Apparently so.Less than three months on the job, and already Gavin Newsom is prepping to run for governor again.
A city insider who asked not to be named tells us the new lieutenant governor approached him at a charity fundraiser the other day with a request for help to start raising money for a renewed gubernatorial bid.
Newsom’s inability to compete with the much-better-financed Jerry Brown was one of the reasons he withdrew from last year’s Democratic race and ran instead for lieutenant governor.
Newsom has opened a re-election campaign committee for 2014 – but there’s nothing to stop him from transferring any money he might raise to an exploratory gubernatorial run.
No one from Camp Newsom wanted to comment for the record, but we’re told the lieutenant governor will support Brown for as long as he intends to be governor.
No shocker here.
I mean, California Governor Jerry Brown is OLD and on overage time, so to speak, and a POL has to be ready – and ready quick. You never know when a special election will pop up and Jerry Brown will be one term anyway.

Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner must be dancing this morning.Former President Bill Clinton is backing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for California governor over state Attorney Gen. Jerry Brown, potentially upending next year’s Democratic race to succeed Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Clinton’s decision to appear on Oct. 5 alongside one of his wife’s top backers in her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination comes at a critical time for the San Franciso mayor: Although Newsom has built a substantial Facebook and Twitter following among younger voters, Brown, a former two-term governor, has raised more than twice as much money as he has.
Clinton’s trip to California next month is expected to include an event in predominantly Latino East Los Angeles as well as a high-dollar fundraiser.
While the endorsement of a former president is big news in any state, the former chairman of the California Democratic Party thinks it could be especially significant in California, a state where Clinton has had a strong following ever since he beat Brown in the state’s 1992 presidential primary.
These are delusions of grandeur on the part of Newsom and the California Far Left. Jerry Brown has the support of mainstream labor and will pillage Newsom with television ads next Spring before the June 2010 Democrat Primary election.
California voters are disgruntled in any event(tired of decades of Democrat control of the Legislature) and the REAL race for California Governor is between the two Republicans, Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner. Californians will not vote for an old man retread pol or a young morally challenged San Francisco Mayor.
Flap looks forward to the divisive Democrat primary though.

Why Senator Dianne Feinstein Won’t Run for California Governor in 2010

She is 75 years old – for the most important of a few reasons.Looking at California Attorney General and former Governor Jerry Brown at a news conference announcing prosecution of the Anna Nicole Smith miscreants this past week, how can you spell old?
And, Brown is not quite 71.
The Democrat nomination race will be between two much younger candidates: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Brown will run and split the vote, though.

A choice in the Democrat primary election between 70 year old former California Governor Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown and Di Fi? Such a choice.
California is doomed – especially since in the last hour the California Legislature controlled by the Democrats rammed through an out of balance state budget that increases taxes to boot.

Brown all but announced his candidacy for the race earlier this week and has raised over $3 million.
But, Jerry Brown is worried about a Feinstein candidacy.
In any event, Brown will just have to wait for Feinstein to finally decide.
Feinstein: Well, as you know and I’ve said this, I take my new duty as chairman of the (Intelligence) Committee seriously. I want to see how it goes. You know, I’m one of those people that never says never. That’s just about the situation. It would be hard for me to do, no question, because I’ve got a 16-year commitment here.
On the other hand, I am really concerned about the state. You know, we’re now furloughing employees. We stopped all capital improvement projects. The state has a $42 billion deficit. There’s a structural deficit now built in. And I think whoever runs for the post of governor had better do so with a plan so that, if elected, that plan becomes their mandate to carry out.
Matthews: “When will you decide, you think?”
Feinstein: “Oh, later this year – most likely.”
Senator Feinstein freezes out other candidates like San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with these comments. It will be difficult for them to fundraise for a Governor race will Feinstein lingers about.
Jerry Brown is a definite go and a Feinstein-Brown Democrat Primary race in June 2010 will be a battle of the Titans – one which Feinstein has the advantage. See the latest poll:

Jerry “MOONBEAM” Brown to Run for California Governor Again, 35 Years later – GOP Should Be Happy

Today there is a feature puff piece in the Los Angeles Times saying the “reformed reformer” Jerry Brown, currently California’s Attorney General is running again for California governor – 35 years after winning the seat.Well, this has been no secret in California political circles for many months and Brown known for years as “Governor Moonbeam” has raised a ton of money for the race.
Why should the GOP be happy with the prospect of having one of its candidates, either Steve Poizner, California Insurance Commissioner or Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay run against Brown?
Look at this recent poll:
Note the favorable/unfavorable ratio for Jerry Brown. And, Brown is 70 years old and will face off against a younger generation of pols.
The likelihood of Brown winning the Democrat Primary election in June 2010 will be high. He will face off against a Democrat cast of many( some will undoubtedly drop out) – all much younger candidates but each with their on set of unfavorables: Gavin Newsom, the Mayor of San Francisco – Gay Marriage and extra-marital sex scandal; LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa – exra-marital sex scandal with a Latina news reporter.
A young, vigorous Republican business oriented candidate will be able to win in financially ravaged California.
Jerry Brown’s political baggage from over 4 decades of political nonsense will also be campaign fodder for the GOP media campaign – from the appointment of Rose Bird as California Supreme Court Chief Justice to the oppositon to Proposition 13 to sleeping on a mattress while he was governor.
Please Jerry run……Run Jerry run…..

