Video: The 90 Per Cent Myth of United States Guns in Mexico

Fox News Special Report on Mexican Guns:While 90 percent of the guns traced to the U.S. actually originated in the United States, the percent traced to the U.S. is only about 17 percent of the total number of guns reaching Mexico.

Talk about a government statistic that has been used to further an agenda.

You’ve heard this shocking “fact” before — on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States.

    • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it to reporters on a flight to Mexico City.
    • CBS newsman Bob Schieffer referred to it while interviewing President Obama.
    • California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said at a Senate hearing: “It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors … come from the United States.”
    • William Hoover, assistant director for field operations at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified in the House of Representatives that “there is more than enough evidence to indicate that over 90 percent of the firearms that have either been recovered in, or interdicted in transport to Mexico, originated from various sources within the United States.”

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

    It’s just not true.

But, now, the ATF has clarified their statistic used by their own agency’s assisant director: “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

    The problem is:

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

So, where do the guns come from?

Not necessarly from the United States.

Most of these weapons are being smuggled from Central American countries or by sea, eluding U.S. and Mexican monitors who are focused on the smuggling of semiauto- matic and conventional weapons purchased from dealers in the U.S. border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

The proliferation of heavier armaments points to a menacing new stage in the Mexican government’s 2-year-old war against drug organizations, which are evolving into a more militarized force prepared to take on Mexican army troops, deployed by the thousands, as well as to attack each other.

These groups appear to be taking advantage of a robust global black market and porous borders, especially between Mexico and Guatemala. Some of the weapons are left over from the wars that the United States helped fight in Central America, U.S. officials said.

So, why are American politicians using this misleading 90 per cent statistic?

The conspiratorial folks will say the Obama Administration is laying the groundwork to grab their guns.

I say that the Obama administration must be watched closely when they use statistics to justify public policy changes.

North Korea Begins Fueling Taepodong-2 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

    north korea taepodong-2 march 29 2009

This DigitalGlobe’s QuickBird satellite image taken on March 29, 2009 shows the North Korea rocket launch facility in Musudan Ri, North Korea

Apparently, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s warnings to Kim Jong-Il have landed on deaf ears as North Korea proceeds to fuel their Taepodong-2 ICBM space launch vehicle.

North Korea has begun fueling its long-range rocket, according to a senior U.S. military official.

The fueling signals that the country could be in the final stages of what North Korea has said will be the launch of a satellite into space as early as this weekend, the senior U.S. military official said Wednesday.

Other U.S. military officials said the top portion of the rocket was put on very recently, but satellite imagery shows a shroud over the stage preventing a direct view of what it looks like.

The officials said the payload appears to have a “bulbous” cover, which could indicate that there is a satellite loaded on it. Such a cover protects a satellite from damage in flight.

Although the sources did not know for sure what the payload is, they said there is no reason to doubt that it is a satellite, as indicated by North Korea.

Pyongyang has said it will launch the rocket between April 4 and April 8. A launch would violate a 2006 United Nations Security Council resolution banning the reclusive state from launching ballistic missiles.

Pentagon officials worry less about the payload and more about the launch itself, saying that any kind of launch will give the North Koreans valuable information about improving their ballistic missile program.

And, the United States has been silent after the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, said that there is nothing America can or will do about the launch.

Hillary Clinton continues to maintain should North Korea launch that there will be “consequences.”

    Whatever that means.

Shocking: United States Has NO PLANS to Intercept North Korea Missile – Hillary Clinton

Not really a shocker from a Secretary of State whose husband’s Secretary of State used to toast Kim Jong-il and give him autographed basketballs. Yet, the United States has deployed assets off the coast of North Korea.

The United States has no plans to shoot down the North Korean rocket, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday in an interview with CNN’s Jill Dougherty, but will raise the issue with the U.N. Security Council if Pyongyang carries out a launch.

“We are doing our best to dissuade the North Koreans from going forward, because it is provocative action,” Clinton said. “It raises questions about their compliance with the Security Council Resolution 1718. And if they persist and go forward, we will take it up in appropriate channels.”

