Colin Powell Endorses Obama for President and Says It’s NOT About Race

    powell-endorses-Obama

It has been rumored since July that Colin Powell would endorse Barack Obama for President and he did this morning on NBC News, Meet the Press.

Flap will post the video next but should it be taken down from You Tube the link for the NBC video is here:

    The transcript is here.

    Colin Powell said this:

I’m an American, first and foremost, and I’m very proud–I said, I’ve said, I’ve said to my beloved friend and colleague John McCain, a friend of 25 years, “John, I love you, but I’m not just going to vote for you on the basis of our affection or friendship.” And I’ve said to Barack Obama, “I admire you.  I’ll give you all the advice I can.  But I’m not going to vote for you just because you’re black.”

    Yet, then there is this:

MR. BROKAW:  And you are fully aware that there will be some–how many, no one can say for sure–but there will be some who will say this is an African-American, distinguished American, supporting another African-American because of race.

GEN. POWELL:  If I had only had that in mind, I could have done this six, eight, 10 months ago.  I really have been going back and forth between somebody I have the highest respect and regard for, John McCain, and somebody I was getting to know, Barack Obama.  And it was only in the last couple of months that I settled on this.  And I can’t deny that it will be a historic event for an African-American to become president.  And should that happen, all Americans should be proud–not just African-Americans, but all Americans–that we have reached this point in our national history where such a thing could happen.  It will also not only electrify our country, I think it’ll electrify the world.

Well, six months ago it wasn’t even clear that Barack Obama would win the Democrat nomination over Hillary Clinton. Rush Limbaugh like Flap doubts Powell’s comments about race.

“Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race,” Limbaugh wrote in an e-mail. “OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I’ll let you know what I come up with.”

Michelle Malkin says no to the race issue and says it is Powell’s social liberalism that leads him to endorse Obama.

One last note: I see in comments that many believe Powell supports Obama because he is black. Powell has said electing a black president would be “electrifying.” He is a staunch supporter of government racial preferences.

It’s a mistake, though, to attribute Powell’s endorsement primarily to some kind of race loyalty.

It’s Obama’s social liberalism, not his skin color, that attracts Powell most.

Flap thinks race played a prominent role in the rationale for the Obama endorsement but his treatment by the Leftist Washington elite and his hatred of George W. Bush is a close second.

One prominent conservative who knows both McCain and Powell said that for all the secretary of state’s criticism of McCain and his praise of Obama, the move had less to do with the two candidates for president than the current occupant of the Oval Office.

“Powell cares a lot about his reputation with Washington elites, and he thinks he was badly damaged by his relationship with the Bush administration,” said this Republican. “So this is a way to make up for what he regarded as not being treated well by the Bush administration, not being given the due deference he thinks he deserves.”

And that Powell would make his decision known in the closing weeks of the election, as it becomes increasingly clear that Obama is the favorite, reflects a calculated political move, says this source.

“Let’s be honest — do we think Powell would be doing this if Obama had been trailing 6 or 7 points in the polls?” the source asked, deeming Powell’s endorsement “a profile in conventional wisdom.”

So, what will be the net effect of the Powell endorsement?

Colin Powell will feel better about himself and will now be invited to the New York and Washington cocktail parties. But, beyond this –  as Flap said before – not much.

Colin Powell to Endorse Barack Obama on Meet the Press This Sunday?

Former Bush Administration Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator, Democrat Presidential nominee Barack Obama

It has been rumored quite a few times that former Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell would endorse Barack Obama for President. The latest poop is that Colin Powell will take the opportunity to finally make the endorsement on Sunday during his appearance on Meet The Press.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell, once considered a potential running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), now may endorse his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), according to Republican sources. But an air of mystery surrounds Powell’s planned live appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and no one is sure what he will say.

Powell, 71, a professional soldier for 35 years, has advised the last three Republican presidents.

The general’s camp is being coy about what he might or might not say on Sunday. But some McCain advisers suspect, without being sure, that Powell will endorse Obama.

“It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain,” a McCain official said. “It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.”

Powell, a four-star Army general, was national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan; chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1991 Persian Gulf war, when George H.W. Bush was president; and President George W. Bush’s first secretary of State,

Powell has consulted with both Obama and McCain, and the general’s camp has indicated in the past that he would not endorse.

Flap has maintained that it was just a matter of time for Powell to endorse Obama who he has said “would be electrifying” as President.

    Isn’t it all about race?

    Come on now…….

Colin Powell Says Barack Obama Win “Would Be Electrifying”

    barackpowell2

Colin Powell says he is undecided for whom he would back for President.

Former Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday that he has not yet decided which candidate to back in this year’s presidential race.

The election of an African-American president “would be electrifying,” Powell told a George Washington University audience, “but at the same time [I have to] make a judgment here on which would be best for America.

“I have been watching both individuals, I know them both extremely well, and I have not decided who I am going to vote for. And I’m interested to see what the debates are going to be like because we have to get off of this ‘lipstick on a pig’ stuff and get into issues,” he said.

There has been little doubt that Powell would endorse and support Obama even though he has contributed financially the maximum to John McCain.

    Isn’t it all about race?

