House Passes Bill Taxing AIG and Other Employee Bonuses – Kabuki Theater

    tax-weapon

Michelle is RIGHT about referring to the passage of the House Bill today exacting 90 per cent taxes on AIG and other companies who enjoy government bailouts employee bonuses as Kabuki Theater.

Denouncing a “squandering of the people’s money,” lawmakers voted decisively Thursday to impose a 90 percent tax on millions of dollars in employee bonuses paid by troubled insurance giant AIG and other bailed-out companies.

In some cases the bonuses might be taxed 100 percent leaving the recipients with nothing.

The House vote was 328-93. Similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate and President Barack Obama quickly signaled general support for the concept.

“I look forward to receiving a final product that will serve as a strong signal to the executives who run these firms that such compensation will not be tolerated,” the president said in a statement.

“We want our money back now for the taxpayers,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “It isn’t that complicated.”

Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, said he expected local and state governments to take the remaining 10 percent of the bonuses, nullifying the pay-outs.

The bonuses are outrageous but it was President Obama who signed the economic stimulus bill that allowed them – whether he knew or understood they were in the bill. And, it was Timothy Geithner’s Treasury Department that asked Senator Chris Dodd to insert a provision in last month’s $787 billion economic- stimulus legislation that had the effect of authorizing American International Group Inc.’s bonuses.

But, the Kabuki Theater comes from Flap’s own Congressman, Elton Gallegly and the fact this TAX AS A WEAPON legislation is a BILL of ATTAINDER which is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution.

    From Congressman Gallegly’s Press Release:

“As a person with a lifetime record of opposing tax increases, today I voted for a bill to tax bonuses awarded to executives who received federal bailout money. It was the least the House could do to reclaim hard-earned taxpayer money from Wall Street firms who insult American taxpayers by rewarding those responsible for our economic crisis.

“It’s not the bill I would have preferred. I wanted to vote for the Republican alternative that would have recouped 100 percent of the bonuses. It would have done so by denying future federal funds to any company who did not recoup bonuses paid out under previous bailouts. It also would have required Treasury Department approval before companies could give future bonuses. I believe the bill would have been more effective and would have passed constitutional muster.

“Unfortunately, my Democratic colleagues—who stripped language banning bonuses from the stimulus bill and therefore allowed these payments—did not give members an opportunity to vote on the better bill.

“Right now, this was the only bill available to prevent AIG and other companies who receive bailout money to know of my outrage at giving outlandish bonuses to executives who failed the American people. These companies must get the message that the American people will no longer tolerate this behavior. Therefore, I voted for this bill.

“I look forward to working with my Democratic colleagues to pass meaningful legislation that will fix this loophole.”

The AIG bonus bill is a JOKE. The Democrats are blaming Bush and everyone knows the REAL culprits are Timothy Geithner, Chris Dodd and Barack Obama.

The Democrats are running for cover and Flap’s Representative should have voted NO today and for any additional federal government bailouts PERIOD.

Senator Arlen Specter: I AM Running as a Republican on the Republican Ticket

    Arlen Specter and Biden

Vice President Joe Biden, center right, and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., center left, shake hands as Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa., left and Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., applaud during a reception at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Friday, Feb. 27, 2009. The reception was held to honor Specter for his vote for the economic stimulus package

Specter may run as a Republican but may NOT win the GOP primary.

The Pennsylvania senior senator is not considering running as an Independent, as had been “reported” earlier Wednesday in The Hill.

“To eliminate any doubt, I am a Republican and I am running for re-election in 2010 as a Republican on the Republican ticket,’‘ Specter said Wednesday evening.

It was a dizzying day or two for Specter, who has been wooed by Gov. Ed Rendell and Vice President Joe Biden to return to his Democrat roots and switch parties. But the 79-year-old Specter is sticking with the GOP, even though the more conservative faction of the party has vowed to defeat Specter in a GOP primary.

However, should he lose the GOP primary to Club for Growth President Pat Toomey will Specter then rule out an independent run for the Senate?

He will play those cards later – obviously.

Audio: “Don’t Mess With Joe” Over Federal Stimulus Money

    Biden

The Joe Biden Gaffe machine is up and running again. This time it is about the PORKULUS or Federal Economic Stimulus Law.

JIM LEHRER: Vice President Biden had a new warning for city and county officials today: spend the federal stimulus money wisely. The officials were in Washington for a day of schooling on the $787 billion program. Biden urged them not to use it for things like swimming pools, tennis courts, or golf courses.

JOSEPH BIDEN, Vice President of the United States: Because of the rules, the president and I can’t stop you from doing some things, but I’ll show up in your city and say, “This was a stupid idea.”

You think I’m kidding? This is the only part the president was right about: Don’t mess with Joe, because I mean it. I’m serious, guys. I’m serious. I’m absolutely serious.

Don’t mess with Joe! He will be coming to a community near you.

Yesterday, California Prison Correctional authorities released an updated photo of the incarcerated Charles Manson.

