Cindy Sheehan Watch: Sheehan Arrested AGAIN – This Time in Crawford

    sheehannovember8aweb

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan yells to fellow demonstrators as she is arrested outside of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006.

Sheehan, other protesters arrested near Bush ranch

War protester Cindy Sheehan and several fellow peace activists were arrested this morning outside President Bush’s ranch where Bush is meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and others on Iraq war policy.

Sheehan, arrested just after 11, said she and others were conducting a “peace surge” to address concerns that Bush may increase U.S. troop numbers in Iraq. The Bush administration is under mounting pressure to change its tactics in an increasingly unpopular conflict. Among the suggestions Bush is considering is a temporary surge in U.S. troops.

Just before she was arrested, Sheehan was sitting in the middle of the road near Bush’s 1,600-acre ranch. This morning’s protesters said they fully expected to be arrested for demonstrating near the ranch.

Flap supposes Mother Sheehan’s smackdown of a dead Gerald Ford was insufficient to generate sufficient BUZZ:

Usually, burying a 93 year old loved one is sorrowful but, I believe his pardon of Richard Nixon is one of the factors that have led to the untimely deaths of over 3000 American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in the Middle East.

Maybe she means LBJ or JFK?

    Indeed a MORON……

John Edwards Watch: Edwards is IN

    edwardsdecember28aweb

John Edwards shovels with student volunteers as he works in the backyard of a house in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006. The former Democratic vice presidential nominee is running for president for a second time, his campaign said Wednesday. Note the microphone attached to Edward’s shirt.
AP: Edwards shoots for White House again

Former vice presidential nominee John Edwards said Thursday that he is a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, promising “a grass roots, ground-up campaign where we ask people to take action.”

Clad in blue jeans, an open-necked shirt and with his sleeves rolled up, Edwards chose the backyard of a victim of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans’ devastated 9th Ward for his unorthodox announcement.

“We want people in this campaign to actually take action now, not later, not after the next election,” the former North Carolina senator said, sounding as much like a recruiter as a presidential campaigner.

“Instead of staying home and complaining, we’re asking Americans to help,” Edwards said. “Most of the good that has been done in New Orleans has been done by faith-based groups, charitable groups and volunteers.”

Edwards — who is calling for cuts in poverty, global warming and troops in
Iraq — chose the site to highlight his signature concern of the economic disparity that divides America.

“I’m here to announce I’m a candidate for president of the United States,” Edwards told NBC’s “Today Show” earlier Thursday, one of three back-to-back interviews by the candidate on morning news shows. “I’ve reached my own conclusion this is the best way to serve my country.”

John Edwards starts his campaign pandering to a large block of Democrat primary voters – the African American vote.

Realistically, Edwards has NO chance at the nomination with Hillary and Barack Obama in the race. He will never shed his association with the LOSING John Kerry campaign:

    edwardskerryweb

    The only question will be:

    When will Edwards withdraw?

Somalia Watch: Mogadishu Retaken by Somali Government Troops

    somaliadecember28bjpgweb

A Somali woman purchase clothes at Bakhara Market Mogadishu, Somalia, Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, for the Muslim festival of Idd ul-Hajj which will be celebrated on Saturday Dec. 30 2006. Somalia’s Islamic movement abandoned the nation’s capital on Thursday and clan militiamen poured into the streets to take control of Mogadishu, as government forces approached to within 30 kilometers (18 miles). ‘We will capture Mogadishu any time within the coming hours,’ government spokesman Abdirahman Dinari told The Associated Press, saying the country was under a state of emergency. ‘We are now at the entry points of the city.’ And the Associated Press is now reporting that government troops have entered Mogadishu.

Reuters: Mogadishu falls to Somali government troops

Triumphant Somali government forces marched into Mogadishu on Thursday after Islamist rivals abandoned the war-scarred city they held for six months before an Ethiopian-backed advance.

The flight of the Islamists was a dramatic turn-around in the volatile Horn of Africa nation after they took Mogadishu in June and spread across the south imposing sharia rule.

Terrified of yet more violence in a city that has become a byword for chaos, some Mogadishu residents greeted the arriving government troops, while others hid.

“People are cheering as they wave flowers to the troops,” said resident Abdikadar Abdulle, adding scores of government military vehicles had passed the Somalia National University west of the city center.

Parts of Mogadishu shook with the sound of gunfire and there were outbreaks of looting after leaders of the Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC) fled its base early in the morning. Some fighters ditched their uniforms to avoid reprisals.

“We have been defeated. I have removed my uniform. Most of my comrades have also changed into civilian clothes,” one former SICC fighter told Reuters. “Most of our leaders have fled.”

So, the Islamists have CUT and RUN as the Global War on Terror continues.

