Senate leaders revive immigration bill
Senate leaders agreed on Thursday to revive a stalled immigration overhaul after lawmakers worked out a plan to overcome conservatives’ objections to a bill that would legalize millions of immigrants.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), a Nevada Democrat, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (news, bio, voting record), a Kentucky Republican, said in a joint statement the Senate would reconsider the legislation after completing work on an energy bill some time next week.
“We met this evening with several of the senators involved in the immigration bill negotiations,” the two leaders said in a statement.
“Based on that discussion, the immigration bill will return to the Senate floor after completion of the energy bill.”
The new agreement would limit the number of amendments and include a measure to ensure funding for tighter border security measures, something sought by conservatives, lawmakers and aides said.
Ok, let’s see the amendments or NO DEAL.
If the GOP and President attempt to RAM this bill though the Senate next week, you may see all GOP Presidential candidates directly criticize the President.
And the GOP base?
GOP voters have already deserted the President.

Giuliani Notes: Rudy 30% Thompson 22% McCain 18% Romney 11% in Latest Harris National GOP Interactive Poll
REPUBLICAN VOTERS FIRST CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT
The Question:
“There are many different people who are, or who may become, candidates for president in the Republican primaries starting in January, 2008. Based all that you know or have heard up to now about the people listed below, for which one person would you be most likely to vote?
The GOP NUTS:
And Rudy continues to lead the field.
Thompson’s candidacy seems to be impacting Romney and McCain the most.
But, it is too early to assess Thompson’s strength until he actually declares and is stump tested.

Mitt Romney Watch: Brownback Calls Out Mitt on Abortion
Yesterday it was John McCain dumping on Romney for FLIPPING on abortion.
Romney’s own comments on the abortion issue have been as follows:
1994: Mitt Romney was pro-choice:“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.” (Joan Vennochi, “Romney’s Revolving World,” The Boston Globe, 3/2/06)
2001: Mitt Romney was not pro-choice:“I do not wish to be labeled pro-choice.” (Mitt Romney, Letter to the Editor, The Salt Lake Tribune, 7/12/01)
2002: Mitt Romney was again pro-choice:“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose. This choice is a deeply personal one … Women should be free to choose based on their own beliefs, not mine and not the government’s.” (Stephanie Ebbert, “Clarity Sought On Romney’s Abortion Stance,” The Boston Globe, 7/3/05)
November 2004: Mitt Romney said he converted to the pro-life position.Romney said he changed his views after meeting with Harvard scientists on stem-cell research: ‘It hit me very hard that we had so cheapened the value of human life in a Roe v. Wade environment that it was important to stand for the dignity of human life.’ (Karen Tumulty, “What Romney Believes,” Time, 5/21/07)
May 2005: Mitt Romney reaffirmed that he was “absolutely committed†to support the pro-choice position.
Six months after he claimed to have converted to the pro-life position, Romney stated: “I am absolutely committed to my promise to maintain the status quo with regards to laws relating to abortion and choice and so far I’ve been able to successfully do that and my personal philosophical views about this issue is not something that I think would do anything other than distract from what I think is a more critical agenda …” (Mitt Romney, Remarks At Press Conference, 5/27/05)
January 2007: Mitt Romney acknowledged he was “effectively pro-choice.”On January 29, 2007 during a visit to South Carolina, Romney stated: “Over the last multiple years, as you know, I have been effectively pro-choice.” (Bruce Smith, “Romney Campaigns in SC with Sen. DeMint,” The Associated Press, 1/29/07)
February 2007: Mitt Romney stated that he “was always for life.â€
On another campaign stop in South Carolina, Romney stated: “I am firmly pro-life… I was always for life.” (Jim Davenport, “Romney Affirms Opposition to Abortion,” The Associated Press, 2/9/2007)
Here is Mitt Romney on abortion in 2002:
As Flap has said before, he can accept Romney’s conversion to a pro-life position but the main question is Romney SINCERE or POLITICALLY EXPEDIENT?
Most probably the latter. This makes him a LIAR and disqualifies him from the Presidency.
The Brownback campaign has a suggetion for Mitt:
“The best advice for Mitt Romney comes from Mark Twain: ‘Always tell the truth. That way, you don’t have to remember what you said.’â€
OUCH……….

