AP: Some Dems want Lieberman out of party

Critics of Sen. Joe Lieberman’s independent run to keep his job attacked on two fronts Monday, with one group asking an elections official to throw him out of the Democratic Party and a former rival calling on state officials to keep his name off the November ballot.

Staffers for Lieberman, who lost the Aug. 8 Democratic primary to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, called both efforts dirty politics. The senator filed as an independent candidate a day after the loss, running under the new Connecticut for Lieberman party.

A group whose members described themselves as peace activists asked Sharon Ferrucci, New Haven’s Democratic registrar of voters, to remove Lieberman from the party, arguing that he cannot be a Democrat while running under another party’s banner.

The request could lead to a hearing in which Lieberman, the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee in 2000, would have to argue that he still adheres to the party’s principles.

“The law is pretty clear he is no longer a member of the Democratic Party in good standing,” said group leader Henry Lowendorf. “There was an open vote and he was voted out. He joined a different party.”

Ferrucci said she would research the request, the first of its kind in her two decades on the job.

What? Throw the Democrat’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2000 out of the party? While he is a sitting Democrat United States Senator?

These Ned Lamont LEFTY NUTTERS in Connecticut are looking like a Jon Lovitz routine.

But, wait there is more…..

John Orman, a Democrat who gave up a challenge to Lieberman last year, argued in complaints filed with the state Monday that Lieberman should be kept off the Nov. 7 ballot.

Orman, a Fairfield University political science professor, accused Lieberman of creating “a fake political party,” adding: “He’s doing anything he can to get his name on the ballot.”

Excuse me, Flap thought voting for candidates for political office was a democratic exercise and if you have complied with Connecticut’s voting laws then…….

What about Ned Lamont? What does he say about these attempts to sabotage the Lieberman campaign?

Lamont distanced himself Monday from the peace activists’ request. He told reporters that Lieberman should not be removed from the Democratic rolls, and that Lieberman has the right under state law to form the new party.

“He’s got the right to run. It’s not what I would have done,” Lamont said.

Right and didn’t Lamont distance himself from Jane Hamsher and this?

“I don’t know anything about the blogs. I’m not responsible for those. I have no comment on them.”

These dirty tricks continue to emanate from the lefty fringe that is driving Ned Lamont’s candidacy.

Lieberman campaign manager Sherry Brown said the effort was “dirty political tricks at its worst.”

“This kind of ridiculous, partisan game-playing is not going to provide anyone in Connecticut with better jobs, better health care, or better schools,” she said.

Certainly, this will turn off the moderate Democrat voters of Connecticut and explains why Lieberman continues to lead in the latest polls. Has the Democrat party of FDR, Truman, and JFK devolved into disqualifying folks?

A Jon Lovitz routine may be too kind of words.

ABC: Kerry Calls Lieberman the New Cheney

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., blasted a fellow Democrat, Sen. Joe Lieberman, for continuing his bid in the Connecticut Senate race despite a narrow loss to newcomer Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary earlier this month.

“I’m concerned that [Lieberman] is making a Republican case,” Kerry told ABC News’ “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” in an exclusive appearance.

Kerry accused the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate of “adopting the rhetoric of Dick Cheney,” on the issue of Iraq.

Senator John Kerry is so full of class.

Flap would hate to be in the Democrat Senate cloakroom after Lieberman is re-elected. Of course, maybe Lieberman wouldn’t go inside.

In case Kerry doesn’t recognize it, and there’s no particular reason why he would considering his own legislative track record, that’s the mainstream in Connecticut. And unless the state has suddenly turned into Texas, Connecticut voters see little resemblance between Lieberman and Cheney. Maybe Kerry needs to reconsider his own relationship to the mainstream instead.

Sen. Joe Lieberman on Sunday called on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign and backed an international conference to find a way out of the crisis in Iraq.

Lieberman, who is seeking a fourth term as an independent candidate after losing the Democratic nomination to newcomer Ned Lamont on Aug. 8, also criticized some fellow Democrats. He said several Democrats are trying to impose a “litmus test” on the party.

“I think it’s still time for new leadership at the Pentagon,” he said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Lieberman, an early supporter of the Iraq war, said he called for Rumsfeld to step down in 2003.

“With all respect to Don Rumsfeld, who has done a grueling job for six years, we would benefit from new leadership to work with our military in Iraq,” he said Sunday.

JoeMentum has got the BIG MO. Lamont’s position on the Iraq War is so radical/irrational that Lieberman’s measured/calculated policy recommendations will look palatable to most Connecticut voters.