An old Somali man, name not given, holds his gun in Bakhara market Mogadishu Somali, Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, to defend his family from looters. In Mogadishu, gunfire echoed through the streets and hundreds of gunmen, who just hours earlier fought for Quranic rule, took off their Islamic uniforms and submitted to the command of clan elders.

AP: Government troops enter Somalia capital

Somali government troops rolled into Mogadishu unopposed on Thursday, the prime minister said, hours after an Islamic movement that tried to establish a government based on the Quran abandoned the capital.

The Islamic militia promised to take a last stand in southern Mogadishu.

“We are in Mogadishu,” Prime Minister Mohamed Ali Gedi said after meeting with local clan leaders to discuss the handover of the city. “We are coordinating our forces to take control of Mogadishu.”

Well, that did not take long to rout the Islamists. The Ethiopians obviously are not fecking around with the spread of Islamic terrorism across their borders.

Is this a lesson for the world?

For the people of Somalia – yes.

For Islamic appeasers – sadly no!

Senator Harry Reid Watch: Reid to MISS President Ford’s Funeral

    reiddecember27aweb2

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., leaves George Washington University Hospital in Washington, after visiting with Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., who is recovering from brain surgery, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006.

Looks to Flap that Harry Reid, incoming Senate Majority Leader is already on vacation. But, he is still counting votes. Is this guy a MORON or what?
AP: Reid to miss Ford funeral

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will miss the state funeral for former President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday night, opting instead to lead a delegation to South America with an expected stop at the Machu Picchu Inca ruins.

Reid, D-Nev., left Wednesday afternoon from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland with a bipartisan group of five other senators, including Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the incoming assistant majority leader, for what has been described as a weeklong visit to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

The highlight of the trip is said to be separate meetings with the presidents of the three nations, with the last one scheduled in Peru on Tuesday morning.

“They would be difficult to cancel,” Reid spokesman Jim Manley said via mobile phone as the congressional delegation took off in a U.S. military plane.

This is BULL and a JUNKET.

And shows extreme disrespect to the Ford family, the United States Senate and the American Presidency.

Other senators making the trip are Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Judd Gregg, R-N.H., Robert Bennett, R-Utah, and Ken Salazar, D-Colo.

Flap agrees with Hugh Hewitt: TURN THE PLANE AROUND.

Maybe Senators Reid and Durbin are going over their plan for the Iraq War as well:

    Cox & Forkum: Old Acquaintance

CNN: Iraqi appeals court upholds Hussein death sentence.

The Iraqi High Tribunal’s appellate chamber on Tuesday upheld Saddam Hussein’s death sentence in the Dujail massacre case, Judge Aref Shaheen announced.

Shaheen said the court’s decision was the final word in the case.

The toppled Iraqi dictator’s execution must take place before January 27, Shaheen said. Iraqi law requires a death sentence to be carried out within 30 days.

On November 5, Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for his role in the 1982 killings of 148 people in Dujail, a mostly Shiite town north of Baghdad. Hussein’s attorneys appealed, and the appellate chamber began reviewing the case December 5.

Hussein’s chief defense attorney, Khalil al-Dulaimi, said he had heard about the decision, but said it came from “an illegitimate and unconstitutional court.”

“We are not surprised by this crazy ruling,” al-Dulaimi said.

The lawyer, speaking from Amman, Jordan, said three other members of the defense team met with Hussein on Tuesday before the decision was announced and described him as being in high spirits.

Under international law, most governments have the power to stay any executions, but Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has said his government would not do so in Hussein’s case.

Since Saddam may be hanged at any time, it may not be in 2007 that the Iraqi people receive justice for Saddam’s atrocities.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Bill Simon Building a Network of California Conservative Support

    giulianidecember-18aweb

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (right) attended a 2002 news conference with California GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon.

Robert Novak in the Evans-Novak newsletter is reporting:

California conservative Republican Bill Simon, the party’s nominee for governor in 2002, has begun building a network of support in the Golden State for the prospective presidential campaign of his old boss, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R). Simon, son of the late secretary of the Treasury William Simon, was Republican nominee for governor of California in 2002. He was a prosecutor working for Giuliani, then U.S. attorney in New York City, in 1986-88.

Simon has been arranging get-acquainted meetings for Giuliani with prominent California conservatives to show them he is not all that liberal and really is a Republican.

Flap has been in contact with some folks that are working with Simon and Giuliani and will report as California campaign events unfold.

John Kerry Watch: What Goes Around?

    Power Line Via Scott Hennan

A friend of mine serving in Iraq sent me this photo and note. I received it before Christmas, but was out of the office. Priceless story it tells….

    Kerrydecember27aweb

“This is a true story…..Check out this photo from our mess hall at the US Embassy yesterday morning. Sen. Kerry found himself all alone while he was over here. He cancelled his press conference because no one came, he worked out alone in the gym w/o any soldiers even going up to say hi or ask for an autograph (I was one of those who was in the gym at the same time), and he found himself eating breakfast with only a couple of folks who are obviously not troops.