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Nation Lacks Strong Leadership
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, left, is seen standing besides former FBI director Louis Freeh during a rally in Wilmington, Del., Thursday, June 14, 2007.
Giuliani: Nation lacks strong leadership
Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, in an indirect swipe at President Bush, said Thursday the overwhelming attitude that the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction reflects a lack of leadership.
The nation’s bleak mood was evident in the most recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll in which only 21 percent said they believe things in the U.S. are heading in the right direction, the worst mark since the AP-Ipsos poll began in December 2003.
Speaking at a Flag Day rally in Wilmington, Del., Giuliani told more than 200 supporters: “What we’re lacking is strong, aggressive, bold leadership like we had with Ronald Reagan.”
The same AP-Ipsos poll found public approval with the job Bush is doing at 32 percent, matching an all-time low.
Rudy is RIGHT.
Is this a swipe at President Bush?
You betcha – as Rudy distances himself from the President and his style/lack of leadership which is sinking the GOP.
Hizzoner has outlined his 12 Commitments to the American People:
1. I will keep America on offense in the Terrorists’ War on Us.
2. I will end illegal immigration, secure our borders, and identify every non-citizen in our nation.
3. I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending.
4. I will cut taxes and reform the tax code.
5. I will impose accountability on Washington.
6. I will lead America towards energy independence.
7. I will give Americans more control over, and access to, healthcare with affordable and portable free-market solutions.
8. I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children.
9. I will reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges.
10. I will ensure that every community in America is prepared for terrorist attacks and natural disasters.
11. I will provide access to a quality education to every child in America by giving real school choice to parents.
12. I will expand America’s involvement in the global economy and strengthen our reputation around the world.
Bold, strong, direct leadership is what you get with a President Giuliani.
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani greets supporters at a rally in Wilmington, Del., Thursday, June 14, 2007.

CIA Leak Case Watch: No Delay for Libby Prison Term
Lewis “Scooter” Libby, former chief of staff to U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney after he was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for lying and obstructing the CIA leak investigation. Libby is headed back to court Thursday, June 14, 2007, to try to forestall his 2½-year prison term in the CIA leak case.
Judge Won’t Delay Libby Prison Term
A federal judge said Thursday he will not delay a 2 1/2-year prison sentence for I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, a ruling that could send the former White House aide to prison within weeks.
U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton’s decision will send Libby’s attorneys rushing to an appeals court to block the sentence and could force President Bush to consider calls from Libby’s supporters to pardon the former aide.
No date was set for Libby to report to prison but it’s expected to be within six to eight weeks. That will be left up to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, which will also select a facility.
Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted in March of lying to investigators and obstructing Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s inquiry into the 2003 leak of a CIA operative’s identity.
Will President Bush pardon Libby?
If the President doesn’t, W will be “ABSOLUTELY DONE” with the GOP base.

Dentistry Today: Colgate Warns of FAKE TOXIC Toothpaste From China
Colgate warns of fake toothpaste in U.S.
Colgate-Palmolive Co. on Thursday said counterfeit “Colgate” toothpaste that may contain a toxic chemical had been found in discount stores in four U.S. states.
“There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain diethylene glycol,” the company said in a statement.
Colgate-Palmolive said it does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in its toothpaste anywhere in the world. The chemical, known as DEG and sometimes illegally used as an inexpensive sweetener and thickening agent, is commonly found in solvents and antifreeze.
The health regulator also issued an import alert, with the aim of preventing all toothpaste from three companies in China that make the brands found to contain DEG from entering the United States.
Colgate-Palmolive said the counterfeit toothpaste was found in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. It can be recognized because it is labeled as being manufactured in South Africa, and the company does not import toothpaste to the United States from South Africa.
*********
Better stick with the name brands and forget about the “discount” brands.
And the FDA with Homeland Security better get their act together.

Harry Reid Watch: Reid – American Military Leaders are “INCOMPETENT”
Reid labels military leader ‘incompetent’
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, “incompetent” during an interview Tuesday with a group of liberal bloggers, a comment that was never reported.
Reid made similar disparaging remarks about Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said several sources familiar with the interview.
This is but the latest example of how Reid, under pressure from liberal activists to do more to stop the war, is going on the attack against President Bush and his military leaders in anticipation of a September showdown to end U.S. involvement in Iraq, according to Democratic senators and aides.
Isn’t this the same Democrat Senate Majority leader who “SURRENDERED” to President Bush on Iraq War funding just last month?
Reid lost and now needs to snipe at commanders in the field.
Nice and real classy – especially since he voted to confirm General Petraeus in January.
Flap supposes Reid needs to serve up some blue meat for his LEFT flank.
But, what about Iraq War policy?
Reid will NOW schedule a series of votes to hamper the Bush Defense Department.
Besides his comments about Pace and Petraeus, the Nevada Democrat also announced that he wants to hold more votes on ending or scaling back the U.S. military presence in Iraq.
He said Democrats would use an upcoming Defense authorization bill to continue the struggle with Bush over the conduct of the war, especially Bush’s “surge” plan to send more U.S. forces to Baghdad and surrounding regions in order to quell growing sectarian violence.
More political sniping is on the horizon. If Reid and the Democrats had ANY COJONES they would vote to defund the Iraq War and take responsibilities for the consequences.
But, they won’t. It is much easier to snipe, criticize and hold votes over and over again.
For Democrats, the Defense authorization bill is an attractive vehicle for their fight because the legislation sets policy, not funding levels, for the Pentagon, so Bush and Republicans cannot use the argument that Democrats are threatening to cut off funding for U.S. troops in the field.
Reid calling the Generals incompetent is the pot calling the kettle black. The Democrat controlled Congress has slumped in poll approval ratings and Reid must now compensate. So, look for more Iraq War votes, political posturing and ad nauseum carping on President Bush Iraq War policy.
Has Reid overplayed his hand in satiating the LEFT?