Flap’s bet: Japan WILL shoot down the missile while Obama and Hillary try to talk it out of the sky with the United Nations.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Warns North Korea Over Taepodong-2 Missile Launch

    north korea launch

Musudan Ri, North Korea, formally know as Taepo-dong missile launch facility, the area where North Korea rocket launch facility is located is seen in this satellite image by DigitalGlobe taken on March 23, 2009

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Mexico City today warned North Korea that a Taepodong missile launch would have consequences.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday a potential missile launch by North Korea would be a provocative act that would have consequences for talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

Clinton’s comments came as a U.S. official said North Korea had positioned what is believed to be a long-range ballistic missile on a launch pad in what could be a preparation for a launch.

“We have made it very clear that the North Koreans pursue this pathway at a cost and with consequences to the six-party talks which we would like to see revived and moving forward as quickly as possible,” she told reporters on a visit to Mexico City.

“This provocative action … will not go unnoticed and there will be consequences,” she said.

Flap previously noted that North Korea was readying the Taepodong-2 missile for launch and that the missile threatened Alaska, Hawaii and parts of the Western continenetal United States.

Japan has threatened to shoot down the North Korean missile but the United States does have Aegis missile defense assets in the region.

As for US intercept plans, the Navy left two Aegis missile defense ships behind from the armada sent to the Sea of Japan for war games. Could the US shooter be the USS John S. McCain?

Now that Hillary has issue the warning of consequences will the United States deploy its missile defense assets and shoot down the missile or will they merely suspend the 6-party talks should they launch?

The scheduled test is due in the April 4 – 8 time frame.

Will this be President Obama’s fitst major test as President?

Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand Appointed to Replace Hillary Clinton in US Senate – Opposition Forms

    Kirsten gillibrand appointed

Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., left, and New York Gov. David Paterson appear at a news conference in Albany, N.Y., Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Gillibrand, a second-term lawmaker from upstate New York, was named by Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration

New York Governor David Paterson appointed two term Democrat Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to repalce Hillary Clinton.

Gov. Paterson, defying the liberal wing of his Democratic Party, has chosen little-known, NRA-backed, upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as New York’s junior senator, it was learned last night.

The surprising – and, for many Democrats shocking – decision to pick the conservative Gillibrand, 42, from Hudson in Columbia County, was disclosed by the governor in calls to party officials and some members of the state’s congressional delegation, many of whom said they were unhappy with the selection, sources said.

The GOP must be happy with this Blue Dog Democrat being appointed. Opposition from the LEFT is already forming.

Anti-gun groups have denounced the pick and suggested they will be closely eyeing Gillibrand’s transition from a congresswoman in a gun-toting upstate district to a senator representing one of the most anti-gun cities in America, where she will need support to win the Democratic nomination in 2010.

Signs of severe unrest with the pick are already apparent, particularly in a blogging community that was happy to have her hold down a conservative House district, but thinks it can do better for a senator in a blue state.

Rep. Gillibrand is little known and will be no match for former New York Governor George Pataki, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani or current New York Mayor Bloomberg. She undoubtedly will have to move to the LEFT or face a NUTROOTS backed primary challenge.

Plus, her conservative leaning Congressional district in upstate New York which she is vacating will be ripe for a GOP pick-up.

All things considered, a perfect appointment for the Republican Party.

Caroline Kennedy Withdraws Her Name from Consideration to Replace Hillary Clinton in the United States Senate

    Caroline Kennedy
Caroline Kennedy responds during an interview, Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 in New York

    Caroline Kennedy is out.

Caroline Kennedy has told Gov. David Paterson that she is withdrawing her name from consideration to replace outgoing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate, The Post has learned.

Kennedy cited “personal reasons,” according to sources.

Her stunning move comes as sources revealed that Paterson had intended to appoint her to the now-vacant seat today.

The 51-year-old Camelot daughter’s decision removes the highest-profile name in the ring to step into Clinton’s seat, as she departs after getting confirmed as President Obama’s Secretary of State today.

The surprise decision leaves a crowded field of about 15 people, mostly elected officials, vying to replace Clinton – including Long Island Rep. Steve Israel, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, upstate Rep. Kirstin Gillibrand and Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

For the first time on Tuesday, shortly after Obama was inaugurated, Paterson acknowledged publicly that he is considering state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for the slot.

Now, the field is cleared for New York Governor David Paterson to appoint Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to the seat which in turn clears the field for Paterson to win the Democrat Party nomination to run for Governor in 2010.