California corrections officials have released a new photograph of convicted mass murderer Charles Manson, who is now bald with a thick gray beard and a swastika scar in the middle of his forehead.

The photo of the 74-year-old Manson was taken Wednesday as part of a routine update of files on inmates at Corcoran State Prison, where he is serving a life sentence for conspiring to murder seven people, said Seth Unger, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The cult leader was first sentenced to death for the 1969 murders of movie star Sharon Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger and three others stabbed and shot to death at Tate’s home in Los Angeles. The next night, two others were stabbed to death at their homes.

Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Caught in KGB Reagan-Gorbachev Ruse?

    Putin Undercover

Does this picture show Putin pretending to be a tourist? (pic: Pete Souza)

    You be the judge.

The 20-year old photo depicts two world leaders – US President Ronald Reagan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev – in Moscow.

But, according to the man who took the photo, it also captures Mr Putin disguised as a tourist.

Pete Souza, now President Obama’s official photographer, captured the moment when he worked for President Reagan during the political thaw that soon ended the Cold War.

Mr Reagan took a stroll around Red Square accompanied by the Russian leader, who then introduced him to a group of tourists.

In an interview, Mr Souza recounted being surprised at the “pointed” questions these supposed tourists asked the US leader.

They included searching enquiries on the state of human rights in the US.

The identity of the man on the left of the photo – complete with camera round his neck – was later revealed and “verified” to Mr Souza as none other than Mr Putin.

    Looks like Putin to me.

But, the Russians deny it – of course.

Duke Basketball Coach to Obama: It’s the Economy, Stupid

    slam-Obama

Duke basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, tells Obama that he should concentrate on the nation’s economy instead of the NCAA basketball tournament.

Barack Obama picked North Carolina to defeat Louisville for the NCAA championship, a relatively safe selection for a trailblazing president.

Obama spent part of Tuesday making his tournament picks for ESPN, which posted his completed bracket online Wednesday and showed the First Fan filling it out with Andy Katz on the noon edition of “Sportscenter.”

Of course, the president’s choice drew a reaction from the Tar Heels’ most intense rival.

“Somebody said that we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four, and as much as I respect what he’s doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils’ first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.

Guess “The One” picked the wrong team.

Mike Krzyzewski has a point though……

Obama Delivers an Opening for the Republican Party

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today delivered remarks on the House floor about the President’s budget that taxes, spends and borrows too much and Democrats’ taxpayer funded non-stop spending binge. He also spoke about the GOP’s better solutions that would allow middle-class families and small businesses to keep more of what they earn.

    So, says Karl Rove.

Republicans sense the opportunity. The House GOP leadership deputized the top Budget Committee Republican, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, to prepare an alternative budget. The GOP budget won’t raise taxes, gets spending and debt under control, and will result in a stronger economy with more jobs. House Republicans plan a major selling effort back home during the coming recess. Minority Leader John Boehner is already up on YouTube extolling the plan.

Senate Republicans will not prepare a complete alternative, but they will offer a robust package of amendments, with a wave of proposals for each of the three weeks the upper chamber will devote to the budget. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander foreshadowed the GOP’s theme by saying the Democratic budget taxes, spends and borrows too much.

    Remember him?

The GOP should immediately prepare and promote their alternatives to the Democrat’s tax and spend largess.

Flap thinks another “Contract with America” is being written.

Chris, don’t count on President Obama or U.S. Senate Banking Chairman Chris Dodd to return the $ hundreds of thousands they have received in campaign contributions form AIG.

    But…..

The Obama Administration has backed away from the proposal to charge wounded veterans for their own medical care. Even Jon Stewart blasted Obama.

The silliness is bound to continue though since SOMEONE will have to pay for all of the Obama government spending.

Note: Yesterday afternoon, Obama was in full teleprompter glory in Orange County, California at his townhall meeting. This evening he moves over to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to help sell his budget.

When will he make an Oprah and Jon Stewart appearance?

    • President Barack Obama may try to push through Congress a health-care overhaul, energy proposals and tax increases by using a partisan tactic that would thwart Republican efforts to block the measures.

The administration and congressional Democrats are debating whether to use a parliamentary procedure called reconciliation to advance some of the biggest items on the president’s agenda. The move would allow Democrats to approve plans to raise taxes by $1 trillion, create a cap-and-trade system to rein in greenhouse-gas emissions, and overhaul health care without a single Republican vote.

“You’re talking about running over the minority, putting them in cement and throwing them into the Chicago River,” said Senator Judd Gregg, a New Hampshire Republican who stepped down last month as Obama’s pick for Commerce secretary. “It takes the minority completely out of the process.”

    • Russian news agencies cited a top defense official Wednesday as confirming that a contract to sell powerful air-defense missiles to Iran was signed two years ago, but saying no such weapons have yet been delivered.

Russian officials have consistently denied claims the country already has provided some of the S-300 missiles to Iran. They have not said whether a contract existed.

The state-run ITAR-Tass and RIA-Novosti news agencies and the independent Interfax quoted an unnamed top official in the Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service as saying the contract was signed two years ago. Service spokesman Andrei Tarabrin told The Associated Press he could not immediately comment.