John McCain Watch: Colin Powell for Vice President?

    PowellandMcCain

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator John McCain

With the selection of Senator Joe Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate, the ball is now in John McCain’s court to name his Vice Presidential selection. The formal announcement will be made next Friday at a campaign event in Dayton, Ohio.

A name not previously mentioned in the conventional wisdom is former General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Colin Powell. There have been rumors that General Powell will be endorsing Barack Obama at the Democrat cnvention next week. But, Powell has already contributed the maximum to Team McCain.

Team McCain floated the notion of a pro-choice Vice Presidential selection last week and Powell is pro-choice on abortion. Of course, so are Tom Ridge, Joe Lieberman and Rudy Giuliani.

Now, there is this trial balloon floated at Politico.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Powell would be a good choice if the campaign began to focus on foreign policy and military issues but it is NOT. This campaign will be about domestic issues in key battleground states and gender politics.

John McCain would best consider Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal or Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Colin Powell NOT Attending Democrat Convention

    barackpowell2

Former George W. Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator Barack Obama

Despite Bill Kristol’s musings yesterday on Fox News, Colin Powell says he will not be attending the Democrat convention in Denver.

Kristol says the endorsement is not “a done deal” and the Fox story quotes Powell’s spokeswoman as saying he is not going to either convention. Powell himself said the same thing to ABC News. “I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings,” he said. “I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear.”

Powell who has already sent a $2,300 check to John McCain would be booed by the Left in Denver anyway. Jim Geraghty thinks the endorsement is “huge and great news for Obama.”

    Flap NOT so much.

A Powell spokeswoman now denies report

    george-bush-farts-on-colin-powell

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and President Bush

Per William Kristol on Fox News, Colin Powell will be endorsing Barack Obama for President at the Denver Democrat convention and will speak Wednesday night. Hillary Clinton and keynoter Mark Warner will speak Tuesday night.

It has been rumored for some time that the “disgruntled” not-reappointed former George W. Bush Secretary of State would try to stab the GOP in the back.

    What will the impact be?

    Minimal.

The Left will ONLY barely tolerate Powell and another former General, Wesley Clark, has already made an ass of himself for Obama.

Flap won’t mention the racial aspect in this endorsement.

Barack Obama Watch: Colin Powell to Endorse Obama?

    barackpowell2

Former Bush Administration Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator Barack Obama

The buzz the past few days since it was released that Barack Obama had met with former Bush Administration Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, has been that an endorsement of Obama for President was imminent.

Robert Novak, the conservative pundit has written and was interviewed on Fox News repeating the mantra of an Obama endorsement by Powell.

Jim Geraghty, too, writes that it is almost a done deal and that it matters.

I’ll be stunned if Colin Powell does not endorse Barack Obama. (Today brings word that they met June 18.) Right now, Powell’s going to be largely, if not primarily, remembered as the man who sold the Iraq war at the United Nations. When Powell passes on, a reference to “showcasing erroneous intelligence about weapons of mass destruction that were not found in Iraq” will crop up no later than the third sentence in his obituary.

It’s hard to believe that’s how he wants to be remembered, demonized by nearly half the country and most of the world’s elites as “Bush’s enabler.”

But if Powell endorses Obama, it will not only be a PR and momentum bonanza for the Democratic nominee, but the retired general will be touted as the man who put his credibility on the line for Obama. The questions surrounding Obama – experience, accomplishments, familiarity with the military and national security issues, connection to middle-American values – are all Powell’s strengths. If the retired general and former Secretary of State says Obama will do okay as commander-in-chief, a lot of Americans will exhale with relief.

Flap disagrees. If Colin Powell endorses Obama it will mean little in the campaign. Why?

    1. Colin Powell is African American and race will matter in this Presidential campaign. Name one African American that is NOT endorsing Obama. Really….name one.

    2. The Left wing of the Democrat Party will NEVER forgive Powell for being George Bush’s enabler for the Iraq War and that he worked in the Bush I and Reagan Administrations.

Powell has already contributed the maximum to John McCain’s campaign and will be questioned as a hypocritical flip-flopper should he do likewise for Obama.

There is too much downside for Powell to be involved in this race. But, should he throw his support behind Obama he will be beaten up by the left and right – neutralizing any gain for Obama or Powell.

Reuters: Powell says U.S. should talk to Iran, not attack

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell does not believe the United States will attack Iran and says Washington should speak to Tehran and Syria.

Powell, who said Iraq was in a civil war on Wednesday, was speaking to the Leaders in London Business Forum on Thursday.

Answering a question from Reuters, Powell said: “Iran is a regional power and it will have to be dealt with. We should find ways to speak to them and also speak to the Syrians.”

And where was Powell during the Reagan and Bush I administrations? Has Colin gone soft or does he wish to stick a finger in the eye of President Bush?

    Probably the latter.

However, he is WRONG on Iran.

How can you negotiate with terrorist minded NUTTERS who wish to impose Iranian radical theocratic/Islamic/Sharia hegemony over the entire Middle East AND “WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE MAP?”

Colin collect your speaking fees and go on the tour with Bill Clinton and then RETIRE……….
