Mitt Romney Watch: Romney Missed Chance to Keep Tavares Jailed
Daniel Tavares Jr. now faces murder charges in the killing of the Graham, Wash., couple, only months after he was released from jail by Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Kathe M. Tuttman’s decision.
Tavares, who already had served time after using a carving knife to kill his mother, was rearrested just after his June prison release on charges of assaulting prison guards. Tuttman refused prosecutors’ request to set his bail at $50,000, and released him in July. Tavares was ordered to continue to see his probation officer, but he skipped his next court date and left the state.
And, you remember the father of the slain newly-married bride, Darrel Slater, has also called on Mitt Romney to be held accountable:
“He was the governor — he picked this judge,†Beverly Mauck’s father, Darrel Slater, 51, told the Herald. “He should be answering for what happened.â€
Now, the Boston Herald screams: Probe: Mitt missed chance to keep Tavares jailed
Former Gov. Mitt Romney’s administration failed to act on disciplinary recommendations that would have kept ex-con killer Daniel Tavares locked up another year – and behind bars at the time he was accused of killing a newlywed couple in Washington state.
Despite Tavares’ long history of violence, the Romney-led Department of Correction took no action on recommendations that he be stripped of “good time†because of assaults on prison guards in 2003 and 2005, said sources familiar with a state probe into the case.
Instead, Tavares was allowed to cash in on those 360 days of “good time†to get out of prison July 16, 2007, sources said. It was just 123 days later that newlyweds Brian and Beverly Mauck were slaughtered in Graham, Wash.
“If that time had been (served), he would still be incarcerated and would not have killed those two individuals,†said one source familiar with the probe launched by the Patrick administration. “Tavares’ pattern of behavior before and during incarceration pointed to a person who was going to do this.â€
The revelations come one week before the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, where Romney is counting on a strong showing to propel his GOP candidacy for president.
Romney has decried the early release of Tavares by a judge, but the “good time†could have been revoked administratively while he was governor under the state prison disciplinary process, sources said.
Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom referred questions about the probe findings to the DOC, saying, “The governor’s office does not keep track of internal disciplinary reports filed against individual inmates, nor does it have specific knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the sentences or terms of release for each of the thousands of prisoners in the state penal system.â€
The investigation into the Tavares case found that the Romney administration mistakes were part of a broader pattern of lapses that stretched back to 1993. Overall, the probe uncovered six disciplinary complaints against Tavares between 1993 and 2005 that should have kept him in prison a total of 720 days, nearly two years beyond his release in July.
The DOC’s failure to act on the recommendations stretched over the administrations of Republican Govs. William Weld, Jane Swift and Romney.
But sources said the single most egregious breakdown came under Romney in 2003, when administration officials missed a 60-day deadline for filing paperwork to strip Tavares of 300 days of previously awarded “good time.â€
How long will it be before these facts make their way into 30 and 60 second television spots?
Michelle Malkin calls this a significant problem for Romney.
Stay tuned…….

John McCain Watch: McCain Responds with Negative Ad Against Mitt Romney in New Hampshire

McCain Campaign television ad: Consider
It did not take John McCain long to RESPOND to Mitt Romney’s attack ad of today:
Now, will this negative tit for tat ad war influence voters to vote for Giuliani and Huckabee?
Very possible.
Stay tuned…..
Update:
Mitt Romney in Iowa responds to the latest McCain attack ad:
Mr. Romney fired back at Mr. McCain this evening while talking to reporters on his campaign’s press bus. He insisted his own ad attacking Mr. McCain was a fair comparison between the two of them on issues, while Mr. McCain’s was quite different.
“I begin the ad by indicating he’s an honorable man,†Mr. Romney said. “I believe he is a good person. I make no attacks on his character, no attacks of a personal nature whatsoever. I’ve just seen the text of his ad. It’s obviously of a very differnet nature. It’s an attack ad. It attacks me personally. It’s nasty. It’s mean-spirited. Frankly, it tells you more about Senator McCain than it does about me that he’d run an ad like that.
Later, when a reporter followed up with him, he expanded.
“It’s reminicent of what he did against George W. Bush in 2000, which as you recall, he accused President Bush of twisting the truth like Bill Clinton,†he said. “Again, this is the kind of nasty, personal attack, which really doesn’t have a place in this process.â€
Yeah, right Mitt. You have been caught firing off negative ads against McCain and Huckabee. Now, you will have to take it just like you have been dishing it out.
Where is the GOP 11th commandment when you need it?

Mitt Romney Watch: Is Mitt Desperate?

The latest anti-McCain television ad from Mitt Romney now “on air” in New Hampshire
David Brody over at the Christian Broadcasting Network asks the question: Is Romney Desperate?
Here is the latest anti-Huckabee ad now “on air” in Iowa.