What is amazing is Bill O’Reilly came to visit with us and the troops at the CSH the same day and the line for autographs extended through the palace and people waited for two hours to shake his hand. You decide who is more respected and loved by us servicemen and women!”

Kerry is a JERK and does he expect VIP treatment after he has denigrated American troops over his entire political career?

    Probably – self righteous MORON.

WSJ: What’s Going On in Somalia?

A guide to the latest terror-war front

Though 98% Muslim and long without a functioning government, southern Somalia has not, so far, ripened into the fully fledged terrorist threat that many have feared it would. This week, however, as Ethiopia engaged Islamist Somali militiamen, Somalia became the site of a nascent regional war. The primary combatants are Somalia’s secular Transitional Federal Government (TFG), which is internationally recognized and politically supported by the U.S., and the Islamist “Islamic Courts Union” that holds sway on the ground. They are backed militarily by two fierce rivals, Ethiopia and Eritrea, respectively. The military balance appears indeterminate. Ethiopia has deployed 15,000 to 20,000 troops in Somalia. Eritrea has provided arms to the Islamic Courts militias and sent only about 2,000 troops to support them; but the Islamic Courts hold more territory than the TFG and have greater indigenous assets and popular support. Even if Somalia does not become a terrorist redoubt, it could become a potent fount of regional geopolitical instability and perhaps the next “field of jihad” unless diplomatic attention is rallied to rescue the situation.

    Read it all……

    Update:

Josh Trevino (via Hugh Hewitt) has Trevino: Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Failure of Journalism:

The Ethiopian invasion of Somalia proceeds apace, and from all reports, it proceeds at a much faster clip than anyone — including me — expected. Western journalism is struggling, and failing, to keep up.

We know about the rapidity of the Ethiopian advance thanks to the news reports that filter out of the darkness of the Horn: the NYT’s stringer reports that the front line is now near the town of Wanlaweyn, well over halfway from the campaign’s starting-point of Baidoa (itself halfway from the Ethiopian frontier to the sea) to the prize, the Somali capitol of Mogadishu. (For reference, a map of Somalia is here; rather improbably, Wanlaweyn itself has a Meetup page.) Beyond this, details are sparse: journalism fails where journalists fear to tread, and so we are reduced to reading propaganda releases from the opposing sides — see, for example, and in an indication of the rather different values in this part of the world, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi bragging about the fatality rates amongst Islamist casualties — and the reports of the few Westerners on the ground. In Somalia’s case, the latter are mostly European aid workers and the odd United Nations official. Naturally, their reportage focuses upon things that affect them, and the wishes of the men with guns closest to them. Thus media from Islamist-controlled Mogadishu cites as its only two sources the Islamists — and the International Committee of the Red Cross. And so we see in the Washington Post unsourced passages telling us: “Aid workers said … thousands of civilians battered by drought, floods and now by rockets and mortars continued to flee villages in droves.” Worse: “United Nations officials warned of a dire humanitarian crisis inside Somalia, while fears remained high that Ethiopia’s campaign could have disastrous consequences across the Horn of Africa.”

    UPDATE:

Somali Forces Prepare To Battle For Capital

    somaliadecember27bweb

Soldiers patrol in the streets Somalia after government and Ethiopian troops advanced in a decisive turnaround in the battle for control of Somalia.

Attacking at dawn, Ethiopian and Somali government troops on Wednesday drove Islamic fighters out of the last major town on the road to Mogadishu, the Islamist-held capital.

Former warlord Mohammed Dheere, who controlled the town of Jowhar before it was captured by the Council of Islamic Courts in June, led the Somali government troops, said resident Abshir Ali Gabre.

“We will attack Mogadishu tomorrow, from two directions,” Dheere told the crowd, although his statement appeared to overstep his authority. Dheere does not speak for the government or the Ethiopians.

Government spokesman Abdirahman Dinari confirmed the capture of Jowhar and said his troops were heading toward Balad, an agricultural village about 18 miles from Mogadishu. Smaller than Jowhar, it is the last town before the capital.

Thousands of Ethiopian and Somali government troops were seen in tanks heading toward Balad, said Nadifo Ali Tifow, a resident in Qalimow, a village 25 miles from Balad.

Fighting could still be heard at a military camp south of Jowhar and in the village of Lego. An Islamic official said his troops were simply entering a new phase in their battle.

“Our snakes of defense were let loose, now they are ready to bite the enemy everywhere in Somalia,” said Sheik Mohamoud Ibrahim Suley. He did not elaborate, but some Islamic leaders have threatened a guerrilla war including suicide bombings in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.
