CA-Gov: Meg Whitman Refuses to Debate Steve Poizner at March California GOP Convention

Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay

This is a bad move by Meg Whitman.

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, has actually been spotted in California this week to push her bid for the 2010 CA GOP gubernatorial nomination — but will she debate as the campaign against State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is heating up in a rather headline-grabbing fashion?

Poizner, speaking today on KPPC radio in Southern California, continued pounding Monday’s big story, accusing her campaign aide Mike Murphy (“an imbecile”) of political extortion in trying to get him out of the GOP governor’s race. And he said Whitman, “for some reason doesn’t want to campaign like a normal candidate,” refusing to talk to California media” and sidestepping debates.

On the debate angle, he’s got a point: looks like Whitman won’t take part in a long hoped-for debate at the upcoming 2010 state GOP spring convention in March.

Months ago, we told you that CA state GOP chair Ron Nehring was working hard to arrange candidates’ debates at the March 12-14 gathering at the Santa Clara Hyatt.

Party insiders lauded Nehring’s efforts to make it happen: debates for all statewide offices would not only excite the party’s grassroots and give the most loyal GOP voters an up-close-and-personal look at their candidates, but would be a guaranteed sell-out benefitting party coffers.

This will NOT sit well with Republican Party activists and average voters will wonder what Whitman has to hide. Whitman should change her mind and debate Steve Poizner.

CA-Gov Poll Watch: Meg Whitman Vs. Jerry Brown

2010 California Gubernatorial General Election: Meg Whitman (R) vs Jerry Brown (D)

    2010 Governor from Rasmussen:

    • 43% Brown (D), 39% Whitman (R)
    • 45% Brown (D), 35% Poizner (R)
    • 43% Feinstein (D), 42% Whitman (R)
    • 43% Feinstein (D), 39% Poizner (R)

In the latest Rasmussen poll ol’ crusty Democrat Jerry Brown barely leads former e-Bay CEO Meg Whitman. Brown does better against California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. But, the latest California Field Poll has Whitman far ahead of Poizner for the Republican nomination.

With the California economy in the dumper, I doubt that voters will be too happy electing a retread 70 year old whose lack of leadership was paramount during his first tenure as Governor decades ago. When Whitman cranks up the advertising, Brown’s numbers will fall like a rock.

By the way, Feinstein is comfy in the U.S. Senate and will stay there.

CA-Gov: Money Down: What Poizner’s Cash Play Means – Who Quits First?

The former MSM Left writers over at Calbuzz have an analysis of the $15 million cash infusion California Governor candidate Steve Poizner has recently announced.

“He didn’t have any other option,” said one Republican insider. “There were rumors all over Sacramento that he was going to drop out.”

Poizner’s $15 million move will likely stop the bleeding among the gossip-mongering cognoscenti (which he’s done for the moment, at least to judge by campaign flack Jarrod Agen’s success in getting the entire press corps to write exactly the same story Monday). It also may calm some of his current supporters, whose restiveness in the face of his failure to move the needle in the polls seems to have led to the we-got-her-right-where-we-want-her memo his campaign e-blasted last week, which smacked of desperation.

Having made his move, Poiznergreendollar now faces two other, far more difficult tasks: a) actually writing the check he’s promised (we’ll be watching) and b) figuring out how to spend the dough wisely. We’re also not convinced that $15 million is enough to make the kind of splash – positive, negative or both – he needs.

The fact remains the Poizner candidacy has NOT caught fire in California and he badly trails in the polls to both Meg Whitman and Tom Campbell (who has been rumored ready to drop out and run for the U.S. Senate against Carly Firoina and Chuck DeVore).

Frankly, I can think of a better way to waste $15 million. Poizner is not going to be elected Governor of California and we are not even talking about a run against Democrat Jerry Brown.

So, who quits first? Poizner or Campbell? Or both?

Day By Day November 13, 2009 – Strategery

Day By Day by Chris Muir

The ol’ barefoot and pregnant strategy for women ain’t going to fly in this modern world, Chris. Look at the latest female GOP politicians.

I mean you have Sarah Palin “Going Rogue.”

And, there are two top women business titans running for office in California:

    • Former e-Bay CEO Meg Whitman running for California Governor and
    • Former Hewlett-Packard Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina running for California United States Senate.

Actually, the barefoot and pregnant saying was really some male pigs pipe dream anyway.

Poll Watch: California Governor 2010 – Rough Year for the GOP?

Looks like a rough year for the California Republican Party to hold the Governorship now held by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger – no matter who wins the GOP nomination next June.

    All Registered Voters:

2010 Governor: General Election (all match-ups)

    • Brown 50%, Whitman 29%
    • Brown 48%, Campbell 27%
    • Brown 50%, Poizner 25%
    • Whitman 31%, Newsom 40%
    • Newsom 38%, Campbell 33%
    • Newsom 39%, Poizner 30%

Meg Whitman looked at one time as a very viable candidate but her lack of candor about her voting record has damaged her credibility. It will be difficult for her to crawl back into the race.