Flap does not necessarily agree because this is the President’s call. But, if Flap were Commander in Chief, he would consider ALL policy options, including a Rumsfeld retirement.

An international conference on the Iraq War?

No Way

Look how well the United Nations is doing with Israel and Hezbollah.

He also accused Lamont of distorting his stance on Iraq.

“He made me into a cheerleader for George Bush and everything that’s happened,” Lieberman said. “And the record shows that, while I believe we did the right thing in overthrowing Saddam Hussein, I’ve been very critical over the years, particularly in 2003 and 2004, about the failure to send enough American troops to secure the country, about the absence of adequate plans and preparation to deal with post-Saddam Iraq.”

Liberman knows that there is nothing like a good OFFENSE in politics and Ned Lamont is now playing defense.

The Lamont campaign issued a statement Sunday criticizing Lieberman for trying to “paint himself as courageous for clinging to the failed ‘stay the course’ policy in Iraq and not listening to the voters of Connecticut on the need to change course.”

“His new found ‘criticism’ of the war won’t convince Connecticut voters after so many years of stubbornly rubber-stamping Bush’s failed policies,” the statement said.

Lamont issued a “WEAK” response but besides “cut and run” he has NO plan to change American policy in Iraq.

AP: New poll shows Lieberman leading Lamont

Ned Lamont, whose anti-war campaign rattled the political landscape by toppling Sen. Joe Lieberman in Connecticut’s Democratic primary, is gaining support among voters — but Lieberman still has an edge, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Quinnipiac University poll has Lieberman leading Lamont among registered voters 49 percent to 38 percent. Republican Alan Schlesinger gets support from 4 percent. Among likely voters, Lieberman was supported by 53 percent, compared to Lamont’s 41 percent and Schlesinger’s 4 percent.

Lieberman’s advantage in the general election comes from broad support among unaffiliated and Republican voters. Fifty-three percent of likely voters polled said he deserves to be re-elected, and nearly half doubted that Lamont, a political novice who founded a company that wires college campuses for cable television, has enough experience to be senator.

Senator JoeMentum Lieberman is showing some true electoral and polling MOMENTUM. This is bad news for Ned Lamont.

Lieberman’s long time colleagues in the United States Senate and Connecticut politics are not apt to throw Joe overboard if he is showing early polling stength. Moreover, the Washington based PACS will keep the campaign money flowing.

The GOP nominee, Alan Schlesinger, is a laugher/moron with gambling debts and problems (card counting bans from Indian casinos) and will poll less than zero on election day. The GOP will save its resources for Lieberman – if he needs any help.

The national Democrat Party will be neutralized because of the fear that Lieberman could switch to the GOP after the election or decide later as an independent elected senator to vote for organizational purposes with the Republicans.

Now, everyone knows why Lamont and the Nutroot Left were calling for Lieberman to stand down immediately after the Democrat primary.

Their polling shows Lamont as a LOSER.

“Senator Lieberman’s support among Republicans is nothing short of amazing. It more than offsets what he has lost among Democrats,” poll director Douglas Schwartz said. “As long as Lieberman maintains this kind of support among Republicans, while holding a significant number of Democratic votes, the veteran senator will be hard to beat.”

Firedoglake thinks it is political malpractice what some Democrats are doing to Lamont.

This is political malpractice of the highest order.  I repeat: why is supporting Joe Lieberman more important than winning back the House?  Let’s also not forget the effect of Joe’s GOP GOTV on the governer’s race, where DeStephano needs help against Republican governor Jodi Rell.

The elected official wing of the Party must take away any claim Joe has to being a Democrat, and do so dramatically.  Lamont’s numbers among Dems in the Quinnipiac poll must and will rise, even as he broadens his support among independents, as in his approach through his WSJ op-ed yesterday (online subscription required).  But this effort also requires active Party involvement:  there’s no room for wiggling any longer.

It is the centrists (independent voters) and the GOP that will decide this race.  There are not enough anti-JoMentum folks in Connecticut to beat him.

Rasmussen (Via Captain’s Quarters): Lamont Support Dropping

If the netroots plan on riding Ned Lamont all the way to the Senate floor, the independent campaign of Joe Lieberman has an unpleasant surprise waiting for them. According to a new Rasmussen poll, Lieberman has a lead over Lamont in a three-way race. Lieberman also has better favorability ratings than Lamont by a significant margin. Their previous survey, taken shortly before the election, showed the two men tied in a three-way race. Rasmussen will have the specific numbers out shortly (at this link), but the trends have reversed themselves in the last days of the primaries — and Connecticut voters have changed their minds about Lamont.

