President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Santorum Takes the Lead in Gallup Tracking Poll

According to the latest Gallup Presidential tracking poll.

Note, that Mitt Romny has pulled even with President Obama in the general election poll.

This polling is within the margin of error, but as the Weekly Standard points out, Rick Santorum has come up a long way.

Rick Santorum, who trailed Mitt Romney by 20 points eight days ago, has now taken the lead in Gallup’s national polling.  In the Gallup poll released on February 8, Romney led Santorum by the tally of 37 to 17 percent. In the current Gallup poll, Santorum has moved into the lead — 32 to 31 percent.

While I do not think Rick Santorum is electable in a general election against President Obama, this result pretty much shows the GOP voters disgust with Mitt Romney.

Super Tuesday will tell the story and my bet now is that the nominee choice will come down to the convention in Florida this summer.

President 2012 Poll Watch: Obama Now Beating All GOP Contenders in Swing States

U.S. President Barack Obama holds up a padlock alongside Master Lock’s Senior Vice President Bob Rice as Obama tours the factory in Milwaukee, Wisconsin February 15, 2012

According to the latest Fox News Poll.

A new Fox News poll of key battleground states — Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin — shows the same.

    • Obama leads Romney 47% to 39% – +8
    • Obama tops Santorum 48% to 38% – +10
    • Obama beats Paul 48% to 37% – +11
    • Obama crushes Gingrich 52% to 32% – +20

    Wow have things changed!

    But……

America feels the economy is a little better and the GOP Presidential candidates are bashing the hell out of themselves – exposing all of their flaws.

So, really what do you expect?

I will add one more – the GOP Presidential field is very weak.

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Santorum 39% Vs. Romney 27% Vs. Gingrich 15% Vs. Paul 10%

    Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum

According to the latest Rasmussen Poll.

Follow the bouncing ball. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has now bounced to a 12-point lead over Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Santorum with 39% support to the former Massachusetts governor’s 27%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich follows from a distance with 15% of the vote, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul runs last with 10%. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

This race is almost becoming interesting.

But, will Romney go “NUCLEAR” against Santorum and allow Gingrich to regain the anti-Romney mantle?

President 2012 Poll Watch: Obama Handling All GOP Contenders

According to the latest CBS News Poll.

President Obama holds a significant lead over each of his potential Republican opponents in the general election, according to a poll released Tuesday by CBS News and the New York Times. That includes Mitt Romney, who was even with Mr. Obama last month.

The new survey shows the president leading Romney by six points, 48 percent to 42 percent, among registered voters. Last month, the two men were tied at 45 percent each.

Mr. Obama’s lead over former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has surged to a lead in national polls, is eight points: 49 percent to 41 percent.

Romney’s drop in support against the president is attributable to a shift among independents. Last month, independents favored the former Massachusetts governor by eight points over Mr. Obama. In the new survey, Mr. Obama holds the edge, leading Romney among independents by nine points.

The president holds double-digit leads over the other two GOP candidates in the race, Rep. Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Mr. Obama leads Paul 50 percent to 39 percent – an 11 point margin – and he leads Gingrich 54 percent to 36 percent, a difference of 18 points.

    This is not surprising.

The economy and unemployment numbers are getting a little better, it is almost Spring and Americans are feeling more optimistic about the future. So, why not give Obama the benefit of the doubt?

Look at the alternatives on the GOP side = pretty slim pickin’s.

Unless some other GOP candidates emerge, perhaps from a “brokered” convention, it will be a long summer and fall for the Republican Party.

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Is Mitt Romney Electable?

    Graphic from PPP Polling

Mitt Romney’s argument that he is the most electable Republican against President Obama bares close scutiny, according to the latest PPP Polls.

One thing that has remained constant in the ever changing GOP Presidential race is that Mitt Romney is the strongest candidate against Barack Obama…at least until now.  PPP’s newest national poll finds Romney trailing Obama by 7 points at 49-42, while Santorum trails by only 5 points at 49-44.

Santorum’s net favorability is 21 points better than Romney’s. Santorum’s at -7 (39/46), while Romney is at -28 (29/57). That’s mostly because Republicans like Santorum a lot better (+40 at 62/22 to Romney’s +2 at 43/41). But Santorum also does a good deal better with independents, coming in at -6 (40/46) to Romney’s -23 (32/55). In the head to heads Obama leads Romney by 9 with independents, but has only a 4 point advantage on Santorum with that group.
Ron Paul has nearly matched Romney on the electability front, trailing Obama by 8 points at 49-41. Paul does the best of the Republican candidates with independents, with only a 1 point deficit to Obama. Newt Gingrich has firmly established himself as the Republican who would be the biggest general election disaster, trailing 52-40 with a 19 point deficit among independents.

Why is Obama doing so well? It has a lot to do with this finding: 41% of voters think the economy’s getting better to only 31% who think it’s getting worse with 27% thinking that it’s staying about the same. This is the first time since Obama took office that we’ve asked a question in this vein on a national poll and found more voters feeling optimistic than pessimistic about the way things are heading.

If the GOP nominates Mitt Romney, he will lose by as much or more than John McCain.  Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are flawed candidates, who also will lose. There is no path to victory for any of these pols, especially with an improving economy.

If the GOP wants to win, they need to nominate someone outside the current field – an accomplished Governor like Bobby Jindal, Mitch Daniels or Chris Christie.

    The entire poll is here.

Poll Watch: 46 Per Cent of Catholics Approve of President Obama

According to the latest Gallup Poll.