So, is Mitt worried? Is he desperate?
Obviously.
Romney is trailing in Iowa to Mike Huckabee in most all of the polls and John McCain is making a run at him in New Hampshire.
Will Romney gain by these negative attack ads?
No…….
Listen to Brother Brody:
Fair or not, perceived or otherwise, Romney has developed the reputation as someone who will change positions or just say anything to get elected President. When he goes negative against Huckabee and McCain, it plays into the perception that is already formed about him. It makes him look desperate. The mental picture is that Romney’s arms are flailing in every direction looking to hit something. McCain on taxes may work but Romney has some of his own issues with increasing fees in Massachusetts. Hitting Huckabee on immigration may also work but Romney needs to duck for cover on that issue too because of some of his past statements.
The problem here for Romney is that he’s not pure on these issues either so everytime he attacks, he gives his opponents a chance to strike back. John McCcain has been skewering Romney lately by mouth and press release.
Flap thinks Romney may have just sunk himself with his unlimited money paying for negative ads and large media buys, impatience and blatant desperation.
Look at the PUSHBACK by McCain:

But, we will see in a few days, now won’t we?
Stay tuned……

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney Attacks McCain for Attacking Bush in 2000
Mitt Romney’s response to John McCain’s attack on Romney’s attack ads is a replay of an attack ad McCain used against President Bush in 2000:

McCain 2000 Attack Ad Compared Bush To Clinton
WOW!
Nasty Mitt and Cranky McCain will be going at this for how many days?
Flap bets the voters tire of both of them……
Stay tuned for undoubtedly another round of “attacks.”
Update:
Hell’s bells now the National Review is smacking down the New Hampshire Union Leader for giving their guy Romney a bad rap and endorsing McCain:
The Union Leader’s advocacy of John McCain has become so fierce and lopsided that it has practically transformed itself into a pro-McCain 527 organization. It has not formalized the arrangement, which is lucky for it: If it had, McCain would, on his campaign-finance principles, have to try to shut it down.
But, what about Romney hagiogrpoher, Hugh Hewitt at Town Hall dot com, Matt Drudge and the Politico – all Romney shills?
Flap thinks the Romney folks protest too much!
Update #2:
The McCain campaign now directs everyone to view this anti-Romney video:

“All of the Old Comments From the 1994 and 2002 Campaigns that Mitt Romney Wishes Would Go Away.”Â
It is funny and ironic as Jim Geraghty points out that the ad was created by two ad guys, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer… who now work for Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney Watch: New Romney TV Ad Goes Negative on Huckabee Foreign Policy; Update: Huckabee Calls Romney “Dishonest”

Romney for President Campaign Ad: Ready
Mitt Romney is going negative on McCain in New Hampshire and negative on Mike Huckabee in Iowa. It helps to have a large checkbook.
How will Team Huckabee respond?
Update:
Governor Huckabee took an indirect shot at his rival Mitt Romney, who has been shelling both Huckabee and John McCain with negative ads, or as the Romney campaign calls them †contrast†ads, on both flanks. Huckabee said was asked if he planned on going “negative†to counter these ads against him. Huckabee said he didn’t plan on going negative, but wanted to show that a “positive campaign worksâ€.
However, Huck then then dropped the hammer with this phrase:
†If you are dishonest in getting the job, then you’ll be dishonest in carrying the job. I think that’s what is at risk here,â€he said, alluding to Romney, but never specifically naming him.
Update #2:
Mike Huckabee responds to Romney attacks with a generic ANTI- Anti-attack ad (now on air in Iowa):

Mitt Romney Watch: New TV AD Attacks McCain on Taxes and Illegal Immigration; Update: Team McCain Strikes Back at Romney

Romney For President Campaign Ad: Future
Governor Mitt Romney strikes back at Senator John McCain with this contrast-attack television ad in New Hampshire. But, Romney has his own problems with illegal immigration.
Will McCain respond with an ad of his own – highlighting Romney’s illegal aliens tending his mansion garden?
Update:
Team McCain strikes back at the Romney ad.
John McCain:
“If there’s any doubt that we’re doing well, it’s when Mitt Romney starts attacking. He’s attacking Huckabee out here in Iowa. I’m familiar with tailspins and I think he’s in one. Look, on the issue of immigration, my position is clear: We have to secure the borders, the borders have to be secured first. As president I would have the governors in the border states certify that the borders are secure. We learned a lesson and the message is they want the borders secured first. Then we go on to a temporary worker program and addressing the issue comprehensively. Look, I’ve never voted for a tax increase — Governor Romney increased taxes. I don’t know how to respond to a lot of his charges because tomorrow he may have a different position. … [Governor Romney has changed positions] on every issue, it’s a matter of record. And I haven’t changed.â€
Update #2:
Marc Santora over at the NYT highlights misleading Romney statements about McCain.
Specifically, Mr. Romney assails Mr. McCain on both tax policies and immigration. On both topics, the commercial presents facts that could be construed either as selective or worse, misleading.