Flap suspects that Lieberman had the best polling stats that money could buy and structured his independent race against Ned Lamont weeks ago. The recent revelations of Lamont hypocrisy both on the “Black Face” Flap and the Wal-Mart hypocrisy were bonuses to Lieberman.

But, the netroots of Huffington and Kos are restless. They want demand Lieberman withdraw because they know that Lamont is an empty suit rich boy who will now actually have to be something other than an anti-Bush rhetorical prop.

If Lamont wishes to win this race, he will have to campaign for it AND develop some ISSUES. The Iraq War and President Bush (who will never have to stand election again) are just two issues – and two issues do NOT make a successful Senate candidate.

The early polls reflect this.

The first post-primary Nutmeg State Rasmussen poll shows Lieberman leading Lamont, 46-41, with the Republican getting 6. (The poll is for subscribers only – if you’re a political junkie, there are many worse ways that you could feed your habit than shelling out $95 to join the Rasmussen Premium Club.) The pre-primary Rasmussen poll of the general electorate showed Lamont and Lieberman in a flat-footed tie at 40.

Reuters: Rove called Lieberman on voting day

Karl Rove, a top political adviser to President Bush said on Thursday he had called Sen. Joseph Lieberman to wish him well in the Democratic primary in Connecticut this week.

Top Republicans, including Vice President Dick Cheney, have taken the unusual step of publicly commenting on the results of the Democratic primary that Lieberman lost on Tuesday to an anti-war challenger.

“I called him. He’s a personal friend,” Rove told reporters traveling with Bush to Wisconsin. The call was made late Tuesday afternoon, the day of the primary won by challenger Ned Lamont, who painted Lieberman as too cozy with Bush.

Rove said he called Lieberman “and wished him well on his election that night,” and that reports he had offered to help the senator were “completely inaccurate.”

Now, how badly does the White House want Ned Lamont to win?

The Kossaks, etc. must be going wild and Allah says he will have a round-up of reactions later.

AP: Lieberman kicks off go-it-alone campaign

Stripped of support from the Democratic Party and working with a new campaign staff, Sen.
Joe Lieberman kicked off his independent bid for re-election Thursday with a visit planned to this gritty city that last year re-elected a mayor who lost his party’s primary.

Lieberman’s late-morning visit to a Waterbury pizza joint — his first public appearance since losing Tuesday’s primary and his first since dismissing his campaign staff — was to thank Waterbury for its fervent support during the primary. Lieberman won 60 percent of the vote here in his narrow loss to anti-war candidate Ned Lamont.

But it’s also notable because Waterbury last year re-elected a mayor, Michael Jarjura, who lost his Democratic primary but won the general election in a write-in campaign.

In the meantime, the Leftie NUTTERS who defeated Lieberman are whining. Arianna and MarKOS want to pressure Lieberman into withdrawing from the race, so he will not beat up on their lackey, Ned Lamont.

Markos Moulitsas “Screw Them” Zuniga and David Sirota even suggest stripping Lieberman of his Senate Committee assignments.

But, will Lieberman bow to calls of his betrayal of the Democrat Party?

Doubtful…..

Ned Lamont may actually have to develop a platform – something other than Bush LIED and BDS…..

Anyone hear that John McCain was going to Connecticut to campaign for Lieberman?

AP: Calif. candidate pulls Mel Gibson letter

The Republican candidate for lieutenant governor said he no longer will use a fundraising letter sent on his behalf by Mel Gibson, who admitted to an anti-Semitic tirade after he was pulled over for speeding.

Tom McClintock decided to pull the letter after the incident, his campaign spokesman said Tuesday.

“Tom saw the news and the situation as it was unfolding with Mel Gibson and made a conscious decision to direct people not to use the letter any further. He was disillusioned by the situation with Mr. Gibson,” spokesman Stan Devereaux said.

Devereaux said the campaign sent Gibson’s letter to would-be donors four times, twice this year and twice last year.

A BIG OOPS and poor campaign staff research is to blame here. But, the candidate always shares the blame. Next time it might be wise for McClintock to check out and research his Hollywood pals a little closer.

If there is any consolation and there IS, at least Mel Gibson isn’t a convicted child molester like Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame who wrote a fundraising letter for McClintock’s opponent, California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi.

Flap doesn’t think this story with Mel Gibson will have much staying power with this re-revelation of Yarrow’s molestation history (even though he was pardoned by President Jimmy Carter).

But…..a couple questions for John Garamendi:

Why did you accept fundraising help from a convicted child molester?

Do you support Jessica’s Law? You know – Proposition 83 on November’s ballot – Jessica’s Law, the Sexual Predator Punishment and Control Act of 2006.

What say you John Garamendi?