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has the ability to self-fund a big media campaign but has failed to catch-on voterwise. He may be the front-runner at the present time – despite the current polling because of his potential.

Former Congressman Tom Campbell is a moderte Republican but charismatically he is no Pete Wilson and will not motivate the GOP base of donors.

The REAL race may be between “Any Two-some” Newsom and Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown.

Update: Does Meg Whitman’s Lack of Voting Disqualify Her From California Governor’s Race?

Web Video from California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, a GOP candidate for California Governor: Sacramento Bee: “… Whitman regularly skipped elections in California and several other states where she lived and worked.

Meg Whitman, the former e-Bay CEO and candidate for California Governor has admitted that she should have been more diligent about voting but her campaign refutes with “the facts” some of the Sacramento Bee’s hit on her on September 24.

Whitman’s campaign writes to the Bee:

Dear Amy (Chance, an editor at the Sacramento Bee):

Thank you for our conversations in recent days regarding The Sacramento Bee’s September 24th story on Meg’s voting history.  As we discussed, the campaign has been in the process of reconciling its information and Meg’s recollections with The Bee’s coverage.  So far, we have found a number of disturbing discrepancies that raise serious questions about the quality of The Bee’s reporting and the integrity of your newspaper.

For starters, The Bee reported that while Meg lived in San Francisco from 1981 to 1989, she was not registered to vote and did not vote.  The problem we have with this is that Meg clearly remembers voting on multiple occasions, including the 1984 and 1988 presidential elections.

As Meg prepared to enter the race, our campaign requested her voting records from the San Francisco registrar and was told that no records were available from 1981 to 1989.  We have a letter from the registrar confirming that fact.

After your story ran, we went back to the San Francisco registrar and asked them to confirm your assertion that Meg had not registered or voted in San Francisco between 1981 and 1989.  They could not.  The registrar’s office again confirmed in writing that it no longer has records for voters prior to 1992.  Records from that period were never transferred and they simply don’t have them.

In an attempt to confirm our findings, we then asked the registrar to provide voting information for several prominent San Franciscans, including Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi.  (Dianne Feinstein was Mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988. Nancy Pelosi has lived in San Francisco since 1969 and was elected to Congress in 1987.)  The registrar’s office came back in writing with the same result.  There are no records in any system of Dianne Feinstein or Nancy Pelosi voting in San Francisco prior to 1992.

Clearly, Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein voted in San Francisco during the 1980s, and so did Meg Whitman.  Based solely on a mysterious unnamed source at the registrar’s office, The Bee conveniently asserts that Meg never voted in San Francisco.  This flies in the face of any information actually available at the San Francisco registrar’s office.

And the list of errors in your September 24th story goes on and on:

The Sacramento Bee wrote that Meg was not registered to vote in Ohio.  Yet, we have a letter from the Hamilton County Board of Elections confirming that she was registered to vote there from 1980 to 1982.

The Sacramento Bee wrote that the first voter registration it found for Meg was in San Mateo County in 2002.  Yet, through voting archives, we have confirmed Meg’s registration in Santa Clara county beginning in February 8, 1999.  The affidavit number for Meg’s registration is 70CE223397.

The Sacramento Bee stated that Steve Poizner had regularly voted in elections.  Yet, the next day, after our campaign pointed out your mistake, The Bee acknowledged that Poizner failed to vote in statewide primary elections in 1994 and 1998.

The Sacramento Bee stated that there is no record of Meg voting as a young woman in Suffolk County, New York.  Yet, when we contacted the registrar in Suffolk County multiple times, we were told that there was no conclusive evidence either way.  They did not confirm or deny the registration or voting history.

Finally, using public records, we have so far been unable to confirm your assertion that Steve Poizner voted regularly during his years in Texas, which is not surprising given the condition of records going back to that period.  However, you appear to have given Poizner the benefit of the doubt.

When Meg launched her campaign in February, she openly acknowledged that her voting record was far from perfect.  She was open about the facts as she remembered them.  And her campaign collected all the documentation available to support her claims.

The number of errors in your story, plus the convenient use of a mysterious unnamed source to contradict the information publicly available at the San Francisco registrar’s office, leaves the impression that your newspaper or its sources set out to deliberately misrepresent Meg’s voting history.  While Meg makes no excuses for the votes she missed, the record she does have should be accurately reported.

We expect The Sacramento Bee to correct the record as soon as possible.  In particular, your newspaper should retract its assertion that Meg never voted in San Francisco or provide a credible on-the-record source to support the claim.

        Regards,

        Tucker Bounds
        Director of Communications
        Meg Whitman for Governor

Listen to Hugh Hewitt’s interview of Amy Chance, the political editor of the Sacramento Bee here.