Paterson was NOT going to appoint Kennedy and allowed her a face saving withdrawal. Thus, ends the very short political career of Caroline Kennedy.

The United States Senate seat from New York became vacant this afternoon when Hillary Clinton resigned after her confirmation as Secretary of State.

Maverick John McCain Bails Out His Old Drinking Buddy Hillary Clinton

    mccainjan30aweb

    The Maverick is back.

John McCain has just come to the rescue of his old drinking buddy Hillary Clinton, bucking his colleague John Cornyn by calling for an immediate voice vote on her confirmation as Secretary of State.

In his first maverick-y move of the 111th Congress, McCain took to the Senate floor to call for unanimous consent to skip the 4:30 p.m. roll call on her nomination.

And he pressed John Kerry, who was deeply amenable, to deal with the matter right after lunch.

“I just talked to with Sen. Cornyn and he doesn’t object,” said McCain, who once bonded on an overseas trip with Clinton by doing shots.

“Sen. Cornyn is happy to yield back time and go to a voice vote once everybody has had their chance to speak,” said spokesman Kevin McLaughlin.

So far, every Republican except Cornyn has risen to say they want her confirmed as quickly as possible.

Ahhhhh the McCain conservatives love to hate is back – turning the Senate GOP Caucus into GO-ALONG Eunuchs.

But McCain, last year’s Republican nominee for president, argued that the Senate should skip the time-consuming roll-call vote and confirm Clinton by unanimous consent. “I think the message that the American people are sending us now is they want us to work together and get to work,” McCain said.

McCain has kept a low-profile since his November loss to Obama, but has enjoyed an unusually close relationship with Obama since the election. On Monday night, Obama held a dinner in McCain’s honor, and Obama has recently consulted McCain on foreign-policy issues, including the war in Iraq.

While McCain said he had spoken with Cornyn to receive his approval for skipping the roll-call vote, McCain and Cornyn have had well-documented battles in the past, including a heated exchange in 2007 over immigration legislation .

Here is the video of Senator John Cornyn capitulating on his hold of Hillary Clinton’s confirmation as Secretary of State.

Looks like Hillary will be confirmed and sworn in by the end of the afternoon.

Senator John Cornyn Blocks Easy Confirmation of Hillary Clinton As Secretary of State

Bill and Hillary Clinton at Obama Inauguration

Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton arrive at the inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009

Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) has blocked Hillary Clinton’s confirmation as Secretary of State and word is she is NOT too happy about it.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s smooth ride to confirmation as secretary of state hit a small bump on Tuesday as one of her Republican colleagues blocked a vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination, citing ethical questions arising from donors to her husband’s charitable foundation.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas objected to including Mrs. Clinton’s name in a unanimous consent vote for several Cabinet nominees, scheduled for hours after the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama. The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, plans to hold a roll-call vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination on Wednesday, which she is expected to win easily.

Well, this gives a few Republicans an opportunity to vote against her and gives New York Governor David Paterson an additional day to name a replacement Senator.

Not a good day for Hillary.

OOPS: Jill Biden Spills the Beans – Hillary Clinton Second Choice for Secretary of State

Jill Biden and Joe Biden talk to Oprah and Jill reveals too much

So, Hillary Clinton is “The Second” Secretary of State choice of Barack Obama, that is, as Jill Biden sets the Clintons straight.

Appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s show this afternoon, Jill Biden, wife of Vice-President elect Joe Biden, made a verbal gaffe that could land the Obama Administration in some hot water. Mrs. Biden let slip that her husband Joe was offered a choice of either the Secretary of State’s position or the Vice-Presidency.

The potential problem for the Obama Administration goes far beyond the obviously embarrassing revelation that Hillary Clinton was actually the second choice for Secretary of State, however. Promising an appointment to a federal office by a candidate in exchange for support is a crime.

Title 18 chapter 29 section 599 of the United States code is very specific about such promises, and the punishment that goes along with making them.

    Wow!

Joe Biden had problems with his own gaffes but now he has pissed off the Clinton Cabal and creates a major embarassment for the Obama Administration on the eve of their taking power.

It is only starting for MORE gaffes from slow Joe Biden. Ya gotta love it…….