Catholics’ views of President Obama were little changed during a week in which the administration battled publicly with Catholic leaders over whether church-affiliated employers should have to pay for contraception as part of their employees’ health plans. An average of 46% of Catholics approved of the job Obama was doing as president last week, compared with 49% the prior week, a change within the margin of sampling error.

Although Catholic Church leaders’ opposition to the requirement dates back to last fall, when the policy was being laid out, the controversy erupted and made headlines in the last 10 days, after the Obama administration announced that religious-based employers would ultimately have to comply. The Obama administration’s rules would have forced organizations affiliated with the church — such as Catholic hospitals, service organizations, and universities — to pay for employee healthcare services that go against their belief that Catholics should not use contraception.

Well, this is a little different from the Rasmussen Poll earlier today, but what is striking is that ONLY 46% approve of President Obama and the job he is doing. Although the cahnge from the previous weeks is within the margin of error, since the American Catholic Bishops are not pleased and will be continually be broadcasting their displeasure from the pulpit, eventually you will see some movement in the polls – and it won;t be upward.

If I was President, I would not want to risk re-election with a key swing demographic group, who traditionally has given me better approval ratings than the average American population, less than 50 per cent.

Poll Watch: 59 Per Cent of Catholics Disapprove of President Obama

    Prescription contraceptives

According to the latest Rasmussen Poll.

Catholics strongly disapprove of the job President Obama is doing as the debate continues over his administration’s new policy forcing Catholic institutions to pay for contraception they morally oppose. While the president’s overall job approval ratings have improved over the past couple of months, they have remained steady among Catholics.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% of likely Catholic voters nationwide at least somewhat disapprove of the president’s job performance, while 40% at least somewhat approve. But the passion’s on the side of those who don’t like the job he’s doing: 44% Strongly Disapprove versus 19% who Strongly Approve.

The survey of 3,500 Likely Voters was conducted February 6-12, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Not really a surprise, especially with the Priests discussing the issue with the faithful during Mass.

The pressure on the President will intensify, if there are not further concessions by his Administration.

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Santorum SURGES to Catch Romney

According to the latest Gallup Poll.

Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are now statistically tied for the lead in Republican registered voters’ preferences for the 2012 GOP nomination — 32% to 30%, respectively. Newt Gingrich, who led the field as recently as late January, is now third, favored by 16%, while Ron Paul’s support has dwindled to 8%, the lowest level yet seen for him in 2012.

These results are based on Gallup Daily tracking from Feb. 8-12 — the first Gallup tracking period conducted wholly after Santorum’s sweep of the Feb. 7 state nominating contests.

Santorum’s 14-point surge in support since just before Feb. 7, from 16% to 30%, appears to have come at the expense of all of his major opponents. Support for Romney and Gingrich has declined by five and six percentage points, respectively, over the same period, and support for Paul, by three points. The percentage unsure has increased slightly, from 11% to 13%.

It looks like Republican voters are turning to Rick Santorum as the anti-Romney conservative candidate.

And, this poll is bad news for Mitt Romney as it is readily apparent that a majority of GOP voters just don’t want him as the Republican nominee.

Plus, it looks like it is over for Newt Gingrch unless he can make a substantial come back on Super Tuesday in March.

My hope is still for a “brokered convention” with a better candidate, like Governor Mitch Daniels or Bobby Jindal winning the nomination.

  • China,  Polling

Poll Watch: Americans View China as Leading Economic Power

According to the latest Gallup Poll.

Americans believe China is the leading economic power in the world today, by a significant margin over the United States. This is the second consecutive year the majority of Americans have viewed China as economically dominant; previously, China held a smaller lead. By contrast, in 2000, Americans overwhelmingly believed the U.S. was the leading economic power.

The U.S. economic downturn and the continued expansion of the Chinese economy are the likely factors behind Americans’ belief that China is the world’s top economic power.

Still, the vast majority of Americans name either the U.S. or China as the world’s leading economic power. Relatively few Americans regard Japan (7%), the European Union (3%), India (2%), or Russia (less than 1%) in those terms. Japan has ranked third in recent years, but finished ahead of China in 2000.

    Wow!

How far has the American economy fallen in the minds of its own people?

And, to think today the main debate in the country is whether ObamaCare should make Catholic Charities pay for birth control pills and sterilization for its employees.

  • American Economy,  Polling

Poll Watch: 22 Per Cent of Americans Satisfied With the Way Things Are Going

According to the latest Gallup Poll.

The majority of Americans remain dissatisfied with the way things are going in the U.S., but the percentage who are satisfied continues to increase. Satisfaction, now at 22%, is higher than at any point since last spring.

Thirteen percent of Americans were satisfied with the state of the nation when President Barack Obama took office in January 2009. This percentage increased to as high as 36% in August 2009 before falling to the lower levels seen since then. As the economy struggled to recover during the past two years, and as the federal government had trouble reaching agreement on the major issues facing the country, satisfaction dropped, to as low as 11% last August and September.

The current results, based on a Feb. 2-5 Gallup poll, find satisfaction up significantly from December after slight increases each of the past two months. The increases are likely due to Americans’ greater optimism about the U.S. economy. The poll included three days of interviewing after the government released its positive employment report on Feb. 3.

22 per cent is nothing to write home about.

Let’s hope it continues to improve.

    What are the implications?

Better news for President Obama’s re-election, but the numbers are still low historically. And, as Carly Fiorina just pointed out on Fox News and who will be delivering a speech at CPAC tomorrow, small business growth remains slow, if not stagnant, due to Obama Administration policies – namely taxation and regulation.