The facts remain that Meg whitman has not been a diligent voter and should have voted more. Whitman acknowledges this.

Now, with these facts that her acts of voting omission are NOT as egregious as reported by the Sacramento Bee change anything?

I believe it does. Failure to vote from time to time is understandable and rarely has been an absolute disqualifer from office.

So, this question will be answered by the voters of California: Did Whitman’s slender voting record show an INDIFFERENCE to the political process?

If so, then she will not be nominated by the GOP or elected Governor.

“Darned Good” Republican Meg Whitman’s Campaign for California Governor Self-Destructs With Revelation She Endorsed Democrat U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer in 2003

Meg Whitman has already been struggling with her GOP bonafides with her recent re-registration from a DTS (Decline to State) voter to the Republican Party and this revelation will not help her – AT ALL.

Former eBay executive Meg Whitman, the 2010 gubernatorial candidate who has recently portrayed herself as a “darned good” conservative Republican, endorsed Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer in 2003, records show.

“Whitman contributed $4,000 to Boxer in the 2004 reelection campaign — and endorsed Boxer as a part of Technology Leaders for Boxer,” confirmed Boxer aide Rose Kapolczynski today.

And, she signed an “open letter” appealing for support from the California technology executives, touting Boxer as a “dynamic and courageous leader” on the tech front.

Whitman’s name was included in a “Friends of Boxer” release when the committee of a dozen technology leaders was formed in 2003 to assist the California Democrat in her 2004 re-election effort, which pitted her against GOP former Secretary of State Bill Jones.

The move by Whitman to back the Democratic junior Senator came about because “in the spring of 2003, some technology leaders were interested in announcing their support for Boxer, so our campaign went out and talked to a wide range of leaders. And Meg Whitman was among them,” Kapolcyznski said.

“She agreed to endorse the Senator…there was a fundraising event in Silicon Valley later in the year and Whitman maxed out to the campaign,” she said.

Looks like the race for California governor in 2010 will be California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner’s to lose.

And, how will this affect former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina’s bid to unseat Barbara Boxer?

If Carly Fiorina decides to run, that is.

Does Meg Whitman’s Lack of Voting Disqualify Her From California Governor’s Race?

Web Video from California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, a GOP candidate for California Governor: Sacramento Bee: “… Whitman regularly skipped elections in California and several other states where she lived and worked.

It doesn’t look good for her candidacy.

These Republican gubernatorial primaries are getting bloody awfully early, and the other millionaire in the California race, Steve Poizner, sees his opening: The Sac Bee’s report that there’s no record Whitman has ever voted.

He hammers her in this new spot, and his supporters are gleefully circulating a transcript today of her weak, programmed response to questions:…….

The Washington Post over the weekend pretty much sums up the flap.

Certainly not every citizen has a perfect record of voting in national, state and local elections. Nor do some people who have sought election to office. Schwarzenegger did not vote in the 1996 and 2000 presidential primary or general elections. Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and a prospective Republican candidate for Senate in California next year, skipped the presidential primaries in 2000 and 2004 and the primary and general elections in 2006.

Failure to vote from time to time is understandable and has rarely been seen as disqualifying for those seeking public office. But Whitman’s record appears to go beyond occasional absences. Setting aside the question of whether she was registered before 2002, her slender record is striking for its apparent indifference to the political process.

Flap is NOT ready yet to say “put a fork in Whitman – she’s done.”But, she has a long road to the GOP nomination and a win against Jerry Brown or Gavin Newsom.

Some will surmise her voting record is an insurmountable obstacle to election.

Bill Clinton to Endorse San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for California Governor – Republicans Cheer

San Francisco Mayor Gavin “Whether You Like it or Not” Newsom

Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner must be dancing this morning.

Former President Bill Clinton is backing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for California governor over state Attorney Gen. Jerry Brown, potentially upending next year’s Democratic race to succeed Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Clinton’s decision to appear on Oct. 5 alongside one of his wife’s top backers in her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination comes at a critical time for the San Franciso mayor: Although Newsom has built a substantial Facebook and Twitter following among younger voters, Brown, a former two-term governor, has raised more than twice as much money as he has.

Clinton’s trip to California next month is expected to include an event in predominantly Latino East Los Angeles as well as a high-dollar fundraiser.

While the endorsement of a former president is big news in any state, the former chairman of the California Democratic Party thinks it could be especially significant in California, a state where Clinton has had a strong following ever since he beat Brown in the state’s 1992 presidential primary.

These are delusions of grandeur on the part of Newsom and the California Far Left. Jerry Brown has the support of mainstream labor and will pillage Newsom with television ads next Spring before the June 2010 Democrat Primary election.

California voters are disgruntled in any event(tired of decades of Democrat control of the Legislature) and the REAL race for California Governor is between the two Republicans, Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner. Californians will not vote for an old man retread pol or a young morally challenged San Francisco Mayor.

Flap looks forward to the divisive Democrat primary though.