Supplying S-300s to Iran would change the military balance in the Middle East and the issue has been the subject of intense speculation and diplomatic wrangling for months.

    • Fannie Mae plans to pay retention bonuses of at least $1 million to four key executives as part of a plan to keep hundreds of employees from leaving the government-controlled company.

Rival mortgage finance company Freddie Mac is planning similar awards, but has not yet reported on which executives will benefit.

The two companies, which together own or back more than half of the home mortgages in the country, have been hobbled by skyrocketing loan defaults. Fannie recently requested $15 billion in federal aid, while Freddie has sought a total of almost $45 billion.

Fannie Mae disclosed its "broad-based" retention program in a recent regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company was only required to disclose the amounts for the top-paid executives, who will pocket at least $470,000 on top of their base salaries.

    • The Treasury Department demanded that Sen. Chris Dodd insert exemptions into the stimulus bill that allowed bailout recipients to receive bonuses, the Connecticut Democrat said on Wednesday.

According to Dodd, officials at Treasury expressed concern that if the government were to prohibit payouts, it risked being sued by companies like AIG, which had contracts stipulating that bonuses were to be paid.

At the urging of Treasury officials, Dodd modified a clause he had previously inserted into the stimulus that prohibited bonuses from being issued by bailed-out companies. An exemption was added to allow bonuses that applied to in-place contracts.

    • Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) looks like he may be facing a fresh political firestorm.

Dodd just admitted on CNN that he inserted a loophole in the stimulus legislation that allowed million-dollar bonuses to insurance giant AIG to go forward – after previously denying any involvement in writing the controversial provision. .

“We wrote the language in the bill, the deal with bonuses, golden parachutes, excessive executive compensation that was adopted unanimously by the United States Senate in the stimulus bill,” Dodd told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer this afternoon.

“But for that language, there would have been no language to deal with this at all.”

Dodd had previously said that he played no role in writing the controversial language, and was not a part of the conference committee that inserted the language in the bill. As late as today, Dodd’s spokeswoman denied the senator’s involvement.

    • "AIG is Obama's 'Katrina' — in terms of an example of government's failure — and the failure of presidential leadership."

… That's according to former Ohio Secretary of State and Family Research Council Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell.

Clearly the AIG bonus story has spurred a huge populist backlash — building on angst which had previously only been manifest during the Santelli rant — and subsequent tea parties.

But anger over the AIG bailout appears to be just now reaching fever pitch, and it is starting to look like the bonus scandal may be laid solely at the feet of Democrats (they are quickly moving to get tough with AIG, forcing people to pay back the bonus money, but it is becoming clear that some key Democratic leaders were aware of the bonuses before they were paid).

    • Carrying a message that the days of greed have ended, President Obama arrived this afternoon in Southern California, where he tried to sell his economic policies to a region coping with rising unemployment, reduced housing prices and an ongoing state budget crisis.

    • First Look at February RNC Numbers . . . Eh, Not Too Bad

An RNC source has just shared their February fundraising numbers. Considering the ominous reports from earlier in the day, they're not that bad.

$5.1 million raised — about same as January. January was $5 million raised with $7 million transferred.
$2 million reduction in expenses — a 40 percent reduction.
$24 million cash on hand up $1 million from January.
      No debt.

    • It’s been known for a while now that Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) has been planning to form a caucus of “moderate” Senate Democrats hoping to soak up special interest cash in exchange for blocking the progressive agenda. I’m told he more formally announced the formation of this group this morning, on Morning Joe, to acclaim from Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan. It’s nice to see that Bayh isn’t even pretending that what he’s advancing is some alternative vision of progressive change—it’s something he expects, rightly, die-hard rightwingers to find pleasant.

    • Barack Obama even needs a teleprompter to get mad.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the president spoke a bit of Gaelic, dyed the White House fountains green and talked about his distant relatives in the tiny Irish town of Moneygall, aptly named since money and gall are the two topics now consuming him.

But Mr. Obama is still having trouble summoning a suitable flash of Irish temper at the gall of the corrupt money magicians who continue to make our greenbacks disappear into their bottomless well. He’s got to lop off some heads.

    • I checked in with Curt Anderson, a top aide to Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele, to get his thoughts on this story in The Hill, stating that the RNC is set to release "what are expected to be markedly low fundraising numbers on Friday." The response was pretty darn blunt:

Not a serious article, by not a serious reporter . . . We will have something on fundraising either today or tomorrow.

And this article wrongly states the fundraising numbers at the RNC for January. The January money raised was $5.6 million.

    • More babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any year in the nation's history, topping the peak during the baby boom 50 years earlier, federal researchers reported Wednesday.

There is both good and bad news from the more than 4.3 million births:

_The U.S. population is more than replacing itself, a healthy trend.

_However, the teen birth rate was up for the second year in a row.
The birth rate rose slightly for women of all ages, and births to unwed mothers reached an all-time high of about 40 percent, continuing a trend begun years ago. More than three-quarters of these women were 20 or older.
