites the Tuskeegee Experiments. “I believe our government is capable of doing anything.”

Juan Williams on Fox News said that Reverend Wright confirmed the worst.

From Team Obama: Obama strategist Axelrod speaks to MSNBC prior to speech, says campaign has no control over Wright and his media blitz. Admits this isn’t helpful to Obama. Video here.

Barack Obama now has no choice but to strongly REPUDIATE Jeremiah Wright. If not, he is DONE.