Poll Watch: Meg Whitman in Tie With Jerry Brown for California Governor in 2010 – Leading All Others

The latest poll from Rasmussen is extremely favorable for former eBay CEO Meg Whitman in the race for California Governor in 2010.The race may be nearly two years away, but early match-ups for the 2010 gubernatorial election in California show that it’s likely to be a close one.
With the state’s current Republican governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, ineligible for reelection, the most prominent name mentioned on the GOP side is former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, and for now she beats two of the three leading early contenders for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
The Poll:
- Meg Whitman – 38% Vs. Jerry Brown (California Attorney General and former Governor – 40%
- Meg Whitman – 37% Vs. Gavin Newsom (San Francisco Mayor) – 34%
- Meg Whitman – 41% Vs. Antonio Villaraigosa (Los Angeles Mayor) – 34%
Favorability:
Forty-three percent (43%) of California voters view Whitman favorably, including 10% Very Favorable, while 22% view her unfavorably. Just five percent (5%) have a Very Unfavorable opinion of Whitman. A third of voters (34%) don’t know enough about her to form an opinion.
Brown is the most well-known name to California voters and is viewed favorably by 46%, including 24% who say that view is Very Favorable. Thirty-eight percent (38%) have an unfavorable opinion of Brown, with 26% Very Unfavorable. Just 16%, however, are not sure what they think of the 70-year-old Brown who has been a fixture in California politics for nearly 40 years.
Newson is viewed favorably by 36%, unfavorably by 41%, and 23% are not sure what they think of him. Thirteen percent (13%) have a Very Favorable opinion of Newsom and 25% a Very Unfavorable view. Villaraigosa’s ratings are 38% favorable, with 13% Very Favorable, and 42% unfavorable, including 27% Very Unfavorable. Twenty percent (20%) are not sure what they think of Villaraigosa.
Flap had mentioned that since Steve Poizner, California’s only statewide elected office holder, was running for Governor that perhaps Whitman should should run for the United States Senate instead. But, with these excellent poll numbers, it is fiull speed ahead with the governor’s race.
But, what will a contested GOP primary election do to her unfavorability ratings?

The Protect Marriage Coalition (Pro California Proposition 8) Files Legal Briefs Attacking California Attorney General Jerry Brown’s Arguments Supporting Gay Marriage
California Proposition 8 supporters yesterday filed legal briefs in the ongoing battle in the California Supreme Court over the constitutionality of California Proposition 8 that restored the traditional definition of marriage (one man and one woman) by California Constitutional Amendment last November.
Gay-marriage opponents filed legal briefs Monday accusing California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown of having “invented an entirely new theory,” one that “fails at every level,” in his quest to find a reason to invalidate Proposition 8, which passed with 52% of the vote in November.
“The people have the final word on what the California Constitution says,” lawyers for the Protect Marriage Coalition wrote. “The practical result of the attorney general’s theory is that the people can never amend the Constitution to overrule judicial interpretations of inalienable rights.”
The filing, which was co-written by Whitewater prosecutor and Pepperdine Law School Dean Kenneth Starr, came in response to a brief filed two weeks ago by the attorney general in which Brown surprised legal experts with a novel theory to argue that Proposition 8 should be invalidated.
Brown’s theory, Starr wrote, is “utterly without foundation in this court’s case law” and “is not only unprecedented but contradicts the most basic understanding of the role of the judiciary in a constitutional democracy.”
The attorney general has a legal duty to uphold state laws, and Brown, though he personally supports same-sex marriage, had pledged to defend Proposition 8 after gay-rights activists and California cities filed lawsuits challenging it the day after the election.
But in a move that outraged supporters of Proposition 8 and took even gay-rights activists by surprise, Brown’s brief instead urged the court to toss the proposition, declaring that “the amendment process cannot be used to extinguish fundamental constitutional rights without compelling justification.” Brown argued that the California Constitution protects the right to marry as inalienable.
Legal experts said Starr and the Protect Marriage coalition had made a strong counter-argument in their filing Monday.
Santa Clara University Law professor Gerald Uelmen, an expert on the state high court, said it “hits the nail on the head.”
“If you think of the Constitution as a compact between the people and those who govern us, to say the people have no power to amend a court’s ruling simply because the court . . . says this is an inalienable right — I think that is pretty far out.”
